Death Note ep.33

The music in this episode is sublime. The French-flavoured accordion song that plays as Kiyomi leaves a restaurant reminds me of many spy thriller movies. It really highlights the double-backstabbing nature of the story and the complex tangle web between the characters. Story-wise, this is not exactly the most exciting part of the series. However, I think it's a necessary episode to show the extent in which Light has manipulated not just one, but two women in his life. It's kind of sad to know that these women actually love him but we have no idea if he actually has that sort of feelings for them. My guess is he doesn't even understand what love is about because I've never seen him trying to protect anyone with the power that he has in his hand. After reading the final volume of the manga, I realise how fitting the ending turns out to be in relation to Light not loving anyone. The question is, can they finish the story in just four episodes?

While building a replica of the Tokyo Tower, Near asks Lester to accompany him going to Japan since he's never taken an airplane before. Meanwhile, the Japanese police has decided to use Misa so that they can get access to NHN. Once he arrives in Japan, Near contacts Light and tells him that he's come to Japan in order to capture Kira. Near also knows that Light has probably tried to get close to Takada Kiyomi and wants him to use her to tell Kira that the SPKs are now in Japan. Near believes that Kira will try to kill them and that's when they'll capture him. Light decides to accept the challange and agrees that they might meet one day since they are now in Japan. Thinking that L has now been replaced by others, Light believes that if they both come forward and confront each other, all they have to see is which one has prepared the best. Light believes that once the battle is concluded, he'll reign from his summit of victory.

Meanwhile, Near now realises that L is Light and that Light is Kira. He then proposes another character, a note user called X-Kira, a person who has the Shinigami eyes. Both Kira and X-Kira are in contact with Takada Kiyomi. In order to beat Kira, they must kill L-Kira and X-Kira but Near refuses to do this because this is not theirs, his and L's way of doing things. Meanwhile, Light is having conversation with Kiyomi about how she gets a lot of fan letters. This allows Light to tell her that she should take the time to read her fan letters. Unknown to the other policeman, Light has slipped in a message to Kiyomi, telling her that from now on, she should be careful of people who approach her since they could be one of the SPK members. Because of this, he wants her not to just let them do whatever they want so they don't think that she suspects them. He also explains that the sheet of paper that T (Mikami Teru) sends her can kill people.

Because of this, Light wants Kiyomi to kill the name of the criminals announced in NHN since Mikami has other things to do. Kiyomi panics upon hearing this and hits the table so Light covers it up by embracing her. Later on, Kiyomi contacts Mikami, asking him to send her a fan letter which she can tell easily that it comes from him. The content should be five blank sheets of paper. Mikami at first is hesitant to do this but eventually decides to yield to the wish of 'God'. A few days later, the Japanese police notices that Kiyomi gets her own show called "Today's Miss Takada". Someone then announces that today Kiyomi will select 4 bodyguards and amongst those 4, Hal Ridner is one of them. Upon seeing Hal's picture, Light realises that if there's an SPK member amongst the bodyguards, Hal will be that person. Meanwhile, thanks to Kiyomi's new program, Near finally manages to figure out that Mikami Teru is the X-Kira he's been searching.

Meanwhile, Misa is unhappy upon finding out that she's not the crowning glory at the NHN TV station. While walking within the studio, she spots Kiyomi with her 4 bodyguards. Out of jealousy, Misa decides to blab it out that she thinks Kiyomi is stupid for not realising that Light is only using her for the investigation. Despite this, Kiyomi simply gives her an icy cold smile before leaving the area. Misa, who's not happy about this, decides to confront Kiyomi but before she manages to do this, she's been stopped by Hal. Upon seeing this, Kiyomi pretends that Misa is one of her 'precious' friends so she asks Hal not to be rough with her. Meanwhile, Near decides to contact Light again, this time asking him if he can speak directly to Aizawa if the guy is around. Aizawa immediately takes over the mike so Near asks him if they video and audit-taped Kiyomi when she was talking to Light. As a result, Aizawa tells him they only have audio.

Later on that night, Misa ends up accepting Kiyomi's invitation to have dinner with her. Kiyomi apologises for inviting her to dinner this late but it'll have to be after her work at 9 o'clock news. She then asks Misa if she sees Light often, causing Misa to become angry. In response, she tells her that Light is touchy-feely when he's at home and that she'll announce her engagement to Light soon. When Kiyomi asks her if Light knows, Misa claims that he does since one can't get engaged alone. Kiyomi seems upset upon hearing this but she tells Misa that she hopes Misa can do it. Misa becomes angry and accuses Kiyomi that the other girl will try to get Kira to kill her. Kiyomi denies this and tells Misa that Kira will decide alone about who he should judge. Morever, she's not going to kill a person no matter how cruel that person turns out to be. Misa replies by saying that although she likes Kira, he'll soon be caught by Light and Kiyomi will be sentenced to death.

Upon hearing this, Kiyomi realises that Misa doesn't know that Light is actually Kira. She remembers the conversation she and Light had in her hotel room about how they'll rule the new world together. Kiyomi suddenly regains her confidence and pretends to Misa that she's offended by what she said. Because of this, she's not going to have dinner with her until she matures a little bit. In response Misa bites back by saying that she's older than Kiyomi. Later on, Hal Ridner reports the catfight between the two women to Near. Upon hearing this, Near realises that Light has his hold on both women. Meanwhile, Giovanni is in the middle of following Mikami when he sees a thug harassing a young girl inside a train. Mikami who sees similar thing decides to write the name of the thug into the death note. Giovanni decides to report this to Near and tries to follow Mikami. Before he can do this, however, the girl screams because the thug is now dead.

Impression:

I love the chilly talk session between Misa and Kiyomi. It's clear that they've worked themselves up to be Light's most favoured love interest. The sad thing about this is that Light doesn't seem to have any interest in them beyond using them for his own Kira-related plans. Having said that, it was amusing to see how both women got their own moment of satisfaction when they think that they have the upperhand on the other woman. I especially like Kiyomi's icy smile as she leaves the restaurant, it's a classic femme fatale smile. The French-flavoured accordion song that plays in the background simply accentuates the tragedy that both women find themselves in thanks to their involvement in Light's life. It's especially ironic when contrasted to Misa screaming to Mogi that she 'won'. Because in reality, she didn't win anything but a false belief that Light actually loves her. The scene also shows that Misa has the personality of a young girl as opposed to a mature young woman.

it's just hugely annoying how Misa and Kiyomi are so easily fooled by Light...i mean, are girls really this dumb, or is Light just really good?? (i'm a girl so i'm not sexist just a little insulted that these two are giving us girls a bad name!! thank god this is fiction)

anyways i was never a fan of Misa, but i'm an even lesser fan of Kiyomi, again insulted by the fact that such a smart girl is swayed by cheeseball lines like "i'll make you the goddess of the new world". wtf?! so i think i'll be on Misa's side, since she's has an excuse to be delusional (stupidity).

I have a very stupid question, but since the commenters on this blog seemed to be gifted with Death Note-fu, I thought that here might be a good place to ask it:

Whatever happened to the notebook that Rem dropped when she died? I remember that Light pocketed it before anyone could see. Did I remember that wrong? Unless I totally misunderstood something, wouldn't that have given Light a third notebook? I was pretty sure, at the time, that the notebook that Rem dropped was her *real* notebook, as opposed to the other two notebooks that were in the human world at the time.

This has been bugging me for the past couple episodes. After Shidoh took the one notebook, Light has been acting like there's only one notebook left, the one that he gave to Mikami. But I thought that with Rem's notebook, Light would still have a second notebook to worry about...

Nena,
OK, after Rem died, there were 3 notebooks. 1 that Misa had, 1 that the police group knew about and Light's father hid, and 1 that Light had.

Sayu gets kidnapped, Light's father trades the one he had hid, (ie the one in police custody) to get her back.
So now we have 1 that Misa has, 1 that Light has, and 1 that Mello's group has.

Light gives up his notebook, but borrows Misa's, keeping it attached to him so he won't forget things this time. He sends his notebook to his father/the police as Kira, telling them to use it to help get the notebook back from Mello. So now, Light has Misa's notebook, Light's father has one, adn Mell's group has one. They attack Mello's headquarters and are able to get Mello's notebook back. They give Mello's notebook to Shidoh. But the police still have 1 notebook that Kira had sent to them.

They hide this notebook (but not before Light makes certain to touch it and thus get ownership of it).

So now there are only 2 notebooks, the one the police know about/have hidden, and the one Misa had.

Light makes Misa give hers up and it gets passed to Mikami.

That's the current status of the notebooks.

Indeed, Death Note has a great story. However, I feel its quality decreased considerably after L dead. Now Light seems a dumb, making a lot of mistakes (I do still remember, disappointed, the end of episode 30). Now we have these new characters, of very poor performance (+ old, as Misa).

Nevertheless, the show is still the best, and I like its mood.

This episode was actually a bit boring. =/

And while I do like the scene with Misa and Takada . . . considering that they're trying to condense volumes of plot-plot-plot into 10 episodes, you'd think they wouldn't waste half an episode on showing us that Takada and Misa are idiots easily fooled by Light (something we already know). Just like you wouldn't think they'd also waste one of the second arc's few episodes on a recap. . . . (Haha, no, I'm not bitter at allll. XD)

Oh, well. . . . Next episode looks exciting; I always liked that part of the second arc. ^^

Also, is it just me, or did the animation in general suck in this episode? I think Madhouse is gonna lay down the moolah on the very last episodes, so I can't wait for that! Pretty animation FTW!

Thats so true, the show just seemed to drop right after L died. and Light doesn't seem as clever and errie like he did before. the mind game between L and Light was what made the show so exciting. but now It seems like Light is sloppy, and his tricks arn't as surprising and admirable anymore. Also for some reason i found myself confused durring most of the episode, I had to come here and read the summary to get an idea. It's still a good show, but I just wish that the creator could of somehow kept L and the exciting story line going.

Izumi -

Thanks for the explanation. During the past couple episodes I forgot that the police had a notebook. Which is silly of me, because they're talking to Ryuk and such... I told you it was a stupid question! But thanks anyway. ;)

June 2, 2007 | mark wrote:

yeah about the notes. Very quick cuz i am a little lost. Where did the police get the note book from. I know misa owned one cuz she got it from rem and ryuk gave his to Light. But the one that the police had where did it come from?like who did they confiscate it or in other words wher did hte third come from? sorry its been bothering me

June 2, 2007 | Moi wrote:

The note the police had came from Higuchi --- aka the third Kira --- when they caught him, right? At least, I think so. XD

June 3, 2007 | Dullindal wrote:

When Rem killed Watari and L, did she write their names on Higuchi's note, which was then with the Japanese police, or on her own?
What exactly did Light do with the notebook? He hides it in his pocket, but the police are still in possession of one note, which they later send Mello.Light gives up his own Note and sends it to the the police as Kira so they can own Mello and keep Misa's so he doesn't lose his memory.
He then gives on the note to Shidow, but the police still has one note, the one Light sent them as Kira, which he owns. Misa then gives up her note and Mikami gets his.

So, for Misa's note the scheme would be:(on episode 25)
Misa ---> Light --->Rem ---->Ryuk --->Light--->Misa

For Light's(episode 25):
Light ---> Ryuk ---> Rem ---> Higuchi ---> Light

What about the third book?Rem died. If she used Higuchi's note(which was Light's note), he hides it. That makes two notes, the one Light hid for Misa in the woods and Higuchi/Light's note.
She must have used her own note, then, so that Light can steal hers, Misa would have the one hidden in the woods and the police Higuchi/Light's.
The police sends higuchi/light's note to Mello, Light gives his to his father and Misa gives hers to Light. They give Mello's note to Shidoh, so the police has Light's note, which he touched and Mikami has Misa's who remembers nothing so as not to arouse suspicion.
Is this right?

see, even if it seems sad that Misa is happy & thought she "won", i guess it is not for outsiders to decide~ as long as the own self is satisfied. If you have seen the movie Misa in the end, that is the case.

The same with Yagami Father~~ you can say he died a stupid man, being manipulated by his son & not knowing - but you can also said he died contented, with the "assurance" that his son is not Kira & that he did the right thing for his family & as a police~~

Nande kore (possibly misspelled)!! Takada and Misa are obviously being used and it makes me feel ashamed to be a woman because of them since they are degrating themselves to simple pawns used by Light. Some of the only women in this show that play a somewhat important role is Misora Naomi (unfortuantely deceased) and Hal.

June 4, 2007 | mello wrote:

re: missing L

i don't think that the show went down after L's death, but i agree Light has gotten reckless and a little dumb.

i would've loved it if L lived, but i think his death is necessary if we want the story to progress. when he died they were about to test the 13-day rule and if they managed that then Light would've been convicted at episode 26, and the show ended at episode 27. it would've been an (sorta) easy win for L and a lame ending since there wasn't any real climactic showdown. and if that didn't happen and Light wasn't convicted, we would have to go through the same plan of giving up ownership, etc., and i've already had enough of that plotline.

And Wedy too.

Still no hair color changes for Mello or Near. And what happened to Ryuk in this ep if he's not with Light, the taskforce, or Mikami? Ah well, next episode should have some good Gevanni screentime...hope they don't cut out Aizawa and Near's little phone conversation.

Takada isn't intelligent, she's just studious, that's why she gets fooled so easily.

I believe Near talks about that with Lester in the Manga.

June 5, 2007 | Moi wrote:

Yeah, you're right. Near made the rather blunt observation that Takada was "really just a stupid woman" who was book-smart. XDD

Still, it's a bit annoying how almost all the women in this series are either:

A) Totally obsessing over one guy (the protagonist) whilst easily and blatantly being deceived (Misa and Takada)

B) Cool but dead within 2 seconds of appearing (Wedy, Naomi)

C) Are told to or end up just being forced into the background, only to comfort the male characters or act as a "damsel in distress" plot-device (Naomi, Mrs. Yagami, Sayu)

OR

D) . . . Are Hal Linder. XD

Actually, I could forgive Death Note of all of that if only Raye Penber hadn't told Naomi, "Silly, put your brain to rest and be a good obedient little housewife already!" And Naomi was all, "All righty, snookums!" *eyeroll* Oh, and also if Takada was a bit smarter and less easily deceived. (C'mon, not even the sharpest crayon in the box would istantly fall so quickly for the, "I'll make you the goddess of the new world!" line and actually believe that Kira of all freakin' people wouldn't have any ulterior motives. . . .)

I'm kinda lost/forgetful of who is currently holding the death notes.

now that Mikami is writing in his fake, DIY Death Note, where's the real one [I believe it was Misa's/] again? Does Kiyomi have it or did LIght get it back, or did Mikami hide it somewhere?

I am also wondering if there were 4 notebooks at one time? Because Ryuk was boasting that he fooled the Shinigami King and got another Note. Also Rem has hers as well and when her friend Jealous died, she claimed his and gave it to Misa..... Now it's down to 3, because another Shinigami [wrapped in bandages like a mummy] reclaimed one.

I kinda wish Ryuk would just randomly kill someone with his note. Isn't that a shinigami's er, job? That would spice things up.

I'm pretty disappointed with the women in death note, except naomi and hal because they are my favorites. the only reason naomi got killed so early was because obha underestimated her intelligence and realized the plot will be screwed up if it continued with her quick analysis.
