Sorry for the late review. I'm just too tired this week and haven’t had the chance to do anything beyond work. I also have some kanji test tomorrow so unfortunately this is the only series I can cover today. As for the episode itself, this one covers a lot of ground as I expected. It's not really up to the point where the first arc ends but we're really close to it and judging from the preview, next week's episode should be that episode. That means after next week's episode, there are only 12 episodes left to cover the reminder 5 volumes of the manga. I think there will be a lot of cuts and edits made in order to compress all 5 volumes into 12 episodes. To give you a comparison, Nodame Cantabile anime omitted at least 3 chapters so that it can cover 4 volumes in 10 episodes. Unlike Death Note, however, that series don't have that much dialogue.
The episode begins with Souichirou and Aizawa asking L for permission to apprehend Higuchi. L agrees on the condition that they don't show their face to Higuchi. He also reminds Watari on what to do if Higuchi makes the slightest move. Watari understands that L wants him to incapacitate Higuchi without killing the guy. With this, Souichirou approaches Aizawa and asks him if he has something to cover his face and when the guy confirms this, Souichirou asks Aizawa to back him up. They then order Higuchi to get out of his car and proceed to blindfold and handcuff the guy as soon as he came out of the vehicle. With Higuchi in captivity, Light asks Mogi to put the headphone/speaker on Higuchi so L can talk to the guy. L then asks Higuchi how he killed his victim and if he doesn't co-operate, they'll use any means necessary to make him talk. Higuchi has no choice but to mention that if you write a name of a person whose face you know, then the person will die.
Higuchi mentions that the note in question is in the bag inside his car so Souichirou gets the note and tells L that there are indeed names of people written in it. He, however, is shocked when he sees Rem in front of him. He tells L that he sees a monster and tries to shoot at it but L reminds the guy that he has no gun on him. Mogi who tries to help Souichirou stands up ends up picking up the note and see Rem as well. Souichirou finally realises that those who touch the note can see Rem as well. Upon hearing this, L asks Mogi to hand him the note and true enough, as soon as he touches it, he can see the Shinigami as well. L suddenly remembers about notebook at Aoyama and how Light met Misa at Aoyama. Before he can think about it, however, Light already grabs the note out of interest. From this, he comes to the conclusion that there are two notebooks. His thought comes to a halt when he realises that he doesn't have the note and Light is now screaming in terror.
Unknown to L, Light is not screaming due to shock from seeing Rem but due to the rush of memories coming back to him. After Light finished screaming, L wonders if the guy is okay although he can understand that anyone will be shocked upon seeing the monster. Light, however, becomes calm and tells L that first thing first, he'd like to match the name listed on the note with the names of the victims. L agrees and doesn't know that Light's true personality is now fully shown on his face. He secretly declares his win as was planned. A flashback then shows Light forfeiting his ownership of Rem's note, which Misa gave to him not too long ago. He then confirmed that the ownership has returned to Rem before asking Rem to give the note to Ryuk. This essentially made Ryuk the owner of the note so Light asked Ryuk to drop the note so he can pick it up again. Ryuk pointed out that the note just goes around in circle but Light believed it would be useful one day.
Light then returned the note that Ryuk gave him and asked Ryuk to give it to Rem. Light then asked Rem to give the note to a person who is high in an organisation ladder and with greed for promotion. A person who will use Death Note to achieve it. He guaranteed that if Rem does this, Misa will be released and if she does not after a few years, then Rem can kill him. In order to save Misa, Rem agreed with Light's plan and flew away after taking Light's original Death Note. Light then revealed to Ryuk that he will ensure that he too will be imprisoned like Misa and under watch 24 hours a day. While he's imprisoned, Light plans on forfeiting the note and erase his memory of it. If the murders continue, then L would have no choice but to release them. Light believed that as someone who lost his memory, he would try to capture Kira because he was that kind of person. Upon hearing this Ryuk wonders if Light thinks he can capture the guy that Rem will give his Death Note to.
Light confirms this but there was just one problem, Rem once mentioned that his memory will only return if he regains the note permanently. If he just touches it, he will forgot about it again. In the present time, Light realises that in order to make this possible, he has to kill Higuchi. That way the note's owner will be him and his memory won't disappear. With that in mind, he presses his watch to reveal a secret compartment containing a piece of Death Note paper. Light then pricks his own finger with a needle so he can get a blood to write Higuchi's name on the piece of paper. At the same time, L asks Souichirou to take Higuchi back to his car. By the time Souichirou gives his confirmation, Light has finished writing Higuchi's name on the paper. Light then tells L that if they analyse the book, they might be able to find something about it. The truth is L just wants to stall the time so that Higuchi will die while he's still holding the note.
As soon as 40 seconds passed by, Higuchi suddenly gets a heart attack. Light feigns shock although later on he smirks and tells himself that L will be his next target. In the aftermath, the investigation group gathers in L's hotel to figure out what to do next. Aizawa finds the how to use instruction and notices the first line: "a human whose name is written on this note will die". Aizawa then continues to list the rest of the rules to the investigation group. There are, however, 2 additional notes. The first one is "If you make this not unusable by tearing it up or burning it, all the humans who touched the note till then will die". Unknown to the rest, Light was actually the one who asked Ryuk to write the additional rules. A flashback then shows Ryuk asking Rem if the 'old man' will be angry if he writes fake rules in the note. Rem confirmed that there is no law against what Ryuk was about to do because of this, Ryuk decided to add the additional two rules into the note.
In the present time, Matsuda regrets his decision to want to see the Shinigami. He thinks he shouldn't have touched the note. Souichirou reminds him that in that case, Matsuda won't be able to know what kind of investigation is going on. Matsuda immediately changes his mind upon hearing this. Aizawa then mentions the other additional rule: "If the person using the note fails to continuously write names of people to be killed within 13 days of each other, then the writer will die". Matsuda realises that this means Light and Misa are not Kira because the two are still alive up till now. L, who is not convinced, decides to ask Rem if there are other notes in the human world. Rem decides not to give L the straight answer. Instead she tells him that whether there might be another one or not. Not wanting to give up, L asks her if the rules on the other note will be the same if these notes exist. Light, however, is not worried because he knows L won't get this info from Rem.
True enough, Rem tells L that although there are many notes in the Shinigami's world, the rules are the same. Unfortunately for L, this means he has no more reason to detain L and Misa. After being pressured by the others, he decides to let go of the two. Light tells L that even with this, the case is not completely closed. Deep down, however, Light is happy that he and Misa will be 100% innocent. He then goes on his delusion trip again by claiming that in every world, the Gods always make the rules. He declares that L will fall before his made-up rules and will die for going against the new world's God. Because Misa is not a suspect anymore, she can't no longer stay in the building. Misa decides to part with Light, asking him to write to her. After everyone left the two of them alone, however, Light uses the opportunity to tell Misa that he wants her to dig something up when no one is noticing her anymore. Misa realises that this means Light's memory has returned.
Misa then goes to the forest to find her note. Along with the note is a letter from Light, asking Misa to write Ryuuga Hideki's real name into her note. Unfortunately for Misa, she can't remember the name. While despairing, Ryuk appears in front of her. Misa then gives the Shinigami an Apple. Ryuk is glad about this because human world's apple is juicy while Shinigami's apple is green and apparently taste bad. After this, Misa tells Ryuk that she would like to exchange Shinigami eyes with him. Ryuk warns her that she's done the exchange with Rem, thus her life is already halved. Misa, however, doesn't care. Misa then returns to the hotel so that Light will touch a piece of her death note. She also tells Light that she can't remember Ryuuga's name but she has done the eye exchange with Ryuk so she can do it again. Light pretends to be concerned about Misa's lifespan although it's obvious that things have gone according to his plan.
Impression:
I still think the difference between Death Note-equipped Light and Light without Death Note is very stark. How can anyone turn from being so evil to nice and vice versa just because he gains his memory back? Isn't there a trace of guilt or something to that extent in Light? Also, normally after going through a certain kind of camaraderie with another person, in this case, L, people usually find it hard to kill that person. I'm just puzzled because it seems as if Light has turned from human to a complete monster in the space of a few seconds. The strange thing about this is that Misa actually still retains some of her personalities whether she has her memory or not. Light is the only one whose personality is like night and day when Death Note is added or subtracted from his life. I just think the series would have been far more interesting if Light has problem about killing L. Or at least show him hesitating about continuing his plan.
While I realise that the series is not realistic in the first place, I think certain elements should have been based on reality. Take Misa's lifespan, for example, a normal human's life expectancy is maybe 75 years to 80 years old. Since Misa took the first deal with Rem, if her maximum life is 80 years old, then it means she only has 40 years left. Now that she has made a deal with Rem, does this mean that she will only live until 20 years at the most? In that case doesn't that mean she's near death or should have been dead soon? Oh well, at any rate, the series is going to come to reach the end of the first arc. Prior to this episode, I thought I would have dreaded it but I guess I'm quite used to the idea by now and just want to see how things unfold after next week's incident takes place. I am sure those of you who don't know about it will enjoy it more so if you already know the story, please use the spoiler tag if you want to talk about it.

On next week's episode: Silence.
About her lifespan, there's a rule that says that if a shinigami SAVES the life of a human, that shinigami will die and, get this, THE SHINIGAMI'S LIFE WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO THE SAVED HUMAN. Thus, theoretically, if Jealous had killed enough people, Misa could've had a lifespan of 1000+ years. Cutting that in half would only be 500 years. Now, Misa cuts her life in half again, down to 250, but now REM will save her life, so, if we may add another 1000 years, now Misa's lifespan is back up to 1250+
Of course, this is assuming that there is no "cap" on a human's lifespan. There's another rule that says a human over the age of 124 cannot be killed with the death note. Perhaps there may be a cap of, say 150 years?
Here's a more "friendlier to the eye" approach
1. Misa's original lifespan (20 yo, because she was about to be killed by that stalker)
2. Jealous saves her. (20 + 1000 = 1020)
3. Misa trades life for eyes with REM (1020 - 20 / 2 = 500)
[NOTE: the reason for the -20 is because it only calculates REMAINING lifetime, not TOTAL lifetime]
4. Misa trades life for eyes with RYUK (500 - 20 / 2 = 240) [same reason for the -20]
5. REM saves Misa's life (240 + 1000 = 1240)
So, that's the final sum of Misa's theoretical lifetime: 1240 years. I hope she has eternal youth as well...
ALTERNATIVELY, because it's stated that SHINGAMI ARE LAZY, perhaps we can reduce that lifespan from 1000 to perhaps 100.
1. Misa's original lifespan (20)
2. JEALOUS saves her. (20 + 100 = 120)
3. Misa trades life for eyes with REM (120 - 20 / 2 = 50)
4. Misa trades life for eyes with RYUK (50 - 20 / 2 = 15 years of life left)
5. REM saves Misa (15 + 100 = 115)
So Misa has 115 years of life left, and will live to the grand old age of 115 (remaining lifetime) + 20 (current age) = 135. Hey, it's still a world record.
Garten-sama...
You're just too good of a person ^__^ . I actually think the author really did some research about serial killers. One more thing, regaining the memory of killing thousands of people and all the feelings you've been through since the first killing is really something to consider important when you're analyzing the whole LIGHT situation. Of course the change in face expression has to be this big 'cause we're talking about animation here, but imagine all the feelings of: SUPRISE (first time he killed and it worked); JUSTICE (he claims to be doing so) bla bla bla that leads to the main feeling, DESIRE TO KILL. I don't think the previous Light were desiring to kill people in this level just to accomplish JUSTICE and POWER.
Well that's my personal opinion...
Atashi:
Shinigami life span issues aside, I thought the eyes trade required sacrificing half of your remaining lifespan--which is quite different from half of your total lifespan.
Good luck on your kanji test. ^_^ Are you taking a class at a university or is this some independent thing?
Hmmm. Unless I'm mistaken, Ryuk stated that the shinigami eyes will cost them half of their 'remaining' lifespan. Now, Misa's lifespan was originally very short, but the shinigami Jealous changed that. We don't know how much time was added to her lifespan thanks to that, however... even if only twenty years were added... 20 / 4 is still 5 years worth of life after the stalker accident, which seems to match with her death at age 25/26.
There is still another issue to factor in when calculating Misa's remaining lifespan.
Time between the realm of the Shinigami and humans flows different. The human lifetime seen by Shinigami is shown in Shinigami years NOT human years.
This is not a simple calculation of adding and substracting shinigami and human years with each other directly.
No. One must convert Shinigami years to human years in order to perform the calculations.
Good luck on your kanji test. ^_^ Are you taking a class at a university or is this some independent thing?
Thx. It's just an independent thing. I haven't got the money to go back to university. The quality of the teaching would be better though if I go to uni.
And thanks to those who remind me of the added lifespan Jealous gave Misa.
The episode was great, it covered 4 chapters right? A lot has happened... However since we calculated every episode like 2 or maximum 3 chapters we (especially me!) weren't expecting what happens in the next episode for at least 2 or 3 more eps...
*spoiler!!! - read at your own risk!*
Um, Garten....
You made some mistakes and swapped L and Light's names at some points... and one of the 'L' should be Rem (shocked at seeing Rem, not L).
Anyway, can't wait to see the next episode. And just like the title, I think I will fall to Silence when I see the incident happens... Though I wonder how would they be able to finish this up in 12 episodes. Will they make another original ending after the live action movie?
I'm quite sure that in manga has no mention about added lifespan, that it's generally Jealous' lifespan that Misa gained, like it was explained in anime.
I'm not sure though was that rule there, but if it was...I think it just confirms what is common sense that as being saved, she lives longer.
So I'm guessing this is just something added to anime to make trade less harsh.
well that was expected of this episode verry nice one i feel the series is back i also think that it was good putting some ennoying episodes because it added importance to the series. About Missa lifespan i dont really agree with Garten because he forgot that she was spared of being killed once the shinigami who had her death note before so we have to consider that she is supposed to be already dead things changed
to the life span thing it goes by years left not years total
Well, I guess the Death Note is the catalyst for Light's conniving and evil nature. I think that only the Death Note could have done it. Like, if this were an experiment, we would find that the Death Note is solely responsible for bringing out that side of Light.
Okay, well, I guess I'm just stating the obvious. XD
I hope that the next episode is done really, really well as a tribute to L's awesome character.
humans aren't supposed to be able to change their own lifespan, whether through accident or with intention (ex: suicide). So that means that either authpr ignored that fact, or that in actuality, Rem and Jealous didn't have that many kills in the first place.
Oh no...
I'm so nervous about next weeks ep. *hyperventilates*
But as N said, I hope they make next weeks ep a really good one for L's sake.
On a happier note, I enjoyed this episode.
D:.. *hyperventilates too* Oooh, I almost don't want to watch anymore!! I stopped readint the manga right after volume seven, not EVER did I continue...
yeah... it's been mentioned earlier, but the eye deal does work on "remaining" time left.
so, say you were supposed to live to 80 and say you're 20 now. After the eye deal, you will live til 50.
80 - 20 = 60 years left on your lifespan.
Half of 60 is 30.
20 years old + with 30 years left = you will die at 50.
If you do the deal twice, you will die at 35.
As everyone has already said, I'm pretty sure that Misa's lifespan was lengthened a good bit by the Shinigumi Jealous.
I'm really dreading next week's episode. For L's sake I hope it's a really great episode.
@ pattyd and Atashi:
Um, Misa does die at 25-26 so much as she . . .
That's what Ohba said in the How to Read interviews, anyway.
BLAH. I mean that DOESN'T die so much as she
@ Anacone:
No, the manga DOES mention the added life-span. When we first meet Rem and Misa, Rem tells Misa all about it in one brief panel, explaining that Jealous' life-span is now her own.
I'm sure everyone here is intelligent enough to understand this third grade math - so stop trying to explain it.
Q: If DN users can't go to Hell or Heaven, where do they go? This doesn't apply to people who have only touched it, correct?
Can you imagine what it must have felt like during the memory-comeback-scenes? Pure ecstasy that is...
I also was thinking about the lifespan thing. Does it count for total lifespan (birth to death) or does it count for life remaining(current age to death)? For example, lets say that for an even estimate that Misa is 20ys old. That would mean roughly, she has 60ys to live. If the deal goes on life remaining that would me cutting that in half leaves 30 years. Cut it in half again and it's 15. So Misa would live to be 35 (Just for sake of argument) instead of the 40-20, leaving her to live to forty. But. . . I just realized that I was ranting for nothing. Whether it be 35 or 40 its just five year. In any case of how long she many years she may life (even if she had cut a 5 year lifespan in half twice) the difference isn't that significant. The significance is that she cut it twice, not the time different of total lifespan vs. lifespan from current age.
@ tangey:
Maybe they turn into shinigami?
I don't want to see next week's episode. I really don't. But at the same time, I'm really curious as to how fans will react to the episode and Mello and Near, who'll probably appear in Episode 26. I personally dislike Near (despite his somewhat cute appearance) and I can tolerate Mello. I used to dislike him and his "gang", though.
I look forward to seeing Mikami Teru. I don't know how he is in later volumes as I have yet to read them, but I really liked him in volume 10.
@Moi:
I failed to find that panel, but I must admit I haven't read official translation. Can you clear me which chapter that explanation is.
@ Anacone:
In volume 4 (chapter 27) of the manga, Rem tells Misa, "[Jealous'] life was transferred to the girl he saved." ^^
I just finished reading the manga, oh god, the second part of it with Mello and Near is just horrible, for me Death Note finishes at:
@ mochino
Yeah, i wish it had ended there too, then Light would've won. I guess i was on his side all along.
@Moi:
I was thinking that there might be "mistranslation" in scanlation, when I saw it in anime, but I weren't just admitting it yet.
Thx for clearing it out.
@ tangey
In chapter 107 of the manga, Ryuk has this to say about where people who have used the death note go after they die:
QUOTE: "if this were an experiment, we would find that the Death Note is solely responsible for bringing out that side of Light."
Hum... XD not really that obvious because if this were an experiment it would be scientifically correct to assume that if only one case is false, then all your theory should be redone. Well, Misa gets her memory back and her desire to kill is solely determinated by Light's wish not her own desire. Summarizing it all, what I mean is Light's the only crazy bitch here... not the Death Note :0
omg there were so much spoilers and it was too tempting that i read them all... DAMN! i shudtn have...
I was wondering about Misa's lifespan earlier myself. However, the Japanese are the longest-lived people aren't they? I think its around 90-95 years for females, so taking 90, cut once, 45, and then cut again...that would work, right?
ive never watched it but i rly wanna
what is l's real name anyway?
so they kill heguchi to shut him up and finally light trades half of his life with ryuk for the eyes
thats sick you could know peoples names
deth note is awsome my fav person is ryuk
death note is a good- no great show Ilike the anime mangas and the movies
Ok but you arr forgetting the thing with jelous. Jelous gave up his life and misa would get the rest of his shimigami life. Depending on how much life he had misa could be really old like live to a few years over a hundred if she did not many any deals.Hence the possiblility that she is going to die soon is not so much of a possiblility if she had made the twice.(specially with what Rem did.she would of probably had a bit more of a life span then humanly possible) Though at the end of the series Misa kills her self .Did this prove that that was the end of her life span? and that allowing her to make the other eye deal would of just allowed her to kill her self quicker?

It would be better if you read the manga before watching the anime, just so you know that
which proves that her lifespan should last longer than merely her 20s, which in turn confirms that Misa did receive some extra years of living form Jealous and Rem.
The anime is excellent, yes, but about what happened to Misa at the end of everything, there's a huge difference with the manga's plot...
Desu/Note:
I'm pretty sure that Ohba said that
I think that when you possess a Death Note you become possessed by evil or start to have dark thoughts. As proven by Misa when although she finds out she is second Kira she still remains sweet and kind although with a dark streak, but when she gains her memories back she becomes rude and dark and gothic like.
Same with Light whom at first had been fine with the Death Note until he starts using it more and more; it was said by Light to Ryuk in the an episode where they first meet that the Death Note seems to have the power to make you want to at least try it out and want to use it more and more after you find out it was real: Does the Death Note also have the power to possess you? Is that why your memories are wiped out?
It truly seems that way: how Light acts and how he speaks and looks; Light laughs when he kills and he seems to enjoy peoples pain and he has no regret of playing with peoples feelings: even though he said he would never do that to anyone when L said he wanted him to trick Misa into helping them.
Someone please explain this to me. I finished watching the entire series, but this is one part I never understood.
What is the whole point of the circle thing where one of the Death Notes is passed around to Ryuk, Rem, Light, then back to Rem. How does that benefit Light in the future?
Oh and post in spoilers. I hate things being ruined for others and myself.
Lady_Imrahil's comment has some point.
Together with "shinigami ARE lazy" and do not "work" unless they have to Misa may not have gotten that much at all.
It is often enough stated that suicide is a valid, somewhat "normal" cause of death ("there is always the possibility that...").
When suicide is valid for the Death Note it should be valid the other way round: Misa would not have committed suicide if she had had much lifespan.
All Jealus did the last time of his existence was to watch Misa (said in the anime somewhere).
Depending on what he had before: Probably nothing to get there...
And it was Jealous' Book which Misa uses, that means it did NOT add to Rem's life.
So all one can say about Rem's life for sure is that, which she got from L and that old man (would surely have died soon anyway...).
L didn't live THAT healthy either as far as I've seen it.... Maybe she got ... 10 Years? :)
So death at age 26 makes sense... (or 27 when it happens one year later - which is not visible in the anime - but the interview; in that case make the 24 below into 28 years)
The 6 years are her "new" or remaining life span. Doubled two times that'll be 24. Since she had NO remaining life spam ( 0! ) when Jealous saved her the 24 years must come from L (and Watari). That means they together would have had 24 (28) years.
I just realize that some of the lifespan must be from Jealous, because otherwise Misa would have died before she got Ren's lifespan...
All said above one can can conclude that Shinigami are VERY lazy and L+Watari would have soon died anyway...
Other way would be: Since Light died of Death Note use by Ryuk that may have interfered with Misas lifespan... Would contradict the "one name = one death, one can't drag others into death!"-rule but it's Misa's choice anyway and from that situation after Light's death she can perhaps rethink her own life span/plan....
That's the test of the plan, which Light puts into action in the last episode we see Rem...
Because that's exactly what happens (only difference: no shninigami dies in the test... :)
btw:
This may be some coincidence (according to how he came up with that name, it is), but i googled "misa suicide" and found a site on which said:
MISA (Mind inducing Substance Abuse) - usually leads to suicide...
... This part in the series really pissed me off, simply because L let Light touch the notebook. It was so out of character for him to do something so reckless when he suspected that 1) Light was the first Kira, and 2) he knew that Kira's power passed between people, AND 3) Light said that if he were Kira, he would have relinquished the powers of Kira willingly. You'd think that L would have put two and two together and immediately ordered the notebook to be kept out of Light's hands, but noooo...
Well...it's mine now...
I still don't understand Light's plan to retrieve his memories. Can anyone explain the plan?
the creators of deathnote made the difference between light with the note and without it such a huge difference because they wanted to show how much the deathnote "corrupts".
atleast thats what i think.
L was cool im angry that he died
