The opening and ending theme are actually not the kind of music I like to listen to but I suppose they are okay. If I have to choose I think I prefer the ending a bit more. Voice-acting wise, it was weird hearing Miyano Mamoru (Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club) as Yagami Light. I can't help but thinking that this sounds like Tamaki but has the face of Light. Maybe I'll get used to it in subsequent episodes but at the moment I think the voice is a bit off. The animation and character design, on the other hand, is very good, which is expected since Madhouse did another drama based series Monster. Overall, this is an excellent adaptation of the series. I've just updated the images with the high-res version.

The episode begins with a shot of the Shinigami world. A lone Shinigami called Ryuk refuses to join the other Shinigami in their game. Meanwhile in human world, a student called Yagami Light is sitting in a class full of students who aren’t paying attention to the teacher. When he goes home that day, he hears various news reports about crimes and murders, thinking how everyday feels the same to him. Light feels that his world is rotting and the sentiment is echoed by Ryuk in Shinigami world. The next day, Light notices a black book fall from the sky outside the school. When school is over, he decides to find the book and is amused when he sees that the book is called DEATH NOTE. Upon opening the page, he finds a written note stating that "The human whose name is written in this note shall die". Light thinks the book is just a joke but in the end he decides to take it home with him. As he goes through the book he reads the list of instructions on how to use it:

Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot
Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot

The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

  • This Note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their mind when writing his/her name.
Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
  • If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person’s name, it will happen.
  • If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
  • After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Light realises that these rules will allow him to make a person die in comfort or in pain. He, however, doubts that the book is anything more than practical joke. After thinking about it for a while, however, he grabs a pen and prepares to write someone's name in the Death Note. Just as he about to do it, it dawns on him that if the notebook works, he would become a murderer. As Light contemplates the idea, he sees a live news feed about a criminal who is currently holding a bunch of young children hostage. When light sees the face and the name of the murderer, he decides to write the name into the Death Note. As the time goes down to 40 seconds, nothing seems to happen. However, just as he's about to give up on the whole thing, the program receives a breaking news that the children are now released because the criminal has died. Light thinks the entire thing is purely coincidental and decides to go to cram school when his mother reminds him of it.

Light is keen to give the note another try. However, he realises that he can't kill anyone important because then the confirmation of the death might be witheld and he wants an immediate confirmation. Once he arrives inside his classroom, Light entertains the thought of killing a classmate but decides to go against it, thinking that it's safer not to kill someone close to him. Having said that, he thinks he can do without some people in his class. After the class is over, Light walks along the street, thinking how the world will be a better place if some people were to die. When he arrives at a combini, he sees a group of bikers harassing a girl. By chance, Light overhears that the harraser's name is Shibuimaru Takuo. Once he gets inside, Light picks up a Shounen Jump and places his Death Note within it. When the girl is sexually assaulted by the gang, Light writes all Kanji variations of Shibuimaru Takuo next to the word 'accidental death'.

The girl suddenly manages to free herself from the man and runs across the street. The sleazebag, however, is not giving up and decides to give her a chase using his motorbike. When he crosses the street, however, a truck appears and hits the bike head on. Upon seeing this, Light realises that the Death Note in his hand is a genuine article. At the same time, Ryuk is about to leave the Shinigami world, telling other Shinigami that he lost his Death Note. The other Shinigami laughs upon hearing this and points out that Ryuk has two Death Note since he got an additional one from the Shinigami King. Ryuk, however, ignores them and jumps into the portal that takes him to the human world. Back in the human world, Light has return to his house and is immediately greeted by his excited mother. It turns out she wants to know about his position in the nationwide practice exam. She is very pleased upon finding out that Light gets first rank again.

Because of this, she asks Light if there is something that he wants. Light, however, tells his mother that he doesn't want anything. He already has everything that he wants in his hand. Once Light is inside his room, he opens the Death Note and has a good laugh upon seeing the two pages filled with the name of the people he has killed. His happiness, however, comes to a half when he hears a voice from behind him saying that it seems Light likes the book. Light turns around to find the voice and falls off his chair upon seeing a hulking creature inside his room. Ryuk tells Light that he doesn't have to be surprise because he's the Shinigami who lost the Death note. He figures out that Light is aware that the book is not an ordinary one. Light quickly gets himself together and tells Ryuk with straight face that he's not surprised. If anything, he has been waiting for the Shinigami. Light tells Ryuk that he is now aware that "Shinigami's notebook" is real.

Ryuk is amused upon seeing the Death Note and tells Light that he's heard stories about Death Note circulating in the human world but this is the first time he's seen someone using it this much. Upon hearing this, Light calmly tells Ryuk that he's prepared because he knew it's a Shinigami book and yet he used it. Because of this, he asks Ryuk if the Shinigami is going to take his soul. In return, Ryuk wonders what Light is talking about because he's not going to do anything to Light. Light is surprised to hear this so Ryuk tells him that when a Death Note reaches the ground of the human world, it'll become a part of the human world. This means, the notebook belongs to Light now. Ryuk also informs him that if Light wants to, he can give the book to someone else. But in that case, Ryuk will have to erase any knowledge of the Death Note from Light's memory. Upon hearing this, Light asks Ryuk if there is no repercussion from using the Death Note.

Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot
Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot

Ryuk tells Light that there are hardships and terror for those who use it. In addition to this, Ryuk will write Light's name in his own Death Note once Light is dead. Having said that, those who use the Death Note won't be going to either Heaven or Hell. The conversation between the two, however, comes to a halt when Light's mom knock his door. Ryuk assures him that it's okay and tells Light to open the door. It turns out his mother has brought some Apples with her. She also scolds Light when she notices his dark room. Light is surprised to know that his mother can't see Ryuk. After she left, Ryuk explains that since the previous owner of Death Note was him, Light can see and the same thing can be said about hearing him. This is because Death Note is a bond that connects the human Light and the Shinigami Ryuk. Ryuk then grabs one of the Apples and is surprised by its taste, claiming that it's very delicious.

Light wonders why Ryuk chose him but instead of answering the question, Ryuk goofs around, telling Light that the Apple he just had was juicy. After being prodded again, Ryuk admits that he didn't choose Light. He just dropped it and Light happened to be the one who picked it up. This is also the reason as to why Ryuk used English, the most popular language in the human world. Still unsatisfied with Ryuk's answer, Light asks Ryuk why he dropped the note. He doubts that it's by accident because Ryuk went out of his way to write the instruction. Ryuk tells Light that the answer is because he's bored. He explains that in his world, most Shinigamis are either sleeping or gambling. If a Shinigami works hard to fill in his empty Death Note, he'll be laughed at. Since Ryuk can't kill other Shinigami by writing their name in Death Note and writing a human's name while in Shinigami world is not fun, Ryuk decides to come to the human world.

Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot
Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot

When he looks at the Death Note, Ryuk realises that Light has not written the cause of the death of the people that he killed. The only exception to this was the guy who got hit by a truck. Light explains that the good thing about Death Note is that leaving the cause of death blank will give the person a heart attack. Those whose name Light puts down in the notebook are basically criminals. Light's intention is to gradually lower the number of criminals so that people will believe that criminals are being terminated by someone. Light basically wants the world to know that there is someone out there bringing justice to the world. They will know that there is someone doing justice with his judgments. Upon hearing this, Ryuk wonders why Light wants to do something like this so Light tells him that just like Ryuk, he's also bored with his life. He admits that at first he didn't believe it but the Note clearly has a power to make a person to try it.

Light then remembers how back then after killing the sexual harrasser, he felt sick from the thought that he's just become a murderer. At first Light regrets what he's done but after a while, he convinced himself that he's been thinking about this and came to the conclusion that rotten people are better off dead. He started to believe that by using the Death Note, he can change the world. After this, Light started to write the name of various criminals into the Death Note until he filled up the first two pages of the book. He hopes that by doing this, the only ones remaining in this world are those who are kind and honest. Upon hearing this Ryuk points out that when that happens, the only bad person left is Light himself. Light, however, tells Ryuk that he's the most honest person in Japan and believes that he'll become the God of the new world. Ryuk is amused to hear this and tells himself that as he thought, humans are interesting.

Impression:

I almost forgot to mention that Ryuk's VA, Shidou Nakamura (Takumi in Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu) is awesome. Anyone who has seen the film in question will know that he plays a soft-spoken father, a major contrast to his role as the gruff Ryuk. His famous line, which also used frequently in the live-action version of Death Note always left indelible impression on me. The line in question is of course, 「やっぱり...人間っておもしろ!」 (As I thought, humans are interesting). Of course it helps that the character is interesting in the first place. I don't think I can forget the way he obsessively eats Apple. And then there is a serious part of him which makes it hard to guess if he's telling the truth of if he's lying. I personally don't believe that Ryuk went out of his way writing those rules in English language just because he's bored.

Anyway, it's been a while since I last read the manga but the anime pretty much did a good job of reminding me of the storyline. One thing that always intringue me right from the beginning is the world of the Shinigami. I admit that I haven't read the entire manga so I am not aware if the story actually reveals more about that world. However, I've been wondering who are the Shinigami. Are they actually human beings turning into Shinigami or are they entirely different creatures from humans. In addition to this, who set up the rules in Death Note itself. Seeing that Shinigami are generally a bunch of lazy creatures, I doubt that they were the ones who came up with the rules. I realise that this is probably not the story that the writer wanted to emphasise but I always think it would have been interesting to know more about the Shinigami world. And maybe I've forgotten about it but I wonder if the concept of heaven and hell actually exists in Death Note.

Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot
Death Note screenshotDeath Note screenshotDeath Note screenshot

Another thing that has been bothering all along is Ryuk's intention. I've always wanted to know if he purposedly lead Light to use the note. I know that he's bored and wants some entertainment and I think Light provides him with this. However, when I saw this episode, I remember how I used to think that maybe Ryuk has a more sinister intention right from the start. Maybe this is not the time to discuss this since what I am about to mention will not appear in the anime until a few episodes later. Speaking of Ryuk, I always find it amusing that he loves apple so much. It's also a nice reference to the bible's Adam and Eve story where the snake tempts them with the fruit of knowledge. Having said that, I wonder why Apple has been used so frequently as a metaphor for temptation in many fictions. I always wonder if this is because the Fruit of life has always been depicted to look like Apple in both shape and colour.

Moving on to other topic, I'm glad to see Light portrayed as the complex albeit twisted individual that he is. Throughout this episode, it's not difficult to see that his intention is actually good. However, the way he goes about in achieving his ambition ends up making him not too different from the criminals that he claims to hate. In addition to this, he overused the note in a short amount of time instead of picking his battle. And just to play the devil's advocate, do you think it is possible to use the note wisely? For example, do you think the note can be used to help others? Such as in a hostage situation so that the hostages are saved. Or do you think once you use the note you've reached a point of no turning back? Since you have taken someone else's life. How is this any different from judges who sent people on a death sentence? In other words, if you have Death Note in your possession, what would you do with it?

I personally think that no one should have that kind of power. It's like in Jigoku Shoujo. Don't like someone? Type their name in on a website. Write their name in a book. The only difference between the methods is that there's no limit to the people you can condemn using the book. I doubt I would do that much better than Light if the book was in my posession. I honestly doubt that anyone could resist the temptation for long. It's just way too much power for one person to hold.

So, there is something worse/better than hell, but from his comment I assume that there *is* a heaven and hell.

It seems to me that judging by Ryuuku's words (stuff like, "humans are interesting"), the shinigami were not human at one time. They may be totally separate beings.

As for Ryuuku's intention, he told Light that he didn't choose him... he dropped the Death Note randomly and it was by coincidence that Light picked it up.... unless Ryuuku's lying, of course.

I wonder if there would've been any consequence to Ryuuku if the Death Note fell into the hands of a complete idiot or a truly evil person...

There is only a very thin line that seperate good and evil.
While the actions that you do now does not really reflect if you are truly good or evil, right or wrong.
Judgement always come from history and of the future generation that will decide who is right and who is wrong.

Killing will bleed just as saving will bleed as well.
This has always been what Hiko Seijūrō, the master of Himura Kenshin had said,
To save a person, you will still need to kill off the bandits.
While kenshin resolve in killing and use another method of neturalsing his opponent by knocking them out, other type of circustemces does not allowed such an option.

Just as the histoy of China or the warring state of Japan, the leader or the lord who unite the whole of their country, which one of them does not stain their hand in blood?

The people fight for a cause, for an idea of unification.
They fight and they kill and they stain their hands in blood while doing so.

Is this good or evil?

The defination of good or evil does not come in until history came about and the future generation will decide on their means of shelter, their food supply, their safe enviroment, all of these which was fought hard by these lords who after unify the country provided these wellfare.

But as Hiko Seijūrō had also said,
"Sword is a weapon, Kentjusu is the art of killing. No matter how you sugarcoat it, killing is still killing"

When people go to war, they often needed an excuse.
An execuse that people will fight alongside with them.
An execuse for them to kill.

Dr Sun yat-sen fight in the name of revolution and for the republic.
He fought the Qing goverment for better life and wellfare of the people, a better goverment and a goverment that is by the people and for the people.

Dong Zhou during the three kingdom era of ancient China fought using the excuse that the goverment is corrupted.

The rest of the lord fought Dong Zhou for his action of puppeting the emperor who was still a child at that time.

Throughout history, people have been fighting using execues. Execues that will sugarcoat their action.

And Light is of no exception.
He do it for the world, he wanted a world wherethe law can reach everyone.
Where anyone who has done something wrong will be punished.

He will be like the first Emperor of China who rule with an iron rule.
Kira simply can kill whoever he wishes if he decided to do so.
But this will not result in the world that he envisioned.
People will revolt and more people will stand at the side of L.

Kira give the world an option.
The world can choose between good or evil with evil being wipe off by kira.
This in turn will make everyone turn to good.
The world will forget about doing evil acts and more people will stand at the side of kira.

That,
is the execuse that Light will use for his invasion to wipe out the inpurities of this world.

Death note itself is power. It is authority over everyone else.
If the judges does not do his job properly, he will be sacked.
When the evidences are in place, the witness are there, the crimminal is guilty.
What's more does the crowd have to say when the crimminal is being executed?

Just as if Light did not use it properly, he will have no support and everyone will be looking for him.
Before long, Light will be sacked out of this world, executed.

And history will judge who is good and who is bad.
Hitler command people to kill but his is what we all known as a villian.
The allies fought back and they kill as well. Why are they being protrayed as a hero?

Thus, the fine line of good and evil.
Histoy will judged itself.

I haven't read the Manga entirely that's why I'm very excited about this anime since I have heard people complaining about the end; Hopefully the end won't dissappoint me.
The animation is top-notch judging from the opening, as I expected it to be. Such a masterpiece like DeathNote wouldn't be treated badly, I guess. I thought this sort of Manga wouldn't be suited for an anime, since it's not really an action-packed story but mostly consists of thoughts and dialogs. Still I hoped it to be made into an anime.

I don't think I would have the courage to use the death note to kill others, or like Light to "purify the world" with it. At the very beginning when I was reading the Manga I thought that his actions are reasonable, if he only uses it to kill criminals. But as soon as he said he wants to become the god of this new world and begann to kill "people who are in his way", I realized he is just like other criminals, ambitious for power, using killing criminals as an excuse.

I thought of what Yuuko from xxxHolic once said about killing others. (chapter 1) Even she with so much power couldn't bear the burden of killing someone. It seems that Light was sacrificing himself for the sake of the world, but later on he seems to enjoy this more and more.

Furthermore in my opinion nobody should have power (..like I can kill someone whenever I want to) over another's life, whatever one has done. (to imprison someone is not the same as to take somebody's life...)

In short, his outset(basic thoughts?) was right, but turnes out badly.

however there is so many crimes in the world with so many people whose face we don't see that it can't be helped, and there is too the possibility that the person who we thought was guilty is catually the innocent and the real guilty is left free.
I think now thgat before using it we should do 3 things:

1 calm ourselves and think the things deeply and coldly without any emotions on the way so: 100% logical

2 investigate EVERYTHING so that when we give our fall it would be the nearest to the utopic 'juste' desicion

3 don't get too involved and don't get too blinded by the power, I mean if the power takes control you wil become something worse than the normal criminals, and if you use it without responsability you're not better than them...

After watching the raw, I remembered why I got so into the manga in the first place (as in, to read the whole thing up to where the scanlation stopped, I finished it, I think in 4 days.). But then I also remembered how DN's thinking power 'jumped the shark', and it just felt dragged out and repetitive, and the word balloons took up 99.9% of the page of L and Raito theorizing. Ya, jumped the shark...

But the manga's first intentions were good, showing "absolute power corrupts absolutly" and whatnot. In such that the 'enemy' or the 'badguy' never believes he's bad, that what he's doing is in the right intention. I think if the author kept this theory going, but in a different direction, there probably wouldn't have been repetitive actions in the middle of the plot.

Just watch the first episode. My expression was like WTF?! O_o

No offense against Miyano-san or anything since I also like his voice as Tamaki but am I the only one who find that the seiyuu's voice is not suited for Light Yagami's character?

It could be because I watch too much Ouran but I expected Light's voice to be a bit more dark and not too deep. Miyano's voice is just too, no matter how I look at it, cheerful. Aside from that, Maaya did a good job on Haruhi by deepening her voice from the Lunamaria Hawke of GSD to Haruhi Fujioka of OHSHC.

Oh well, I just hope I'll get use to it soon enough. Or else my impression on Death Note will decrease by a few points but not too much to have lost interest in the series. :)

October 5, 2006 | Garten wrote:

I'm actually surprised that many people have such positive reaction to his voice. Just like you, I like his role as Tamaki but the voice that he uses in Death Note is a bit too close to Tamaki and I don't think it's appropriate. I was half-expecting him to go "Bravo, Ryuk! Mon Ami, Mon Ami" (Heh, I suddenly gets a vision of Tamaki glomping Ryuk and I think that is one hilarious image). XD

And I'd like to think that it's not because I watch Ouran too often. I often forget that Mayama (from Honey and Clover) and Kyon (from Suzumiya Haruhi) are voiced by the same VA, Tomokazu Sugita. I think that suggests Sugita tries to gives different voice to different character. Having said that, a few VAs only have two or three repertoire in their voice acting so maybe I'm a bit harsh here.

Wow. I haven't read the manga version of Death Note, and the anime is a good time to jump in and learn more about the story. Ryuk and Light's VA are good, although I don't feel some of the negative responses about their tone of voices. Perhaps because I never seen Ouran Host Club. :)

The OP and ED has a real dark tone to them, which is good. Nightmare is a goth band from Japan is that right? I like the ED animations most, showing Light seemingly normal like any high school student but then reveals his sinister personality through mirror images, complete with red coloured skies and crows.

Only one word to describe Death Note: it's great. The storyline starts to get complex right from the beginning but with L's appearance from next episode onwards sure is going to bring up the tension. Let the battle of wits between the two geniuses begin!

I'm guessing that Miyano Mamoru will slowly adapt his voice as Raito's character changes. I always imagined the early Raito to have an optimistic, slightly naive type of voice. October 5, 2006 | Len wrote:

That's probably true. Light also looked pretty innocent on this Ep, probably to help contrast the later scenes, like what the manga did.

One thing that did bother me, and I'm sorry since the show was otherwise perfect (I also know this is really weird of me) but I really did miss the the prologue from the manga before we even meet Light. You know, with the other guy who decided not to use his book? I actually decided to give Death Note a chance because I liked that opening.

October 5, 2006 | kyon wrote:

Ever since I heard Death Note was going to be adapted into an anime, I have been wondering how it would turn out. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the first episode. I thought it was really good.

I really appreciated the thought that went into the direction of the series. It foreshadowed many things and fitted many things together visually. The opening and many of the scenes complemented the dialogue-heavy nature of the show very well, I thought.

In fact, I was so glad that Madhouse delivered above my expectations that I decided to type up an impromptu visual analysis of the episode online, haha. And at 4am in the morning at that! Was absolutely whacked out in class the next day, but felt it was quite worth it :P

Anyway, I think it is a fact that you will have overstepped a boundary once you use the book. As Light does, you might compare it to a chain letter. You believe in the power of the chain letter, so you pass it on. Similarly, it's likely that you'll believe in the power of the notebook and not use it out of fear.

Even in the case of using it for good, for example saving the hostages, it might be that other even more disasterous events will happen because those hostages were saved.

As for the law, the difference between Light's actions and that of a judge is that Light decides everything himself. There is no chance for the person once Light passes judgement on him, whereas in the court of law, there is at least a system in place to decide, and at least a chance to turn over a new leaf.

Anyway, I hope the series keeps up with the quality, and keep up the good work on your site! Really liked your Honey & Clover stuff :)

The screencaps do look very nice! Bit dark, but that does fit the DNstyle =)
About Light's voice: I don't really think about Tamaki when I hear it. The voice sounds a lot more like Miyano Mamoru's voice for Kiba (from Wolf's Rain), a serious voice, and not the happy Tamaki-voice. Also, this afternoon I finished Ouran and I was kinda happy to hear Tamaki's voice in DN! Must say I'm very curious to hear L's voice~ ~

I think DN probably has the best animation I've seen so far this season... Madhouse main team is fabulous! The OP theme is a nightmare itself ^_^;; but that's actually a good thing coz it gives me an extra feast just watching the variety of OP with the same animation. My favorite is actually this animation against "I can't be cool" (Kanno Yoko).

As you said, Miyano Mamoru is not ready for Kira. His voice is right but his acting... it's too cheesy for Kira. He sounds more like just a "normal" high school ... not the one with the cells that will enable him to be the "GOD" in his new world... his laughter's a bit weird too (honest). I'm sweating to hear how Hirano transforms from Haruhi to Misa... hope it's not Tamaki and Haruhi we're hearing. I also fear hearing Ranma and Inuyasha as L ^_^;; but it's Kappei san so at least his acting experience should save the day.

Set aside from the cast... I suppose the plot is reasonably paced but it could get better ... anyway I have hopes for this anime (as many others this season don't seem to be as attractive as they initially looked).

Honestly, I don't think I'd be able to use it.

It's not that I don't believe in death as a form of justice--I mean, we just don't know if we're capable until (or, if ever) such a situation would arise.

But capable or not, right or wrong. I don't think we're the ones who should choose that. As humans, I don't think we're big, or sure enough for that.

We're completely lost, and always searching. I don't think we know a thing about anything.

So then, death would be too great a thing for us to really hold power over, in complete sureness.

And even so, there are always going to be moral ambiguities. What about mercy killing, or whatever?

I don't know. Maybe in the same sense, when we save people in hospitals and such delights, maybe that as well is a play over death--playing with death. In that case, wouldn't that be wrong as well. Wouldnt we be making decisions we're not big enough for?

But how do you let somebody die, when you could save them?

But maybe that's the difference. To save a life, you're making the decision for one person. To kill (for justice), your doing it to save others from suffering, choosing one over the other. Maybe that's we're the problem is, we can't judge one--end one so another may live, or not suffer.

Maybe that's what we're not big enough for. The choice between lives, and their worth.

"Let he who is free of sin, cast the first stone...", and all that bible-jazz.

So no, I wouldn't use the book. I'd wuss out, and burn it.
