Well, this is kind of boring and long-winded although it did pick up the pace towards the end thanks to Near. In general, however, it's annoying to see Light manages to fool the majority of the characters. The animation is pretty good though and the animators do a good job in advancing the characters' age 5 years older. Sayu is probably who benefits the most out of this since she now looks a lot more mature and attractive. On the other hand, it's kind of amusing to see Souichirou not looking any older except for probably a few additional grey hairs. The thing that always bothers me, however, is Mello's character design. When I first saw him, I really thought that he is actually a she. In fact, it's still startling to see everyone referring the character as 'he' and hearing Mello speaking with a deep voice.

The episode begins with a flashback to the year 2007. Back then, Roger informed both Near and Mello about L's death. Mello immediately became hysteric, wondering how L died and immediately realised that the guy was killed by Kira. Mello's little outburst came to an end when he heard Near unscrambling his puzzle back onto the floor. Near then tells the two that unless they win and solve the puzzle, they are nothing more than loser. Mello tried to ignore the boy and instead asked Roger which one of them were chosen by L to succeed him. Unfortunately L didn't have the time to choose so Roger wanted Mello and Near to work together. Mello refused and told Roger that he and Mello don't get along. In the end Mello made a decision to let Near to be L's successor. He told the old man that unlike him, Near will do the job calmly without emotion like solving puzzle. Mello also told Roger that he's leaving the orphanage since he's already 15 years old.

In the present time, 5th of March, 2012, Near talks to the President of the United States, informing him about the Higuchi incident and about the existence of a notebook which can kill people simply by writing the people's name on it. That notebook right now is on the hand of the Japanese police. Near also informs the President that the "L" that currently exists is a false L created by the Japanese police to avoid disorder. The truth is, the real L is already dead. Because of this Near and US government establishes SPK, a new and secret unit consisting FBI and CIA agents. Meanwhile, the Japanese police are gathering at Light and Souichirou's house, talking about preventing information leak on the internet. Matsu thinks people who spread the data on individuals they wish to get killed deserve to die. However, Kira gets information from these people so of course, Kira won't killed them. Misa laughs upon hearing this, calling Matsuda on his contradiction.

Light immediately claims that as long as one does not commit a crime and lead a good life, one might see this as an improvement of life. Ryuk simply chuckles upon hearing Light's self-rationalising thoughts. Their conversation comes to a halt when the now grown-up Sayu goes home and makes Matsuda blush when Sayu thanking him for taking care of her father. Matsuda tells Sayu that she sure has grown because she used to be so small. Souichirou and his wife immediately tell the poor guy that they won't let Sayu getting married to a detective. Matsuda, however, gets his hopes up when Sayu tells him that Matsuda is cute and she might have considered going out with him if their age gap is not that huge. Misa becomes happy when Sayu tells Light that now he has a job, maybe he should consider getting married. Not long after this, Souichirou is informed by Aizawa that the Director has been kidnapped so the detectives head back to the station.

Inside the station, they're informed by Aizawa that the demand was made 45 minutes ago from the Director's mobile. As for the exchange, the kidnapper wants to trade the Director with the Death Note. Light is shocked to hear this and asks his father if the Director knows anything about the Death Note. Souichirou remembers that he never told anyone else outside their group even the Director. The next day, Souichirou is informed that an FBI agent wants to see the director. The agent introduces himself as John McEnroe. He explains that obviously the name is a fake name and this is about Kira. Souichirou informs him that the Director is not available and asks the agent to speak to him. Because of this 'John' apologises for being blunt but the FBIs basically are not convinced that Japanese police are capable of handling this matter anymore. Because of this, they want the police co-operation by asking them to hand over the notebook to FBI.

Upon hearing this, Souichirou immediately assumes that the FBIs are the ones who abducted the Director but the agent denies this. Near who overhears the conversation between the two, asks an agent called Lester to not inform others about it. Meanwhile, inside a warehouse, the kidnappers of the Directors are telling Mello that the Director has no idea of the note's existence. So that means with L being gone, Souichirou Yagami, Kanzou Mogi, and Touta Matsuda are the ones who know about it. Mello immediately figures out that there are two notes. One is with the Japanese police and another one is with Kira and Mello intends on getting both of them. His subordinate agrees that if Mello is right, they'll have the power to kill and if they obtain both, they won't have any potential threat. A few days later, Mello finds out from his subordinate that the Director has hang himself dead. Because of this Mello decides to kidnap Yagami Sayu next.

At the same time, the Japanese police are now aware that John McEnroe's real name is Larry Connors. Upon hearing this Light asks everyone to be careful because although the Director didn't know about the notebook, he knew who was working with L. Light's conversation, however, is interrupted when Misa comes out wearing only a lingerie saying good night to him, causing everyone but Light to be embarrassed. Light continues his talk by saying that everyone in their family are also in danger. As soon as he said this, Souichirou gets a phone call informing him that they now want to exchange the notebook for Sayu's life instead. In addition to this, they inform him that the Director is dead. Souichirou is horrified to hear this and after making a few phone calls, he realises that Sayu has been abducted. Light immediately goes on a damage control mode, telling them that maybe Kira was the one who killed the director.

He points out the kidnappers, who want the notebook, won't kill anything by killing the director. Meanwhile, Agent Lester informs Near that the Director of the Japanese Police has been murdered. Near asks Lester of the whereabouts of Mello but Lester can't trace him. This causes Near to wonder if Mello have anything with this. At the same time, the kidnappers call Souichirou demanding an exchange with the notebook. The call was apparently made from Los Angeles. Upon hearing this, Souichirou decides to go to LA. Meanwhile, Near believes that if Kira was the one who killed the Director, it means Kira has access to their information. All of a sudden, they get a phone call from Light (who claims to be L), asking for their co-operation. In response, Near tells Light that he's happy to meet the 2nd L. Light feigns surprise but Near tells him that they are SPK and they know that L is dead. Light is shocked when Near introduces himself as N.

Impression:

Between Near and Mello, I definitely like Near better. Although he seems quiet at first, his intelligence definitely shows up towards the end of the episode when he manages to shake Light's confidence. There aren't that many people who can annoys Light so the fact that Near can do it makes me happy. Mello, on the other hand, seems rather violent and in fact, seems to have set his sight on life of crimes. I also find his tendency to chew on chocolate to be bordering on annoying. This is mostly because unlike L, he doesn't seem to enjoy the food. He just likes breaking it with his teeth and chewing on it. On the other hand, Near's side hobby is a lot more amusing. I can't help but admire anyone who can finish an all white (with only small L word on it) jigsaw puzzle. He also seems to have extreme amount of patience as exemplified by his little match tower. Anyway, I hope with both of them going after Light, Light would feel overwhelmed at the very least.

On next week's episode: A trip to LA!!

I second that... it's my main complain in this second arc and one of the few I had on the first one

But... I don't know. At some point, Near started to get unbelievably irritating. Maybe it's because Raito's my favourite character, but... ack. Strangely enough, I started to like Mello much better (though still not nearly as much as Raito).

Near may be highly intelligent, like L, but he lacks the charm L had, nor does he have any other character traits that stand out. It's one of the reasons why the second arc is so weak compared to the first, in my opinion. There aren't any strong characters to support it. Even Raito seems less impressive than first.

Hmm. One thing that irritated me, and yet at the same time made me happy, about the second arc was how much Near pwns Light in their convos. together. XXDD Seriously. Every chapter was Light inwardly seething, "Dammit, Near! STFU!"

*rolls eyes* Why would you want someone to "replace" L anyway? That isn't what Mello and Near's purposes are to begin with. They have their own stories and personalities. Near may seem similar to L in many ways but he's NOT. It's actually interesting, but I was reading the interview with Ohba and Obata in How to Read 13 and Obata mentioned he thought Near hated L (and liked Mello!). Ohba didn't offer any input on that, but I think that it's a pretty interesting interpretation. Anyway, the thing I think is most interesting about Near is that he's actually quite frightened a lot of the story; he just hides it well behind indifference.

I like both Mello and Near, and I think the way the manga concludes is great. Sad, but great. L was and still is my favorite character, but come on. It's meant to be a story, not fan service. Characters die, the end. Sometimes, their deaths make their stories even more fascinating -- personally, chapter 58 made me love L more. I had trouble getting back into the story afterwards, but eventually I got over it and stopped whining.

Anyway to be honest, I didn't like this episode. It seemed rather rushed and I'm starting to hate Near and Mello. Near is rather cool though, to the least I prefer him more than Mello. Sorry again, I just pity Light in this case since he is my favourite character. The fact remains the story was way better with L in it. Gonna miss L a lot.

damn, I miss L, and the good old crime-solving days. At least Raito seemed motivated.

Btw, since I haven't seen the episode, I wonder what's that last screenshot of L about? I bet its Raito thinking: "oh no! L left his little clone successors behind! Now I have to deal with all the other letters of the alphabet!" In any case, I can't wait to see the episode, primarily for that L-screenshot! Waaah!!!

Their voice actors are as follows,

L -- Yamaguchi Kappei (Ranma in Ranma 1/2)

Near -- HIdaka Noriko (Jean in Nadia Secret of Blue Water, Soujirou in Rurouni Kenshin, famous girl roles are Akane of Ranma 1/2 (coincidence?) and Minami in Touch)

Mello -- Sasaki Nozomu (Yusuke in Yu Yu Hakusho, Enishi in Rurouni Kenshin OVA)

I actually liked both of Near and Mello's voices a lot, I thought they fit rather perfectly. Sasaki Nozomu used to have a very high voice in the early days of his career, voicing mostly young boys, but I think something happened to his throat and now it's naturally deep (you would notice if you ever play the new PS2 YuYu game, he can't sound like Yusuke anymore), but still very charming.

I like Death Note's manga all the way to the end, so I have no complaints for the story, but the new seiyuu are the high points of this episode for me.

I loved the 2nd arc too, once I got used to it. I think the story's theme --- if you wanna call it that, for lack of better word --- changed with the 2nd arc, as well. Originally, DN seemed to be a good ol' genius vs. genius story . . . a battle of the wits with a bit of moral questioning thrown into the mix. The 2nd arc is just the degradation of an ideal (Light wanting to make a "perfect" world and rule it), and the elements of it are more tragic. To me, anyway. Another one of the 2nd arc's themes seems to be something like "two are better than one," I suppose. Ohba once said that Near and Mello are basically two perfected halves of L and his strengths . . . and only when they decide to work together will they be a pretty unstoppable force.

And for the people who don't like Mello and/or Near: give 'em time. I hated them at first, because I only saw them as "L replacements." They're much more than that, though; they have their own unique personalities, etc. I really love both characters now. ^^

I agree that the characters become more sympathetic towards the end of the manga. But can you really deny that the plot keeps becoming more and more derailed towards the end? I don't mean the whole "tragedy" of the ending- that was great. I mean the detective plot that leads to Kira's capture. I thought that the whole procession until Near and Mello ended up catching Kira was pretty illogical.

I really hate to say it., but at times it seems to me as though Obata didn't want to end the success of the series with Ryuuzaki's death and wanted to drag it out a little more. Thus she came up with this 2nd arc. Not that they're uninteresting characters- that's not the main issue here, I believe. Near is a great character and would have looked way better...if L hadn't come before him. In other words, if he hadn't been degraded by the mangaka herself into L's replacement. Near and Mello are indeed very fun characters...but Obata hasn't done them justice in the plot of the 2nd arc, methinks...

I agree that DN would have lost its impact if it wasn't as long and complex as it is with the 2nd arc...However, I steadfastly believe that, compared to the Ryuzaki-arc, something important is missing from the new one. And I don't mean Ryuzaki's character. sooner or later you learn to live without him. I mean something else. As though the element of pure intelligence and competition of before is now missing from the plot. Sure...Near and Light are enemies. But their competition is not by far as powerful and engaging as before!

i was pretty disappointed with this episode. Animation is impressive, but dammit, the pacing was off and the characters were presented in an annoying manner. it's true that near and mello wanted to be like L, but... I don't know, they were introduced merely as L-substitutes. Mello seemed like an L-fanatic at one point, even.

Light's capability to fool people makes him annoying, but that's just how he is. But in this episode, it seemed that he was able to do that simply because everyone else was pretty dumb. In my opinion, Light's cunning was also reduced by like 70%. (I suppose his neurons weren't exercised that much after L.)

I'm really, really disappointed. Everything was awkward! I think Dad Yagami was the only one who acted well in this episode. I hope that the awkwardness is only due to the transition between arcs, and that Madhouse delivers better after this. It's a shame because I think Near and Mello are pretty interesting kids--Near, especially.

April 21, 2007 | Fwee wrote:

@ hiya:

First off . . . just one tiny correction: Obata was the artist, Ohba was the author of the series. ^^;; Anyway. . . .

And as much as I love Death Note, I totally agree with you there. The plot *did* get really crazy, and a lot of the times, had me rolling my eyes in disbelief. Seriously, every time Light had a new, super-secret plan, somehow Near instantly knew ALL about it. Near and Mello both came to some spot-on conclusions about Light's actions, as well . . . conclusions that --- many times --- neither would really ever be able to deduce, unless they could read Light's mind, or something. I mean, this happened in the first arc with Light VS. L, too. Even THEN, I had to suspend my disbelief numerous times . . . but not quite as much as I had to with the second arc.

Anyway, by the end of the series, it seemed like Ohba was really just sick of having to think up ways that Near and Mello would be able to figure out Light's true motives, so she just slapped some pretty unbelievable explanations out there. Or so it seemed to me. XP

This is a good example of why figuring out the plot before you begin is a must (at least with a manga as seemingly complicated and complex as Death Note). Ohba admitted that she came up with the Death Note story on a weekly basis, never thinking ahead. She once said in an interview that each week, she would stress over what to write, and that each chapter started with her just putting Light in a corner, and trying to think of ways for him to get out of it. I think Garten once brought up that perhaps Ohba had never intended to kill L, but with the way the plot unraveled, it became difficult for her NOT to kill him, since, really, Light/Kira would've been able to figure out a way at the time (would've been able to get himself out of that "corner") --- and he did.

No doubt that the first arc is the best of the series. And although I enjoy the second arc a lot now, it could get pretty tedious --- almost like a chore to read at times --- in the manga, so hopefully (since the anime seems to intend to majorly condense the second arc), the anime will make it more entertaining, etc. ;)

Near is a little smarter than L? Ohh C'mon.. That's crap.. Just because L was killed by Raito and in turn Near successfully caught the latter. It doesn't necessarily mean that Near>Raito>L. I still firmly believe that it is the other way around. You see it's just that luck also plays a part, handicap does too.. With Rem on Raito's side, of course L won't stand a chance. He was just lucky enough to have the advantage of having a "death god" on his side. Moreover, the last few episodes was just unbecoming of Raito, I myself thought of the possibility of having the Death Note being completely replicated. Raito didn't? That's just crap.. Totally awkward, of course with that he'd end up being captured by Near. Besides, there was not much of a complicated series of events where Near has a surprise from each. Unlike L - for instance, remember the part where L introduced himself to Raito face to face? Damn, that was just awesome, what a surprise. L was so unpredictable. I doubt Near would do that if he was on L's shoes. L kinda resembles Batman in a way.hehe

No brilliant and really cunning events from this point onwards.

The only reason why Rem helped Light was because of Misa. Rem wanted her to be happy and if L still lived she would surely have gotten caught. Like I said, Near is too cowardly to go outside. Sorry if I doubled post didn't know i did that. I don't think that Light can be smarter than Near since he is the one who suspects him just a little after he talked to him. If Rem didn't really care much for Misa she wouldn't have written L's name down and he still would be alive. So would Rem. Then Near comes into the picture and starts to take over and just after him talking to Light for a little he suspects him. Even if it is 7% but this wasn't my point. What i meant was that Near and L may be similar but they are different. A lot of things are similar to them but when you think about it there are tons of differences. Didn't mean to start a conversation about who is smarter. I just think Near is a little smarter than L. There is more than one Death Note but what do you mean by it being replicated? And about Raito didn't? I'm lost there. And of course Near wouldn't introduce himself to Light. He's to cowardly to do that. Mello on the other hand is way cool because he likes to do his own things.

Light returned a death note to the Shinigami. what about the other note I thought mellow had a note so i was surprised when misa gave ownership of her note. I thought the only note was with Mellow. I really like Mello and Near, personally. I find Mello's addiction to chocolate bars humorous since almost every scene we see him in, he's always got some type of chocolate.

I really like this series because of the different personalities and of the diversity.

I was really sad when L died, because...well he was my favorite character, but when Near came in and I was excited because Near and L are alike in many ways. Near is my second favorite character at the moment.

Note 1) Light
Note 2) Light (hidden by father)
Note 3) Misa
Note 4) Ryuk
Near and Mello are L's personality split, Near is smart (and cute) and Mello is addicted to candy (chocolate) like L.

You know, I actually really like Mello, but at first his voice was a little weird. It sounded too much like a jock's. But it got better as the episode went on, I suppose. I love his hair too, and I think just like his girly looks because it's actually pretty damn sexy to me . Besides, I lorv his cute little belly. don't you just wanna, like, touch it and tickle while giggling? I don't know >>... I'm just weird. Near weirds me out too. He either sounds like a girl or he sounds like a ten-year-old boy, and it really doesn't fit concerning he's 19. >>

Any, this episode was pretty neat, except for the cliche stealing-the-boss-then-your-daughter/sister thing. That disappointed me a little. Also, It lacked L, which is no fun. He didn't deserve to die... he was just too good for the series, I guess.
