Woot! 3 more episodes and this series will reach its finale. All of these times, I always wonder how many people have actually read/seen the ending. I've heard that many people left the series after L's death so I assume that they didn't stick around to see the ending of the series. As someone who has read the ending (but not this part of the story), I have to say that I find the ending to be satisfying. Having said that, I now understand what people say when they claim that between L's death to the ending, it feels like the storyline is dragging. I think the storyline certainly lacks the excitement of the early plot. However, I'm not sure if it's because L's death or because the plotline is being reused over and over again. At any rate, I think it's really about time to end the series.
Continuing from last week's episode, Near decides that they need to get close to Mikami. There's just one problem with this: the presence of the Shinigami. However, even if it's difficult to do, Light asks Giovanni to follow Mikami. Meanwhile, Aizawa and Light are doing checks on Takada's room for surveillance bugs. While doing so, Aizawa remembers how the first time Light and Takada have secret meetings, Kira called her and as a result, they had to dismantle the cameras. At that time, Aizawa told himself that now the two can carry on conversation by means of writing. He also wonders why Kira allows Light to continue meeting with Takada. Because of this, while Light continues his search for the surveillance bugs, Aizawa drives his fingernail into the bottom part of a hotel notepad so that it'll leave a mark in the note. That night when Takada meets Light again inside the same room, she tells the guy that she had a meeting with Misa yesterday.
Kiyomi goes straight to the point and tells Light that Misa told her that she would announce her engagement to Light in New Year. She, however, secretly writes on a piece of paper, asking Light about what Misa really means to him. Meanwhile in the control room, Matsuda is excited because Light is in big problem. As a result, Light lies and tells Kiyomi that he hasn't had a chance to talk about it to Misa. Secretly, however, he's angry at Misa and Kiyomi for saying unnecessary things. Despite this, Light writes on a piece of paper about how Misa had the power of Kira and knew that he was Kira so he had no choice. Otherwise, he'd not choose a girl like her. Kiyomi is startled to find out about this but convinces herself that unlike Misa, she's selected by Light. Light then tries to convince her by saying that right now there's only her. Kiyomi who doesn't buy the lame pickup line tells Light that doesn't sound like him.
Kiyomi tells Light that she'll believes Light for now but if he lies, she'd tell Kira. In response Light tells Kiyomi that he knows Kira is necessary but sometimes he wonders if he and Kiyomi will ever get together. He tells her that Kira is detestable because while killing bad people is okay, they're not bad people and deserve happiness. Secretly, however, he hands Kiyomi a note telling her that they could have had happy and peaceful life if Kira doesn't exist. Much to the Japanese police's surprise, Kiyomi tells Light that it would have been better if Kira is caught. Light feigns surprise and asks Kiyomi if that's true and reminds her of the danger. This would mean that she will have to go against Kira. Much to the Japanese police's surprise and delight, Kiyomi is agree to do it. Meanwhile, Giovanni reports to Near and Lester that he saw Mikami mittered to himself. Lester tries to read the mouth movement and gets "Is that you, Shinigami?".
Closer inspection, however, reveals that Mikami was reacting to the scrumpled paper near his feet. When Lester tries to read more of Mikami's mouth movement, he finds out that Mikami was saying that the Shinigami hasn't appeared since it gave him the notebook. Upon hearing this, Near realises that although the Shinigami gave Mikami the notebook, it didn't follow the guy. Meanwhile, Light has just finished his conversation with Takada so Aizawa decides to use the opportunity to sneak into the room to see the state of the notepad. However, when he arrives there, he can't seem to find the notepad which he marked earlier. Because of this, Aizawa decides to share his finding with Near. Unfortunately Near is not crazy about Aizawa's involvement in the case because he fears that Aizawa might ruin his own carefully plotted plan. Fast forward a few days/weeks later, Kiyomi is seen on NHN delivering the 60th Kouhaku Singing Contest.
At the same time, Misa is on her way to the show itself when she finds herself and Mogi being confronted by the SPKs, particularly Hal and Lester. As a result, Kiyomi has no choice but to inform the viewers that unfortunately Misa has not arrived yet. Speaking of Misa, she's protesting her kidnapping but Lester informs her that this is necessary to catch Kira. He also apologises for pointing a gun at Mogi but the fact that he didn't resist helps a lot. Mogi admits to himself that normally he would have but after hearing what Aizawa said about the notepad, he thinks it would be better to hear what Near might have to say. At the same time, Light tells Near that Misa and Mogi have disappeared so Near admits outright that he has abducted both of them as insurance. He also allows Light to speak to the two so Near shows them a surveillance video of Misa and Mogi sitting at a couch. Upon speaking with them, Light agrees to let Near to talk with them.
As the viewers of the Kouhaku protest about Misa's non-presence, Giovanni decides to visit the gym where Mikami is exercising. After confirming that the guy is busy in the weights room, Mikami goes to the locker room and open the locker where Mikami hides his bag. Giovanni finds the Death Note inside the bag and decides to touch it. Upon doing so, however, he can't see any Shinigami. When Giovanni reports this to Near, Near decides to ask Mogi if he remembers how many days can someone control their victim before said victim is dead. Mogi tells him that during the Yotsuba case, it's been heard that it'll take 23 days. After ending the call, Near has no choice but to consider the possibility that Giovanni might have been spotted by the Shinigami and is now controlled by Mikami. But they need to wait for 24 days to confirm this. Near also asks Giovanni to take pictures of the note and upon seeing it, Near believes that they can 'do' this.
Impression:
This feels way too slow when there is only 3 episodes left to solve all of the stories. Apart from Giovanni's story, I think everything else, especially Light's conversation with Kiyomi, can be efficiently cut out. Speaking of Giovanni, I don't think he's actually being controlled by anyone. I guess it makes sense for Near to come up with that possibility. However, we the viewers, saw with our own eyes that Giovanni didn't see any Shinigami. Because of this, I don't think it's possible for him to be forced to tell Near that he didn't see any Shinigami. In addition to this, didn't Near try to guesstimate what Mikami was saying? That implies the Shinigami (Ryuk) does not hang around Mikami that often. I think Ryuk's indifference to the owner of the Death Note is something that the humans, including Light himself, fail to take into account. They assume that he'd be loyal to them but the fact is, Ryuk just wants amusement and can't care less about the owner of the notebook. Because of this, it doesn't make sense for him to report Giovanni to Light unless he thinks he can get amusement out of it.

On next week's episode: The *bleep* is about to hit the fan.
yey i've been waiting for this i love the captions... :)
i have also been wondering about that... i don't understand why Near can't pick that up. if they managed to read Mikami's lips and figure out the shinigami isn't following him, then wouldn't the obvious conclusion be that Giovanni won't see anything? even if he's supposed to be loyal...and besides Mikami was at the gym, Giovanni in the locker room...if Ryuuk was following Mikami then he'd be at the gym with him, not in the locker room.
again i'm annoyed by Takada in this episode. she really puts herself in a pedestal doesn't she, thinking Light puts her first before Misa. in this show, women are unreasonable creatures.
i don't think i wanna watch the next episode...i haven't read this part yet so i'm not sure if 'he' will die already, but i think the other 'he' will. *stares pointedly* he didn't even get enough screen time or lines... :(
I only wish that they included a little bit more dialogue from the manga. Near's deductions seem a little more thought out there. Love how he's all arrogant and shrugs off Aizawa, though.
I want some of those Near customized toys. :O
Looks like not only Mello, but Matt as well, will get some play in the next episode.
Is that Hideki Ryuuga in blue kimono? ^^
Anyway, I saw the ending and found them really really good XD
Is that Hideki Ryuuga in blue kimono? ^^
Yes it is. As you can see, he shares some similarities with L. :D
I really liked the second arc in the manga, but that's because I was in it completely for Near, Mello, and Matt. The parts with Light, Takada, and Mikami bored the shit out of me (Misa is the exception, she's always okay .. because she's crazy). And that's why I haven't been downloading the last few episodes, just reading about them. Because they are cutting all the parts I like and emphasizing the parts I hate. :/ I don't see what Madhouse doesn't get it. The Wammy kids embody many of the things about L which made him so attractive, except they put their own spin on it, and then there's the whole idea where certain parts of L's personality are "corrupted" by their own quirks, and are at war with each other. Since L was the most popular character in the series, why not play up that part of the second arc and emphasize it? Oh, I know why. Because they're stupid. o_O They listened to too many boring people whining about how much they hate Mello and Near because they're weak copies of L ... yeah, they so don't even get the point. Madhouse really dropped the ball. They could have done so many things with the second arc to make it even better, and instead they made it worse.
annalisa: hear hear!! :) it annoys me when they hate Mello and Near, they obviously don't understand their significance. there are even some ignorant people out there who diss them and cheer for Light...ignorant because we all know that the bad guy ALWAYS never wins, so it doesn't even matter if they've read the manga or not.....anywaaaay...
i came back here to share this interesting trivia... just found out that Madonna loves Death Note and reads the manga, and apparently her favorite character is Mello. her look in her music video 'Jump' is apparently homage to him....what do you guys think, does she look like Mello in that vid? ;)
Wow mello, that's really interesting bit of trivia! Hmm Madonna = Mello? I need to go back and see that vid again.
Anyway i think ppl dont always have to support the good guys. Otherwise there wouldnt be any anti-heroes in fictions. Near is supposedly good cos he's trying to stop the evil Light. Yet i hate him not because of his similarities to L but because he's being arrogant and smug. I think the story is quite open and actually allows you to support either the good or the evil. And lastly im pretty sure i'm far from ignorant :)
I can't say I'm looking forward to seeing the ending.
I remember it all too well in the manga and to this day I still think it sucks hard.
I agree with Leon. The end of the series sucks. And it doesn't matter if one love a character for his attitudes or because it represents something in the story, it doesn't make any difference, as it is just what one likes or not.
The thing is, the one who sets the rules through the game, and the winner of it is the good, so it is in history, if not, one may be accused for betraying and be against society, the loser..., maybe is just an alternative truth. And in this case, I understand the double combination of L's descendants surpassed their master, but as a separate entity, they're bad copies of a total new, heroic, intelligent and interesting-bizarre icon, who was L, so, whether they win or not, they're just a mean to get to that that L couldn't achive. Victory.
So, to keep up with what a usual TV show is, or better said, to continue making DN be the story of an anti-hero, the "good" guys MUST win, and the Light we saw on the first arc, is but a weakened-by-the-writers Mastermind whose fall is necessary in order to do so.
And as the anime has surprinsingly well followed the manga almost word by word, making some exceptions in this rushed eps, the end will still suck.
Personally, I love the end of the manga. I love seeing the Douchebag suffer and go crazy. Plus, the parody potential is fabulous. "YOU CALL THAT SWIMMING?!"
Light was always that retarded. He's like those inbred purebred dogs that people pay $1000 for and whose brains short-circuit every two seconds. If he wasn't that stupid, he would have realized how incredibly impossible and ridiculous his whole scheme was.
What I like about Mello and Near is how human they are. Yeah, yeah, Light vs. L, genius vs. genius, perfection vs. perfection. After awhile, it just gets boring. Mello and Near have wonderful flaws and weaknesses. And besides that, to be honest -- if you don't chose to understand Mello and Near, then you understand very little about L himself. Because those two characters give you so much implicit knowledge about L. Just read Mello's prologue to "Another Note". You learn more about L in a few lines written by him than you do from the entire first arc.
If Ryuk was indeed haunting Mikami, he would definitely tell him that Giovanni was tailing him. He did tell Light that Ray Penber was following him after all.
Christine, that was a different set of circumstance. Light was telling Ryuk that he can't no longer eat apple unless he helps him to get rid of the police off his back. But that was then before he started to lose all of his memories, etc.
Not too fond of the series - but love this entry's screenshot remarks (M&M's!!) and the comments (LOL @ Annalisa).
yeeeeeeeeeeeeees next episode we're seeing
@marionettespieler: He showed up back in ep. 32 . . . briefly. XD BUT! It makes me sad, 'cause in the next episode
I'll be really sad to see the series end. It kinda annoyed me to see how much of the second arc was cut and changed around, but on the whole I think they did a better job with Death Note than with many other series.
YAY next episode has Matt! I was disappointed to see how little he appeared.
By the way, does anyone know where you can download Death Note in a format that's not bittorent (preferably mp4)? My computer went whack and not bittorent won't work and I can't seem to fix it
Yes - the plot is beginning to become repetitive and inactive - I can care less about Lawliet's death.
> I'm not sure if it's because L's death or because the plotline is being reused over and over again
I think it's both. If they'd run out of ideas at the point that L died they should have wrapped it up then and left the whole thing solid. By belaboring it they just weakened the whole thing until I can't even recommend it anymore. I expect the publisher insisted on expanding it to keep the money rolling. But in the end I think they lose because the story won't be the clear-cut hit that it started out as, and will thus be shorter lived than it might have been in the hearts of fans.
Fuuih next epsiode will be interesting and i think that will be happen with Kiyomi
@Ophelia: Actually, I think Ryuk told Light about Penber because he was actually creeped out. He said something along the lines of feeling like he was being watched because he's always behind Light.
moi: He did!!!!!???? I didn't watch that episode T-T
is that a cap of matt i see :O!!!

Oh dear ...yikes!! You tossed in an unmarked major spoiler in the first few sentences of your post. I thought you usually saved those sort of things for the "after the jump".
*Sigh* well at least a part of me expected it and I really hope there are bigger surprises to follow.
lol matsuda is a crackup in this episode :p
Wow, Matt looks better in anime!
I wish the series would have lasted longer. But ya its true that it has been dragged on. I'm just so sad it had to end this way!!! Yea Near and Mello are kool...but I can never forget good old L and prefer him over them a million times!! And Light is awesome...but I guess he'll get wut he deserves ay?
I like Near's own little Cristmas tree XD
