It feels ages since I last blog anything. I just haven't got the energy to do it lately. I hope things will settle down in the next month but in the meantime, I apologise if things are slower than usual. Anyway, this episode covers a lot of things. I tried to compare it with the manga and it seems they use no less than 9 chapters at once. Of course, they didn't use every single plotline, which I'm relieved for because some of them are kind of boring. This episode also indicates that things are wrapping up real soon. I am actually surprised at how effective this episode is in general because it manages to get straight to the point without leaving out the important details.
The episode begins with Souichirou watching over as his wife takes a traumatised Sayu out for a walk in her wheelchair. Souichirou wonders what he should do now. Meanwhile, Ryuk is shocked when he sees Shidou visiting and following him around. Despite this, Shidou refuses to leave Ryuk alone until the apple-loving Shinigami gives him back his Death Note. Ryuk claims that he doesn't know its whereabouts and suggests that Shidou looks for it on his own if he wants it back. Meanwhile, Aizawa tells Light that the Wammy House is not an ordinary orphanage. The orphanage raises the brightest children to suceed L. Amongst the children, the brightest of them all is Near and the one who's closest to Near in terms of intelligence is a boy called Mello. Light immediately guesses that Near is the N who works for SPK while Mello is the boy that N is suspcious about. Upon seeing the sketches of the two boys, Light realises that his battle with L continues.
In order to find Mello, Light asks Misa to go through the list of photos of Mafia men until she finds one without a lifespan. Misa eventually find a man called Kal Snyder so Light uses Death Note to make the man write Mello's address to him. After seeing the address, Light decides to burn it but unknown to him, Shidou sees the address and decides to approach Mello himself. He then grabs the note and drops the note on top of Kal Snyder's head, allowing the guy to see him before telling him to let everyone else to touch it. The mafia are shocked and tries to shoot the Shinigami but Shidou explains that humans can't kill him. Meanwhile, Light decides to give up ownership of his note and to keep Misa's Death Note so he doesn't lose his memories. Back in LA, Shidou finds the delight of chocolate and willingly informs the guys that the 2 fake rules. This causes Mello to wonder if Kira used this notebook and was aware that the 2 rules are fake.
Mello also orders Shidou to get out and to show the face of anyone who comes using a camera. A few days later, someone who claims to be Kira calls Souichirou's mobile. Unknown to Souichirou, "Kira" is actually Misa. Kira claims to know that the notebook that the Japanese police had was stolen. In order to prove himself that he's Kira, the guy tells Souichirou that he'll soon get a notebook which allows names to be seen just by looking at a person's face. Kira also tells him that on the 10th of November at 23:59, all the mafia men whom Kira can find through FBI will die. Kira thinks this is the perfect day to reclaim the Death Note that they lost. A few days later, Kira sends his notebook along with Ryuk. On the night of the attack, Souchirou decides to make the deal. After testing that he can see the name and lifespan of the mafia whose photos they have, the Japanese police launch an attack. At the same time, all of the mafia inside suddenly die.
With this, the police attack Mello's hiding place while Mello notices that something seems to be happening to Shidou. Unknown to him, Ryuk covers Shidou's mouth so that the Shinigami can't say anything. Mello realises that he can't rely on Shidou and decides to run away after asking his subordinates to not let anyone get the note. Eventually, however, the police manages to arrest the subordinates and obtain the note. Light, however, is not satisfied with this and wants to get Mello as well. As the police look through the area, Mello blows up the area and threatens to blow up everything. Souichirou who manages to find himself in a room with Mello is asked to take off his helmet. Because of this, Souichirou can see that Mello's real name is Mihael Keehl. Instead of writing the name on the note as Light requested, however, Souichirou asks Mello to give up. Unfortnately, Mello ambushed Souichirou by ordering his men to shoot at the detective.
Thankfully Souichirou wears an anti-bullet gear. Despite this, he's still wounded due to all of the bullet attacks. Eventually the rest of the team manage to get in and attack Mello's men. Mello retaliates by blowing up the entire area although it seems everyone manages to stay alive although Souichirou is heavily wounded. In the aftermath, Souichirou is dying and therefore is taken to hospital. When Light sits next to him, he can see his son has a lifespan underneath his name and thinks that he's not Kira. Souichirou expresses his happiness that Light is not Kira. Light tries to ask Souichirou to write Mello's name on the note but Souichirou already dies before he can do so. Light eventually decides to return the note to Shidou, who flies back to the Shinigami world. After the Shinigami left, Ryuk tells Light how people who use Death Note is usually unhappy and yet Souichirou died happily believing that his son is not Kira.
Impression:
This tragedy could have been prevented if Souichirou just wrote Mihael Keehl's name into the Death Note. In the end, however, Souichirou remains true to himself and doesn't abuse the note in any way. Also, it's probably better for him to die believing that his son is not Kira. It's probably a better ending than the live-action offers as far as Souichirou is concerned. On the other hand, it neatly sidesteps possible confrontation between Light and Souichirou, eliminating the need for Light to entertain the possibility of killing his father. The best thing about the episode, however, is the inclusion of Shidou, the chocolate-loving Shinigami. It's kind of obvious now that the world of Shinigami must be a boring place. It seems foods don't exist there or at least not in the same manner that it does on Earth. It's also amusing to see this creepy-looking Shinigami looking afraid of Mello. I guess a Shinigami kind of powerless unless he or she is in possession of the Death Note.

On next week's episode: Will Mello die?
It's always interesting to think of what Light could've been if he hadn't gotten the death notebook. I think Soichirou Yagami is proof that Light, while he could've been a good guy (as we see in the arc where he loses memory of the death notebook) he's always had a slight kink in his head.
Soichirou, even though had the chance to abuse the notebook, (like Garten said) he was true to himself and he didn't. So Light is definitely a weird species with some quality that makes him an evil genius.
Now we'll have to see which of the masterminds wins, Mello, Near or Light?
I vote for L... yes I know that's not an option.
Light is a jerk. He doesn't even care that his dad died, just that he didn't write down Mello's real name in the book.
Though I couldn't be sure in the last shot whether he looked sad or angry. At any rate, Light had better get his just reward at the end of the series.
We'll miss you Chief Yagami!.... (and we'll miss L even more).
LOL at your "He needs a haircut" and "N agrees" rollovers XD
It seems that each shinigami has his/her own favorite "earth" foods XD I wonder what Rem's fav food was?
1) How can that explosion not kill you? (In other words - how did Mihael escape the explosion?)
2) Didn't Yagami-san have a headset on? Why didn't Raito write down the name, remember it, and then later on, tell Misa to kill him?
3) So... why didn't Yagami-san kill Mihael immediately?
Oh, for these questions - please don't answer in saying because it's an anime. I despise that answer. I want a good, logical one.
If I remember correctly I will do my best to answer
1. His room was bomb proof
2. He did not tell Light the name because he did not want to be responsible for using the notebook like that.
3. Because again he was not that kind of person and was agains unnecessary killing if a compromise could be made.
xD I think Garden does explain the last 2 in the blog.
prismcolor: No doubt Light remembered Mello's name, but he still needs Mello's face, and the sketch doesn't count.
Daym, this episode was uhh... jam packed...
A question eroded from my brother after watching this episode( having noticed that Souichiro got the eye deal.)
So it can't be any more simpler, I shall state it in a list:
1. November 10th, 11:47 Souichiro got Shinigami Eyes ( Half'd life span.)
2. Raided the Mafia hideout at 11:59, and gets wounded. (0wned)
3. Dies in hospital less than 13 days later than that date. (D3adz lololz.)
Uh... okay... wtf man. He was gonna die anyway in less than 26 days if he didn't do the deal. He said he would do the deal, then die in 13 days due the the FAKE rule. Since no one made an uprising questioning that rule means they did not exceed 13 days yet.
Life span = ?
Life span / 2 = Death from 11/10 - 11/23
Therefore ( Life Span = Death from 11/23 - 12/06 )
CORRECT me if I'm wrong, this was just a thought. I'm damn sure I am missing something... maybe 2... probably a lot.
Garten...I love your commentaries, screencaps and all but the only thing I hate about your blog is....
You're always apologizing! YEAH! we all know you're always busy, and we forgive you, but don't say it everytime you post something please, it's annoying, specially when you post in only two days after some episode >_
If Soichiro used the Death Note he wouldn't get either to Heaven or Hell after he died... What was Light thinking when he was pushing the note into his face?! Bastard.
if i'm not wrong this episode was different with manga
Light knows Mello's name, but not his face. A drawing doesn't count. That's why he can't kill Mello until Mello exposes his face to someone other than his father.
I can't wait 'till next week. Hal Lidner in the shower fanservice oughta be hot. And of course, everyone who's read the manga knows how a certain character gets even more awesome after this week's events.
I was a bit disappointed they made this so short, since it left out a lot of Mello being hardcore- like how the mafia ruthlessly fends off the first raid against them. I love the scene where Mello forces one of his men to make the eye trade and kill their attackers, the guy is obviously more afraid of Mello than he is of halving his life. But they did pay homage to that scene by having Mello scare the hell out of Shidou, which was hilarious.
And muhi_kira, sorry, you're wrong. That scene was one of the few in this episode that WASN'T different from the manga.
In answer to this question:
"Why didn't Raito write down the name, remember it, and then later on, tell Misa to kill him?"
One of the first rules of the Death Note given is that the person can't be killed if the name is written down without a face in mind. Light only saw a sketch of Mello, and Souichiroh is the only one who actually saw his face - even knowing Mello's real name, without the face in mind Light would have had no way to kill Mello.
Even if that weren't so it'd probably be suspicious if one of the only people who knew Mello's real name was a member of the task force, and Mello somehow ended up dying with them, not Kira, in posession of the notebook...
I'm bit confused
1. Light gives up of memories from his own death note (but he still has memories from Misa's note) and gives note to FBI.
2. Mello takes that death note from Light's dad and escapes.
3. Light tells his dad to write Mello's name to Misa's death note before he dies and finally they give that note to shinigami who takes it back to their world.
So, wait a sec. This means that "good guys" don't have anyone death note at all. Or what happened?
This is the way I see it. Each Death Note can have 1 Shinigami owner, 1 Human owner, Both, or Neither. There are three Death Notes available to humans so far: Shirou's (the first one Light uses), Jealous' (the first one Misa uses), and Rem's (which Light picks up after Rem dies)
Light's Death Note:
Shidou - Original Owner
Ryuk - Stole Note from Shidou (assumed) and fooled Great Death God; thus unpunished
Light/Ryuk - Light picks up Note that Ryuk dropped on human ground
Rem - Light gives up ownership and tells Ryuk to exchange Notes with Rem (before Light is imprisoned)
Higuchi/Rem - Rem gives Note to Higuchi
Light/Rem - Higuchi (owner) is killed by Light (borrower)
Light/Police(touchers)/Rem - Custody of Note falls to Police
Light/Police(touchers) - Rem dies; No Shinigami ownership
Souichirou/Police(touchers) - Light gives up ownership of Note for Los Angeles operation
Mafia - Note is exchanged for Sayu
Jack Neylon/Mafia(touchers) - Jack Neylon (A.K.A. Kal Snydar) tests out the Note under Mello's supervision
Jack Neylon/Mafia(touchers)/Shidou - Shidou becomes first Shinigami to touch Note after death of Rem. Mafia members freak out
Police(touchers)/Shidou - Mafia members die. Police storm Mafia safehouse and captures Note
Shidou - Note officially returned to Shidou
Misa's Death Note:
Jealous - Original Owner
Rem - Jealous dies; Rem becomes first Shinigami to touch Note after Jealous' death
Misa/Rem - Note given to Misa
Misa/Light(burrower)/Rem - Misa lets Light borrow Note
Light/Rem - Misa gives up ownership during L's BDSM session. Rem gives Note to Light
Light/Buried/Ryuk - Light makes Rem and Ryuk exchange Notes (before imprisonment) and buries Note
Ryuk - Light gives up ownership during imprisonment. Note becomes human world property since it is buried in human ground
Misa/Ryuk - Misa finds Note with Light's instructions. Gains ownership since she is the first human to touch a "human ground" Death Note
Misa/Light(borrower)/Ryuk - Light borrows Note to maintain memory of Death Notes while he disowns Rem's Death Note (see below)
Rem's Death Note:
Rem - Original Owner
Light - Rem dies; Note on human ground. Light first to touch it
Ryuk - Light gives up ownership; tells Ryuk to deliver to Souichirou
Souichirou/Police(touchers?)/Ryuk - Souichirou receives Note for Storming Mafia Safehouse operation. N.B.: Souichirou does not bring this Note to the operation. He merely uses the state of his ownership for the eye deal with Ryuk. It is also not shown if the rest of the Police can see Ryuk
Ryuk - Souichirou dies
Any errors?
BTW, if I remember correctly. "Light's" Death Note has the English "Death Note" written on it, "Misa's" Death Note has Kana title (I think it's Kana...), and Rem's doesn't have anything written on its cover
to Odiumite:
well, if Souichiro didn't die, then, as owner of Death Note, in 13 days he would realize that 13-day rule is the fake, then confront Light and die (get killed by Light or commit suicide) till 12/06.
@ chaitan"
I don't think he'd immediately deduce that Light's Kira from that. If Souchiro hadn't died, and he found out that the 13 day rule was fake, I'm sure he and the rest of the task force (with Light readily agreeing) would assumed that Rem had written in fake rules to toy with humans or something. Or Higuichi, the "original" owner of that specific Death Note (as far as Souchiro and the others would be concerned).
It would then again put Light and Misa under suspicion, of course . . . but with L gone, I'm sure they wouldn't look THAT far into it, believing that Light had already sufficiently proved himself to be innocent by working with them on a day-to-day basis as L, etc. etc.. (I mean, even when L WAS around, they kept denying it, wondering why the heck L was going to such lengths over what appeared to be a long-shot to them.)
In any case, I doubt Light would kill any of them unless pushed in a really, really, tight corner . . . a lot tighter than "they suspect me a little bit 'cause the death god's rule was fake, and thus I could've potentially been Kira and still lived after 13 days of not killing," etc. I mean, if Light killed them, it would be as if he called both Mello and Near up personally and said, "Hey, guys, I'm Kira!"
wait...souchirou was holding the note with so much strenght o_O maybe..mello couldn't take it..........so
i think...o_O
ok 4 death note 1 have the English rule and the other 3 don't have because are fronds the shigigami one is take frond FBI 2 have the shigigami and the light
i don't like the final
Garten your awsome^ ^
Hahaha, if Im not mistaken, Light actually became intimate with Misa-misa in this episode... look at what she's wearing.. gawd.
Im hating Light more and more. It's fabulous. One thing I have to note is that the manga lacked emotional depth, and the anime actually did a beautiful job in intensifying the loss of characters.
Hats of to Yagami Souchirou.
And L.
Will miss you.
"If Soichiro used the Death Note he wouldn't get either to Heaven or Hell after he died... What was Light thinking when he was pushing the note into his face?! Bastard."
In the universe of Death Note, there is NO heaven and NO hell. Without exception, all humans die, and they go to nothingness.
yokatta desu ne?!!!! hahahaha!! i juz finished deathnote... they were great... comparable to lupin 3rd's deducing powers... ^^,
imagine how late i am?!?!?! watched the anime juz now.. SHAMEFUL....
Can't be later than I am sora...I just found this site and it's already been almost a year....
It's a shame that Souichiro died...I liked him... but too bad that he died so early, then they could've finally worked out that Light is Kira...
The picture of Mello that Near has is so cute.. it makes me giggle.
Does anyone besides me think Mello's real name is hot? Like, seriously...
Everyone's dying now. Cool.
Where is Mello's hideout? I'm doing a one-shot, but I can't find out.
