This series is finally beginning to become exciting again, well it should be since there are only 5 episodes left. I am just amazed at how the writers cut out so many materials and just condensed things into whatever episodes left. At this point in time, I'm not even sure what's excluded since I haven't read this part of the story. I have, however, read the last volume of the manga so that will be interesting to see if it gets cut out at all or not. As for this episode, I think it's better than the last two we've seen. This is mostly because it's a character development episode focusing on both Mikami and Kiyomi. What's not impressive is Light's increasingly insane plans, which for some reason is not obvious to everyone else around him.

The episode begins with Mikami killing his victim in stylish manner while a narrator explains that Mikami Teru was a boy who had a strong sense of justice and could tell good from evil than the average Japanese adults. In addition to this, Mikami had seen a lot unhappiness with his own eyes. In the present time, Mikami wakes up and goes through his morning routine. When he's inside a train, he sees a boy being bullied by his school friends. Upon seeing this Mikami remembers how the world is divided into two groups, the good and the bad. In high school, he swear to make his class the best class but there were some who opposed to this. When a classmate was bullied, Mikami tried to help but ended up being bullied instead. However, regardless the cruel treatment he received, he was always happy to help others. Just hearing the words "Thank You" was enough to made Mikami to want to help others any number of times.

Sometimes Mikami is lucky enough that the rest of his classmates actually stand by his side, proving his righteousness. In the present time, Mikami decides to take a stand and grab the shoulder of the kid who is bullying the other kid. Unfortunately, that only works when Mikami was a kid. When he was in high school, whenever he tries to stood up, they beat up both him and the victims, making the victims, his enemies as well. Because of this, Teru came to the conclusion that to save the victims, all bullies must be eliminated. In fact, his mother was killed in an accident due to the students who bullied him. Back then, however, Mikami was convinced that someone else must be delighted with the death of the bullies. True enough, the classmates were much happier the next time he returned to class. From then on, he believes that if someone does an evil thing, that person must be punished. However, no matter where he goes, evil people still exist.

Mikami believes that those who can't be reformed must be eliminated from this world. However, he then became afraid because everytime he thinks about it, those people really did end up dead. He wonders if this is because he's special. In order to punish those who should be punished, Mikami decides to become a prosecutor. It was then that a God descended. Mikami believes that God has finally seen him and stood up for him who judged the evil ones. In order to attract God's attention, Mikami spent as much time and efforts to go out to places where he can attract the God's attention. One day, he received the Death Note, causing him to believe that God approves him but also gave him part of God's power. Meanwhile, the Japanese police finds out that Takada Kiyomi, who once was Light's girlfriend in college has now become a newsreader at NHN network and the next Kira's spokeman. Aizawa is shocked to see this because he knows Kiyomi was Light's girlfriend.

Light realises that Mikami has chosen Kiyomi as a spokeperson. He believes that it's just by chance that Kiyomi actually had a relationship with him. Meanwhile, Mikami recalls how Kiyomi did a flawless job as announceof NHN. However, when it comes to Kira, she wasn't the way she portrayed herself. As it turns out, Kiyomi hates crimes and social abused. Later on, Kiyomi reveals that she's on the side of Kira so Mikami decided to chose her to be Kira's spokesman. In order to devoid suspicion off him, Light tells the group that maybe they can use Kiyomi and reveals that she used to be his friend. Light thinks they can use her since he still has her phone number and is sure that she'd like to meet him. However, he believes it'll be hard to convince her to co-operate with them to catch Kira since Light is sure that she's a Kira follower. The plan is to tell her that the Japanese police wants to support Kira and wants direction on what to do.

Because of this, Light contacts Kiyomi, asking her to meet him in a hotel. Kiyomi agrees but wonder if it's okay since Light is living with Amane Misa. Light lies through his teeth and tells Kiyomi that Misa lacks the intelligence to be his partner. Light eventually meets Kiyomi inside a tapped room, telling her that he needs her to tell Kira that the Japanese police wants to cooperate. Their conversation, however, comes to a halt when Mikami calls her on a cellphone. Mikami demands to speak to Light so Light mentions November 26th and 5 sheets of paper randomly to clue in Mikami that he's Kira. Mikami guessed right away and knows that Kira is still being watched. In order to prove Light's innocence, Mikami kills another person on TV. He then asks Light to turn off the bugs in the room. Light informs the police about this and this allows Light to tell Kiyomi that he's actually Kira.

Impression:

I can't believe how stupid the Japanese police seem to be in this episode. Isn't it kind of suspicious to hear Light saying November 26th and 5 pieces of paper out of nowhere? Even if he follows it up with "What are you talking about?". I mean, who would give out such details to someone if the person doesn't know the other person in the first place. That simply implies that Kira is dumb and we know Kira is anything but dumb. What amuses me the most is the amount of girls who fall head over heels for Kira's cool charm. Between Kiyomi and Misa, I have to say that Kiyomi is a lot more attractive. She's the very definition of femme fatale while Misa is too girly to fill that role. I can't help but grinning when Light was badmouthing Misa while he was speaking to Kiyomi. The guy sure knows how to make a girl feel special: talk badly about the girl's opponent. As for Mikami, I can strangely sympathise with his case while he was in primary and high school.

I dont like the way the police agreed to removing the bugs without even questoning why
The manga explained that part better

light wrote that the takada's bodyguards are going to inspect the room so he has no choice but to remove the bugs beforehand

misa is meeting takada next week, should be interesting :D

You didn't mention Matt's first (silent, but it was there!) appearance. ;_; We've all been terrified they were going to cut him out completely. For such a small character, he plays an important part and has a huge fanbase. Personally, I hate Mikami, so I wish they had cut down on his crap and put more Mello and Matt in there.

Amazing episode.
But what was that violin music during the first call?
I've already heard that... Someone know?

i agree -- i don't really know which part they cut from the manga, but they are doing a good job retaining the important parts.

then again, as malek said, the details which cover all plotholes might be left out if not carefully done.

i agree with you when light said to mikami "November 26th and 5 pieces of paper" that was strange if i was a policeman

agreed the police should of looked to the mail to find out if those dates meant any significance, but the police turned off the bugs in the room immediately because they had just seen mikami kill someone over the television to prove he was kira. They didn't want to risk yagami's life even if they do suspect him. This episode is incredibly familiar to how the series began and I am started to get curious about how this will end with 5 episodes left..

But there wasn't any string instrument other than the Cello during the phone call sequence...

And you might have heard Shinji play it in End of Evangelion, as a part of the soundtrack in Master and Commander, or in the intro for Chessmaster 10th Edition...

@ Kidd re. Matt:

Matt --- real name, Mail Jeevas --- was another Wammy's House kid (according to "How to Read Vol. 13" he was third in line to succeed L.) From what we see of him the manga, he's a gamer with a habit for smoking, and he helps Mello out after the whole scarring incident, acting as Mello's partner.

What really interested people in Matt, I think, is the fact that Mello and him seemed to be friends. When Matt eventually got the ax, Mello expressed regret that he'd died, something Mello had never before shown with any other of his henchmen/partners/etc. Plus, they had a mildly amusing conversation once, in which Matt complained about how boring his surveillance job was, and how he wished Mello would just trade with him, etc. It was nice to see Mello patient for once with someone's griping, haha. XD

Oh, btw, Matt DOES appear briefly in episode 32. So the fans got their wish! But seeing as how he didn't show in the manga all that much to begin with, I wonder how big of a role he'll have in the anime. . . .

to reply to Kidd's question about Matt.... they didn't cut him out.

he died, though, almost immediately. he got about as much screen time as he did panels in the manga (12), but he's still awesome

Um, what? Are you serious? Matt was in like, two panels! He showed up, he got shot, the end.

How is he more important than Mikami?! Put down the doujinshi and pick up the actual Death Note manga, please.

I thought that this episode was alright...I just wished that they'd not talk so much about Mikami, it got a little bit boring...

I really like Matt...I wish that he would get a bit more screen time

even though he isn't really the most important new perosn there is, and dies in the end...

Funny, all the people who lived in Wammy's House seem to have a little unique twist added to their character....

Btw, I wonder how old Matt is? Probably around the same age as Mello is though...
