This is one of those transition episode that doesn't give much twist but simply lets the viewers to catch up with what's been happening thus far. The episode does promise future character development and what looks like a possible future reconciliation between Lelouch and Suzaku. I think the only mystery that is still unsolved at the moment is the whereabouts of Marianne (if she's still alive), why C.C can still communicate with her, and Anya's true identity. This episode also suggests that war is imminent. I don't think the Emperor will let go the countries that he's conquered so easily and it seems he's willing to lay waste his men as long as Lelouch doesn't win. Anyway, I'm sorry for the short summary for this week's episode but I'm a bit tired today. I tried to add in some large images to go with the highlights instead.

Episode 16

Continuing from the previous episode, few select Britannian soldiers and Royal families are finally aware of the Emperor's disappearance. Lelouch seems to be happy to see this, thinking that the Emperor get left behind in that world. He, however, has a problem with C.C, whose memory has been reset to the time when she was still a slave. As a result, she's extremely terrified of Lelouch that he has to assure her that he won't be mean to her. Their conversation is interrupted when Jeremiah informs him that he's captured Cornelia. Jeremiah apologizes for not killing her but he can't find himself killing a Royal family members. Lelouch understands this and tells the guy that he's done well. As for Cornelia, it seems she's aware that Lelouch has Geass and wants to know what he seeks with the power. She can't believe it when he tells her that he just wants to save his sister. Back in Black Knight's HQ, Asahina becomes suspicious when there are traces of blood in their frame's claws but Rolo is quick to point out that the mission is not to be discussed amongst the Black Knight.

At the same time, Kallen decides to unleash her anger towards Suzaku by punching him to oblivion. She even urged him to kill her and when he refuses, she flat out tells the guy how much she hates him. At the same time, Zero announces the formation of a large alliance of states on par with Britannia to the representatives of different countries. The name is the United Federations of Nations. They stressed the importance of forming the alliance before Britannia finds out about it. Later on, Lelouch returns to his room to bring Pizza for C.C, who not surprisingly is excited about it even though she can't remember anything else. Meanwhile, Suzaku is being melancholy, questioning the decision that he made 8 years ago. Anya, who's nearby finds it hard to believe that he believe in himself 8 years ago. She points out that people's memories are vague and not worth believing in. She also gives an example about how she has a diary written 9 years ago but she has no memory of it. Anya believes there are many of her written records which do not match with her memories.

Suzaku wonders if this is the work of the Emperor but their conversation is interrupted by Lord Brandli, the Knight of Ten, who clearly dislikes Suzaku. Before the two can get into a fight, however, Knight of One, Lord Walstein, orders them to not to mix up their enemy. It seems he believes that if the Black Knight were to invade, they will invade this place, Luciano. Because of this he's prepared Valkyria and Gareths frames to counter the attack. Later on, Brandli makes a visit to antagonize Kallen as well but he's interrupted by Gino, who doesn't get along with this douchebag either. Back in the lab, Lloyd plans on attaching Freya on Lancelot. They wanted him to use Guren but it seems Cecile tinkered with it too much and now no one can use it. While they talk, Nina expressed her interest on mounting her nuclear device on Lancelot but everyone is against the crazy gal. At the same time, the United Federations of Nations are having their ratification ceremony, which is aired by major TV stations. The Black Knights are having a field day preparing for this.

Chiba tells Toudou that she wants to tell him something once everything is over while Ougi makes a surprise last minute appearance, looking okay depite his previous incident. The ratification ceremony then starts and Milly explains how this means that the United Nations will have equal power to Britannia since the fractured EU will also join in. In the ceremony, an announcer announces that 47 countries have completed the ratification of the UN charter. Soon, Britannia finds out about it but they think the armies will be scattered. Much to their shock, the countries agrees to resign their military power. In their stead, the Black Knight, which is not affliated to any country, will agree to defend them in exchange for continued power and support for the United Federation of Nations. If an action were to be taken by the Black Knight, all members must agree to it. Kaguya then asks the members if they agree to take an action against the occupation of Japan. After all members stand up, Kaguya asks the Black Knight to liberate Japan.

Zero agrees to make this their first resolution but much to his horror, the Emperor suddenly appears on the screen. The Emperor challenges Zero to try and take over and see if he'll win everything or lose all. Soon "All Hail Britannia" and "Nippon Banzai" chants clash over each other, suggesting that war is imminent. Meanwhile, Lelouch is distraught that the Emperor is still alive because it means he needs to save Nunnally soon. He becomes angry when C.C tries to offer him pizza that he breaks the plate, and accidentally hurt her. He quickly apologizes for his action but C.C claims that this is nothing in comparison to what she usually received. Lelouch is shattered upon hearing this, causing C.C to put her hands on top of his. He wonders what C.C does when she's painful on the inside. C.C tells him that she wishes she has friends. Upon hearing this, Lelouch gets an idea to ask Suzaku for his help to save Nunnally. Suzaku, however, asks first if Lelouch is Zero and Lelouch confirms this but he begs Suzaku to save Nunnally. Suzaku agrees on one condition: that the two meet at Kururugi Shrine.

Highlights

Code Geass R2 screenshot

Lately I've been wondering if the writers actually sneak into forums and message boards and read what the viewers have said about the character, particularly Suzaku. From time to time, it seems like the show is 'answering' the viewers who want certain things to happen. For example, many viewers clearly do not like Suzaku and have a desire to punch him. Well now they got their wish via Kallen, who gets to bitch-slap Suzaku up and down as a revenge. It's kind of nice as well to know that after begging for her life last episode ago, she's suddenly becomes empowered and decides to beat him up.

Code Geass R2 screenshot

C.C loves her Pizza. It's her one true love. I don't think I've ever seen anyone blushing over food except her. What I want to know is why Pizza? And where did she get her first taste of it. My memory is bad as usual and I can't remember if she was ever in Italia or some place like that. Or did she get her first taste of Pizza while in the USA? At any rate, that Pizza shown in this episode looks like the Sausage Roll Pizza that they sell in Japan.

Code Geass R2 screenshot

It's great to see that someone is getting the happy end....so far. Milly seems to have climbed the corporate ladder at the TV station from being a weather woman to now hosting morning shows and what looks like a children's program. Maybe her next job involves a guest role in SMAP X SMAP?

Code Geass R2 screenshot

As it turns out Anya has lost her memories, causing Suzaku to wonder if the Emperor has modified her memory. That's fine and all as long as she doesn't turn out to be a clone of Marianne with different bodies located in a tank and that her purpose is to set off the next progression of mankind by turning all of us into one giant white light. She's probably the only character that even if I want to do some wild guessing, I can't guess her background. Maybe it's because there's so little that we know of her thus far.

Code Geass R2 screenshot

So it looks like Tamaki can't even be a betrayer properly since he's too busy getting drunk and getting too close with a fellow Black Knight (I think it's Asahina but I can't remember anyone from that group apart Chiba). Speaking of betrayal-ton, I think that task is going to fall onto Ougi, who can be seen looking perfectly healthy despite his fall on last week's episode. I kind of wish we saw what happened between him being protected from his fall by "Chigusa" to the point where he is now.

Code Geass R2 screenshot

The relationship between Chiba and Toudou came out of nowhere. A few weeks ago it looks like the two were sleeping in the same room so people ended up assuming that there's something going on between the two. This week kind of confirms it with Chiba saying that once the whole thing is over, she wants to talk to Toudou about something. Toudou looks scared though. Maybe he's not ready for any kind of commitment?

Code Geass R2 screenshot

These group looks like a bunch of lawyers about to serve the cease and desist order to their victim. Come to think of it, I have no idea why Sayoko is so loyal to Lelouch and Nunnally. Lelouch also seems to trust her a lot as well to the point of exposing himself to her before he does so to other members of the Black Knights.

Code Geass R2 screenshot

This is a nice-looking attempt at euphemism from the writers to describe how bloody an attempt to coup the King's position can be. When all is said and done, how many friends will Lelouch still have next to him? I really hope that he can at least protect those people who he considers 'important' to him. This includes but not limited to: Nunnally, C.C, and Kallen. I'm starting to wonder if Suzaku should be included in that equation as well considering the end of this episode but let's see what happens on next week's episode first.

Impression

It looks like things start to fall apart a little bit for Lelouch. I'm not sure if Cornelia knowing that Zero is Lelouch is a good thing but I suppose sooner or later she'll find out about it. I am not surprised she thinks that Zero's claim of wanting to save his sister to be laughable considering he basically killed Euphemia. The thing is, can Lelouch raise to power without killing his royal family brothers/sisters (apart from Nunnaly, that is)? The thing is if he kills them, I doubt Nunnally will like it and if he doesn't kill them, would they accept the fact that he's the one who's been conspiring against their country and their father? Meanwhile, there's a clear discontent amongst members of the Black Knight who start to wonder about Zero's personal mission. Asahina has now been added to the list of people who are suspicious of his intention. With Ougi now returning to the Black Knight's side as if nothing happened, one has to wonder how deep is the crack within the Black Knight as an organization. It's a good thing that Kallen is not in the organization at the moment because the last thing Lelouch needs is for her to lose faith in him.

As for Suzaku, it seems he starts to question the decision he made 8 years ago, which is probably the decision to kill his father so that the war will end. Anya was right in saying that she can't believe anyone would trust their memories and judgment from a long time ago. Back then Suzaku was just a kid so any decision he made could be because he was afraid of war and want it to end. No one likes war but it wasn't something that should be decided lightly. Interestingly enough, there seems to be a major division in the ranks of Knight of Rounds as well. Suzaku, Anya, and Gino clearly don't get along with the other members of Knight of Rounds. Anya's memory lost is interesting especially since she has a picture of Lelouch in her diary, which suggests that she probably knows something about him. It's interesting that in the end Lelouch has no one else to rely but Suzaku and has to learn to trust the guy again in order to save Nunnally. I can't help but wonder, however, if Suzaku's invitation to Lelouch is a trap or if he just wants to recall where everything went wrong.

I've kind of come up with the semi random idea that the reason why Anya's memory might have been erased by the Emperor is because she knows, and is possibly responsible for, the assassination of Marianne.

Regarding Anya's past, in the novels, Anya serves as Nunnally's knight. She demonstrates an unusual familiarity with the deceased Empress Marianne, able to find her way through Marianne's home despite it having been sealed off after her assassination. She cries for no apparent reason when piloting the Ganymede.

Meh. I didn't like this episode. It feels like the writers are trying to stretch out the material as long as they can before they drop us into the war situation. And oh, poor Suzaku (not really) but despite his efforts, Area 11 becomes a war zone again.

I like that the series is slowly redeems Lelouch and Suzaku. They both are regaining whatever humanity lost in their attempt to win their ideals.

Anya will probably turn out to be some long lost sister of Lelouch. Maybe Marianne had another child with another man? That's why the Emperor was jealous?

It was so satisfying seeing Suzaku punched by Kallen. Although honestly, as far as prisoner goes, she gets a royal treatment thanks to her relationship to Nunnally and Suzaku.

I thought Lord vampire whats his name suddenly going around to look for Kallen was strange. It's like they want to introduce this new character so they just shoved him into a scene regardless how weird it'll be. Gino is a nice guy though so I'd like to see him survive this.

In the end, there are only several possibilities for the ending:

1. Happily ever after. Somehow Lulu manages to kill all of his enemy, maybe fix his friendship with Suzaku, and establish free nations.

2. Lulu wins but lost everything important to him. I fear for this ending but it's very likely.

3. The emperor wins and Black Knight and all other countries are finally dominated by Britannia. Sunrise will get killed if they go for this ending.

4. Some weird ending that will cause everyone to talk about it for eternity.

I really think this episode provided some good setup. It should be an interesting ride to the end of the season.

Here are a couple of things I took away from this episode along with thoughts on it.

1) Susaku was suppose to take over control of the Guren. But the modifications made it so that no one can pilot it. Very interesting in that Lloyd pretty much recognized the Guren as a quality machine (rather he believes it can beat his Lancelot or not, who can say).

2) Notice Toudou watching Zero back away has the Emperor spoke. I think he suspects something as well. Whether or not he remains loyal is something we will have to see, but I don't think Toudou is a fool.

3) I too believe that Anya will have a very big role in the end game of this show. Her background is mysterious and the fact that they made a point to mention her memories and dairy not matching up leads me to believe that even she questions her past.

4) Nina wanting to load her new toy on Lancelot seems to me like a back-handed way to test Susaku. I mean she asks him as plan as day if he considers himself an Eleven (Japanese). Its not enough she made a WMD, she wants Susaku to use it against his own countrymen.

5) Speaking of Susaku, I think he is approaching the crossroad. I really want to believe that what he has been doing is due to some misguided oath he made 8 years ago, but that events are causing him to rethink things.

Mo, I think it's the real Ogi, as Sayako's seen with Rollo's little Lawyer group. He's probably being blackmailed.
I probably don't need to say this, but watching Kallen beat up Suzaku was priceless, I could stand to watch it a few more times.

Best part was Kallen kicking Suzaku's ass.

I'm guessing the ending will lead to a free world, but I have a feeling that Lelouch will die at the very end finally knowing what happened to his mother. The sad part will be Nunnally finding out that he's Zero. But before the ending will come, the Black Knight are most likely going to a chaos because of the event in episode 14. They're showing that there will be a crack on the Black Knight with Ougi and Asahina. Also I'm predicting a betrayal in the Britainnia Empire and I don't mean by Suzaku.

I'm hoping that there will be a battle between Schneizel and Leouch. Two genius!!!

Also i wonder how important Anya is to Code Geass. It clearly show she has knowledge of Lelouch and maybe even Marianne.

I love Gino's part in this episode. Even though it wasn't much.

P.S. Nina must really die. Who agree with me?

Although most people enjoy the scene where Kallen beats Suzaku up because they love hating this child, I find it the most comforting that it means he's recovering from his Euphie/Shirley driven insanity. However, I have no hope at all that Suzaku will reconcile with Lelouch.

The producers are out to make Suzaku's life miserable. Justified in the story by his masochism, justified in production because of fan hate, seen in his bouts of attempts at deplorable acts and the actual backlash, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has to tote Freya around despite Lloyd's interference.

It also appears that the producers have completely forgotten about his thinking that he must ask Lelouch why he killed Euphemia...in the preview he just seems to thrust the memento in Lulu's face angrily, which doesn't really indicate to me that he's openminded. I made this prediction since the new OP, however, because in it he is not part of the happy gang that sprouts out towards the end of the song.

In any case, since Suzaku's going to have bad end, I'd like to wait and see how twisted Lelouch's will be

BTW Chiba basically guaranteed that the law of 'telling someone you have something to tell them after the battle is over in war movies law'. In other words, either her or Toudo (most likely her as she's a minor character) will die next episode. The only question is, will she die for real (shirley) or not? Since she's a minor character, I'm going for yes die for real.

I could be wrong but I remember being weirded out by it because some of her conversation with Marianne is very interactive (ie. it requires her to pause waiting for answer from Marianne, etc). At least I hope so. It's kind of sad to think C.C is one of those people who talk to themselves. Damn, she must be really lonely. -_-;;

No idea how that would work, though. At very least, I think they are going to put aside some of their differences, since they clearly do care about each other still, despite everything.

And then probably Suzaku will die. I think one of them has to at least and I'd put more money on Lelouch being the survivor.

Lelouch for example, and even Suzaku, but with him she needed more force...

for C.C.'s talking, im thinking that she has the ability to talk Marianne like over a phone, cept there's a time lag or delay or something. so basically C.C. is talking to Marianne when she's still alive like 10-20 years ago. if my guess is right, Marianne would've known she'll be killed or maybe that's why she "planned" her death. (remember she purposely release the guards on the day of her death?)

1,maybe she's Marianne with immortal without memories thanks to the king

Intentionally hold back the information so it could be the force to drive her son, something like that. Anyway I don't think Lelouch knows of C.C.'s relationship with Marianne. So far what C.C. has revealed to Lelouch is only that she had been to/seen Aries Villa before. That could mean many more things aside that she knows Marianne personally. Not to mention that she can even actually talk to the dead Marianne herself (No, I don't doubt C.C.'s ability to talk with Marianne since like Garten said, it looks really interactive and Charles can also do the same, talking to Clovis)

Nunnally is what both driving him forward and dragging him backward. I feel so sorry for Lelouch that even though he is the leader of a super army now, saving one little girl who is the most important person in his life is still something he is unable to do. It's quite ironic.. Who would think the mighty Zero also has his own problem, the one so grave to the point that it makes him cry, with zero person that can help him....

I would want him to start trusting his comrades/subordiates by revealing his identity, tell them his problem and ask for their help. His prince status can be the problem but I believe he would have Kaguya's backup. Tell her privately then go for an official announcement within the OoBK later. But it's too late for that now as he already made the decision to ask for Suzaku's help, and I can't help feeling regretful.
