Sorry for the late entry but I've had a busy day today and it's impossible to write anything during daytime. Anyway, the first question that I have when I saw this is whether the green tea ice cream part was Madhouse's attempt to advertise product on their series. If it is, they did a good job because I now have sudden cravings for green tea ice cream. :( This episode also turns out to be a lot more amusing than I expected it to be. Unfortunately the character design continues last week's lousy streak especially when the scene in question is a long shot one instead of a close-up. As a side note, Ryuk's appearance in this episode is quite amusing. I'm really tempted to pre-order the R2 DVD now since the first press version will come with Ryuk figurine. The thing is, figurine that comes with DVD or manga usually tend to be rather low in quality. So far I haven't seen a perfect figurine of Ryuk though.

The episode begins with L requesting the police to show him all footage of Raye Penber entering the train station gate up to his death. Matsuda informs him that Raye Penber entered the Shinjuku station's west entrance at 15:11PM. He then boarded the Yamanote line at 15:13PM but they can't see who was following him at this point. Raye met his death at 16:42PM when he stepped out of the train. L immediately realises that there's something suspicious about this since the envelope that Penber carried when he entered the train gate disappeared after he left the train. In addition to this, Raye looked as if he was trying to look towards the train before he died. L thinks it'll be interesting if Raye was actually looking at Kira. Meanwhile, Ryuk wonders why Light has been busy writing in Death Note lately. Light points out that if he suddenly has to be hospitalised, this will stop people from thinking that the death stops during those times.

The next day, L receives a phone call informing him that Ray’s fiancée disappearing, Misora Naomi has disappeared. The police thinks that she probably committed suicide but L doesn't believe this because the Naomi that he knows is an excellent FBI agent with strong determination. If anything, she'd go after Kira herself. Because of this, L decides to focus their investigation on the people that Penber was investigating: the family of sub-chief Kitamura and the family of the police chief, Yagami Souichirou. He orders the police to install wiretaps and surveillance cameras inside their homes. At the same time, Light is busy removing traces of his hacking. Once he's done this, all that's left is to hide the cover of Death Note. Ryuk is amused when he sees Light sewing a pocket into his wallet. He thinks Light must be popular with the ladies because of it. Light, however, attributes his popularity to his look. Because of this, he wonders if Ryuk is not popular. XD

Back to L, the police object to his request to install wiretaps and surveillance cameras in their Chief and Sub-Chief's houses. They believe that they'll be fired if they breach this privacy rights. L, however, reminds them that they already risk their life by doing this investigation. Upon hearing this, Souichirou asks L what is the likelihood that Kira is actually in one of the two families. L thinks that it's around 10 percent...or more like 5 percent. Souichirou's subordinates protest this small likelihood but Souichirou bravely tells them that so far they still don't have a suspect so even if the likelihood is 1%, they must investigate this thoroughly. The truth is, Souichirou simply doesn't believe that his family is a suspect because of this, he orders his subordinates to install the cameras and make sure that every single angle is being monitored even the bathroom and the toilet. :o L then tells the rest that he and Souichirou will monitor the Yagami house.

The next day Light enters his house and is surprised to know that no one is at home. Upon seeing the door to his room, however, Light becomes alert. Nevertheless, he decides to calm down and enter his room as if nothing is wrong. In the process, he drops a piece of card that was wedged in between the door and the door frame. Inside the room, Ryuk suggests that they play games since no one is around. The Shinigami, however, becomes confused when Light does not say anything and simply changes his clothes before going out again. Meanwhile, Souichirou is surprised when he sees Light placing the card in between the door and the frame again, wondering if there is something in Light's room that Light doesn't want anyone else to see. L, however, thinks that 17 is a sensitive age so something like that is not strange since he has done meaningless things as well. Having said that, L wonders if Souichirou has shared info about Kira with Light.

Souchiro denies this and claims that he never reveals confidential info to his family. Meanwhile, Light is now walking outside while Ryuk follows him. After checking his jacket and is sure that there is no voice taps in it, Light tells Ryuk that there are surveillance cameras and microphones installed in his house. Ryuk is confused to know this since the little paper wedged between the door and the frame didn't fall. Light reveals that the paper was just a fake so that people think he's checking whether or not someone has entered his room. The real trap actually lies in the door knob/handle. Everytime Light closes the door, he lowers the handle by 5mm. When he's about to enter the room, he'll lift the handle. If he can't do it then it means someone has entered his room. However, this on its own is not enough to determine if someone has entered his room. Because of this, Light also placed a mechanical pencil lead above the door hinges.

Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot
Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot

If someone opens the door, the mechanical pencil lead will be crushed. Up till now, Light usually takes it first before he opens the door but today it's crushed. Ryuk suggests that maybe it's Light's parents who entered the room but Light thinks that if that had been his parents or Sayu, they would not have noticed the paper trap to the point that they'll put it back where it was. After making a trip to a book shop, Light asks Ryuk what is he going to do with Apples. Ryuk realises that because of the camera, until the Apple enters his mouth, someone can see it floating in the air. Upon hearing this Light tells Ryuk that since Shinigami can't die from starvation, he thinks it'll be okay if he doesn't give Ryuk any Apples. Ryuk panics upon hearing this and tells Light that to him, Apple is similar to Alcohol and Tobacco for humans. If he doesn't get any for a long time, he would become strange. By this he means that his body will twist around and go upside down.

Light tells Ryuk that at one point he gave L a hint: "Shinigami only eats Apple". Because of this, if Ryuk wants his Apples, he has to help Light locating the cameras inside his room. When the two are back inside Light's room, Light purposely opens a porn magazine he just bought at the bookshop. His father is shocked to see this but L thinks it's normal for a 17 years old. Having said that, L feels as if Light is doing this so that people think the paper trap was there because he hid this kind of magazine inside his room. Souichirou becomes angry upon hearing this and asks L if he suggests that his son could be Kira. Without hesitation L tells him that's the truth and that's why he ordered to have camera installed inside Souichirou's house. Back inside Light's room, Ryuk manages to find camera inside the air conditioner. When he learns about this, Light realises that even the police don't usually do this so he believes that L was the one who suggested this.

Light hid his porn magazine inside another book before going down to have dinner with his mother and sister. Upon seeing the family having dinner in front of the television, L makes a phone call to Aizawa, asking the guy if the Kitagawa family is also watching television at the moment. Upon receiving confirmation, L asks Watari to broadcast an announcement. The announcement basically informs the viewers that In an effort to capture Kira, ICPO has gathered 1500 investigators from around the world to work in Japan. Sayu is surprised at the number but Light understands that the dining room is probably tapped as well so L can see the reaction of each person. In retaliation, Light says outloud that he thinks ICPO is stupid for making this public announcement. He thinks if they want to investigate, they have to investigate secretly. Since FBI agents who went undercover were killed, he thinks announcing this publicly will just increase the casualties.

Because of this, Light believes that this is just a bluff that the police created to scare Kira. Upon hearing this, L suddenly smiles, telling Souichirou that his son is pretty smart. That night, Light grabs a bag of potato chips and takes it into his room. Inside the room, Ryuk tells him there are 64 cameras inside the room. Light then opens his potato chips bag and reveals a portable TV inside of it. This way, he can still execute the criminals without L knowing about it. By doing this, Light appears as if he's studying while criminals around him are dead. After he finished with the TV, light drops the bag of chip into the trash can. Later on, Watari tells L that a 9 o'clock news reported that a bribery and robbery suspects were both dead in their cell. L, however, is not sure if he can let the Yagami family off his suspected list. The next day, Light dumps his potato chip bag to a large plastic bag so his mother can take it to the trash collector. Upon seeing this, Ryuk wonders if Light doesn't regret wasting 39,800 Yen on that portable TV.

Impression:

Did anyone else see the expression on Ryuk's face when he saw the porn magazine? I think he turned into a stone or something like that. I thought that was hilarious. My problem with this scene is that, despite the magazine, Light couldn't look less interested in it. What kind of a person has little to no expression while 'reading' porn magazine? I'm not surprised that L quickly assumed that Light probably bought the magazine to cover his tracks. Admittedly, Light can always claim that he bought the magazine to study the pattern on the barely there swimsuit (yeah, right!) but since Light is not a fashion designer student, his lack of interest in the magazine is essentially a giveaway. The other thing that annoys me about Light is the way he overdoes almost everything to convince someone. For example, instead of being quiet and acting disinterested in the news that L purposely aired, he went out of his way to make a comment about it.

In the end, I feel that Light actually creates a trap for himself. He always creates this seemingly perfect alibi for himself that in the end, they seem too perfect and scripted. A few episodes ago, he thought that by getting rid of Raye Penber, he’d be free from L's suspicion. Instead, he and his family is now the main target of investigation due to Raye Penber's death. On a less serious note, I find Ryuk's addiction to apple to be extremely amusing. That twisted pose that he made on the floor was comedic gold. I can't wait till he twists his body even more as he's deprived of Apple. I was also amused when one of the detectives look so eager to get his Green Tea ice cream and looked disappointed when someone else got it first. :) Anyway, if my recollection is reliable, then next week's episode should be an interesting one.

Rhetorical question:

You just broke a vase in the teacher's room and the teacher asks the class "Who broke the vase?!". No one knew who did it but you know you're going to be in BIG trouble if she finds out that it was you who did it. What would you do/say?

a) Be quiet and say nothing
b) "It wasn't me"
c) "It was Light-kun who did it!"
d) "I was in the toilet"
e) "Didn't the vase look okay this morning?"

Anyway I love the picture jokes too XD Thanks for the summary too!

It occurs to me that the kind of thinking Light would have to put into all of this (ex: the door with the fake trap, the note in the watch, the drawer..) he must really be thinking about this ALL THE TIME. I think to a degree the human mind likes to wander, plus how could anyone spend all the thoughts on scheming? He must really want his goal.

Lol. Something you'll notice is that Light has 0 interest in women. Not that he's gay, he's just a-sexual. He just doesn't care, as if all his hormones went into evil glee instead. He only ever pays attention to a female if it's for the purpose of manipulation -- he's probably never had a single impure thought about the opposite sex. To him, a girl is just a weak, easily-manipulated person.

I'll second that. I don't think Light has any interest in girls or guys for that matter. He's just not interested in sex. I think L picked up on that during the magazine scene.

Oh yeah, Light will get it on with a girl, and we can also assume that it at least feels good, but to Light it would be no different than pretending to be friends with people, smiling and shaking hands; just things you do to get your way.

So he would probably look at Misa and think: girls want this and that, so if I do this and that, then she'll do as I say BWAHAHA! He doesn't even pay attention to her unless he wants her to do something.

Light's ALL about scheming and killin'. That's what he gets off on. Everything else would be just a nescisary waste of time to him.

I agree with what Garten said about Light's overdone actions on concealing his identity as Kira. The time where he looked at the porn magazine and his outspoken comment on the number of investigators. It seems that the more he tried to divert attention away from himself, L gets even more interested in him, though not sure whether he's the suspect.

November 23, 2006 | Weils wrote:

And to the rhetorical question: be quiet and say nothing. The more you draw attention to yourself, the more you get suspected...especially when you say the wrong things instead. For school, teacher can just easily punish all and make the whole class pay for the vase, if no one admits to it. For society and Death Note case, police and L can't punish all of the citizens for not admitting to who is Kira right? ^^

I think I wondered about this when I read the manga, too, though I can't really remember.

Raito's comment about the ICPO, I think, was sort of directed at L, in a "HAHA, YOU'RE WAY TOO EASY TO FIGURE OUT. YOU FAIL AT LIFE, LOL!" way. Raito's zero interest in girls also amuses me, especially here. My inner fangirl went all, "Raito, give it up. You're so gay (for L), it's obvious."

I was thinking about this as well since the entire house is tapped so it's obviously impossible for Light to sneak in the TV into the chips bag while inside the house. So I assume he bought as many potato chips as well as a portable TV. While outside, he opens one of the bags and stuffed the TV inside. He then sealed the bag again (who knows how) before placing the potato chips bag on the cupboard and hope that his mother and sister won't get the one that has the portable TV.

Alternatively, though there is no evidence this occurred from what happened on screen, but is still a way he could have gotten the tv into the bag. With sleight of hand, he could have palmed the lcd screen into the chips while concealing it with his fists.

The reason i venture this, is because him resealing the bag seems very preposterous, i can't even guess how one would do that without machinery.

Actually, the TV was already in there when he opened the bag.

All the stuff you guys said made a lot of sense. Can't seem to remember the thing about the chip flavour, though. I guess I missed it, unless it was mentioned, for some reason, after Chapter 68. Which I still have to read. T_T

and then..., the million dollars question..."How did he do it?"
Well, I live in Mexico, and nowadays I've never seen it with my own eyes, but a few years ago, when I didn't have cable, and at 2:00 a.m. I still hadn't been able to sleep, -well, maybe I just woke up, I don't remember those details-, I saw on TV a handful machine wich I calculated it was 15x10x15 maybe, and its use was precisely to seal normal sandwich bags, and to make them see exactly like one of chips, and it was also tried on an already opened chips bag, and it was perfect, almost like just bought, I didn't see any difference, so..., when I read the chapter, and because of Light's bizarre tastes, I immediatly figured out something like Garten's explanation. The other one also passed through my head, but it seemed unlikely for Light to take such easily findable risk.

and L will suddenly appear on the list of students roster. I will be fun to hear L say: "I am L." right behind Light's back before introducing himself as Ryuzaki. ^^ L's giving Light a headstart, but I wonder if he's so brave or so stupid.

I always had a knack for that- smooth-talking teachers and adminstrators, I mean.

As for the undying mystery of how-the-hell-did-the-portable-tv-got-inside-the-incredulously-even-probably-newly-bought-bag-of-potato-chips, here's my say to it! We all know that Light's got some pretty nimble fingers and that people in the packaging industry have already begun using their brains and are now mass-producing the resealable types of containers. The only thing to it is that there is no way in hell that I could prove if the bag was indeed resealable (it looked like the traditional, aluminum-lined wrapper) and I guess that's the end to it.

As to this episode's impression on me, Light's ability to think of ways of how to get out of a particular tight spot with still being himself is truly surprising, admirable and well, basically, a true show of his genius. Well, there is nothing that one could do against that.
