OP Theme: 「O2」by ORANGE RANGE - AVI version (22.6MB) | PSP version (16.9MB)

This is a pretty nice start for the sequel, I suppose. It's like a replay of the first series' first episode albeit in different kind of situation. In a lot of way, the storytelling method reminds me of several US TV series I can think at the back of my head. The biggest revelation here is that Lelouch has lost his memory after the incident that took place in the island. The second season also features a bunch of new characters which I assume will either support Lelouch's cause or Suzaku's. As for the OP/ED, I kind of like the ED theme but I thought the OP is a bit bland in comparison to the first series' 1st OP, Colors. The montage of images created by CLAMP for the ED is fantastic and makes me miss CLAMP's old series, X and Clover. I just feel that lately I haven't seen something from them which has a lot of meaning like those two titles I mentioned before.

Previously on Code Geass: when Japan was overtaken by Britannia empire, it ends up being called Area 11. A figure called Zero appeared to lead the Black Knights against the empire but they were defeated. Zero's death is recorded in history. Fast forward to the year of 2018, C.C gets the permission to fly a Zeppelin-like airplane for the purpose of advertising Britannia Farm. But the truth is, they are on their way to launch a mission called Flying Swallow No.4. Inside the school, Lelouch is running away from Villetta, the PE teacher. Villetta tries to give him a chase to force him to attend her class but he enters a science lab instead and drops a liquid from a vial into a petri dish. This turns the liquid into some kind of pink gas, which is harmless but gives Lelouch space to evade capture. On his way downstairs, he meets Milly, who throws him a baguette and wishes him the best. Because of this, she gets scolded by Villetta because she's supposed to be the student council president. Villetta changes plan when he sees Lelouch running outside. She jumps out of a window thinking that she finally catch Lelouch. However, she quickly realizes that the guy that she caught is Rivalz wearing black wig. Lelouch himself has managed to escape by riding the side of Rivalz' motorbike. The driver, however, is not Rivalz but his brother, Rollo Lamperouge.

Later on, Rollo reminds Lelouch that the reason Villetta always chasing after him is because he always skip classes. Lelouch claims that he can't help it because they bore him. Lelouch then narrates about how it's almost a year since Zero caused the Black Rebellion. Area 11 has calmed down since then so he and his brother are thinking of going back to Britannia mainland. On television, Government General Carares declares that the shooting of the Elevens are not discrimination but a differentiation. He claims that the Elevens were tricked by Zero to regain their Japanese name so they are now considered as dangerous race who must be re-educated. Lelouch thinks about how the Elevens lost because they were not strong enough. If they didn't act up, they would have been spared from this re-education. He also thinks that Zero is a fool because no matter what he does, the world is still the same. At the same time, Careras is informed that construction inside the Babel tower is underway. Careras has no idea what the emperor want with this since the remnants of Black Knights are not powerful and Zero is already dead. Unknown to Lelouch, he's been observed by a group of Britannia soldiers who wonder if 'she' will come this time around. The commander thinks that they are taking a risk by going outside of the settlement area.

Inside the building, Rollo wonders why Lelouch does this (skipping class, gambling), because it's not like he needs the money. Lelouch claims that he just want to find strong opponent. Lelouch, however, quietly remarks the truth is, this is just a way to kill his boredom. Inside the place, they see two Eleven brothers fighting against each other. Lelouch remarks about how the Elevens lost twice. Once with Prime Minister Kururugi and the other time with Zero. It's at this point that he bumps into a bunny girl who is none other than Karen. Karen immediately apologizes even though Lelouch doesn't mind. She explains that she's just Eleven while he's a Britannian student. Lelouch tells her that he doesn't like flaunting off his status but Karen tells him that those without power have to endure it. In response Lelouch tells her that he wishes they don't push their values on him. Karen then tries to put a transmitter onto Lelouch's pocket but before she manages to do so, she gets yanked by a Britannian who's on a 'bunny' hunt. Karen claims that she's not for sale but the guy ignores her. Lelouch dislikes the guy's arrogance so he challenges the guy to a chess duel. Rollo panics since the guy comes from Mafia background but Lelouch goes on with the challenge regardless.

Inside a prison, Tamaki is beaten up by the guard and mutters about how if Zero is still here, they wouldn't be able to do this. Nagisa is unimpressed and asks him not to talk about that traitor. Tamaki refuses to believe this ditto with Ougi but Nagisa doesn't think highly of Zero because as a commander, he disappeared during the final battle. Toudou cuts the two of them off by reminding them that Zero is dead. At the same time, Lelouch checkmates his opponent. The guy becomes angry, claiming that Lelouch cheats during the game. Karen and Rollo protest because it's impossible for someone to cheat in a chess game but the man orders his guards to restrain Zero so they can create 'evidence'. All of a sudden, there is an attack from outside the building. Karen uses the opportunity to smack the hell out of the man and runs away with Lelouch. Meanwhile, Careras is in the middle of greeting the Chinese Federation's representative and his bodyguard, Li Xingke. The Britannian army wants Li to take off his sword but Li refuses and slices their gun belt instead. He tells Careras that he believes it's too early for Britannia to understand the Chinese Federation. Careras is unhappy to hear this but he quickly got distracted when he hears noises coming from the direction of Babel Tower.

Back inside the tower, Karen loses her grip on Lelouch, allowing Rollo to swoop in and runs away with his brother. Lelouch and Rollo tries to escape out of the entrance but before they can do that, a Knightmare Frame called Burain is in their way. Instead of harming them, however, Burain extends its hand towards Lelouch and even protect them when the Britannian army Sutherland Frames start shooting at them. At the same time, Karen apologizes for losing Lelouch but the others tell her not to worry since Urabe and the others are looking for him. Karen then uses a remote control which activates her Guren Nishiki and proceeds to ride the Frame. While attempting to protect Rollo from a gunman's gun, Lelouch ends up falling off a ledge. Rollo tries to grab his hand but is unable to do so (or rather, it looks like he doesn't make a good enough effort to grasp Lelouch's hand). Back at school, Shirley bitches about how Lelouch drags Rollo into this mess but Milly and Rivalz remind her that she's just worried about Lulu. Shirley tries to deny it but she's blushing regardless. As for Lelouch, he's save despite his fall but he panics upon thinking that he might not be able to save Rollo. When he tries to go up again, he finds himself in an area where there are a lot of dead bodies.

At first Lelouch thinks that the terrorists did the killings until he saw the bodies of dead Elevens as well. He then comes face to face with Burain again and from within it, C.C comes out. She tells him that she's his ally and his real enemy is Britannia. C.C reminds him that they made a contract and she knows the real him. Before Lelouch can come to her, however, there's a gunshot and C.C falls to the ground. Thankfully, Lelouch manages to catch her body. Out of nowhere comes Britannian soldiers carrying flame thrower to burn the bodies of the dead people even though some of them are just severely injured. The commander then comes forward and tells Lelouch that they've been observing him for a while now. He then starts listing the things that Lelouch did today by reading a "Lelouch Activity Log". He tells Lelouch that this is all a bait so that they can force C.C to come out. He then orders his soldiers to shoot Lelouch on spot so there won't be any witness. Lelouch becomes angry and thinks to himself about how if he has power, he can fight the world. Suddenly C.C awakes and kiss him on the mouth. Through her power, she tells him that if it's power that he wants, he already has it. It's just sealed within him. Because of this, she urges him to remember who he really is. The power of the King.

Lelouch finally realizes that the discontent that he feels all of this time is because he sensed that he's actually...Zero. A flashback then shows that Suzaku told Lelouch that he didn't expect Lelouch to forgive him. After all, they are friends. Pissed off with Suzaku's answer, Lelouch stands up and walks towards the army, who's already terrified because C.C is still not dead. Lelouch asks them if being powerless means evil then does having power means justice. I really have no idea what he meant by that. The commander claims that there's no evil or justice. The only thing that exists is for the bait to die. In response, Lelouch unleashes his geass on the soldiers and tells them to die on his name. Lelouch tells himself about how since that day, he felt that something was wrong. It's like he has a fake life planted inside of him. But now he understands that he wasn't wrong. It's the world that's wrong. As soon as he said this, Karen inside Guren Nishiki and Urabe inside his Gekka drop off from the ceiling. They claim that they've been waiting and asks him for his order. At the same time, the Emperor of Britannia appear in front of Zino, Suzaku, and Anya. Suzaku assures the Emperor that he'll still be the one who kills Zero.

Impression:

As I thought, Lulu actually just forgot his memory. Otherwise, why on Earth would he not worried about Nunnaly's whereabouts/safety? My guess is after the event in episode 25, Suzaku defeated him by using his own power and wiped his memory? I also wonder if this means that Rollo is just a plant placed to supervise Lelouch, who's been mind-wiped. Anyone want to guess what happened back then in that Island? My guess is that Suzaku shot him and he lost consciousness, allowing either Suzaku to use his geass (assuming he has one) or V.V to do the job himself. He then gets planted back to the school because they still haven't been able to kill C.C. The question is, why do they want to kill C.C? And is it even possible to kill her? As for Rollo, my guess is that he really is one of Lelouch's 'brothers' (this family have so many kids after all). Maybe he starts liking Lelouch as a brother after a while but I could be wrong. Villetta seems to be backup support for Rollo because the idea of her quitting army to become a teacher is unlikely.

As for Suzaku, does anyone still think that he is working for the good of the Elevens? Even after the Elevens are turned to slaves by Britannia empire? What's his excuse for putting his own people in this kind of situation? I guess he's an example of someone who lost sight of his goal due to circumstance (Euphemia's death). I don't think he can go on with his plan of changing Britannia from within while the Elevens are being brutally treated by Britannia. I guess his mind snapped when Euphemia died. Moving on, it's good to know that Diethard and Laksharta managed to elude capture back in episode 25. It shows that Britannia is lousy when it comes to security. They seriously believed that a bunch of army would be enough to defeat C.C and Guren Nishiki, which happens to be equal in power to Suzaku's Knightmare Frame back then. Speaking of Guren Nishiki, I'm surprised that Karen still regards Lelouch highly despite what happened at the end of episode 25. Considering her hatred for Britannians, it surprised me that she still wants to help Zero to achieve his goal.

Moving on to peripheral stuffs, the OP is not that impressive and looks too much like the previous OPs. I'm not too fond of the song either. Having said that, it does feature a lot of interesting tidbits like new characters, some hidden ones (Orange-kun?), possible future plot (Ougi/Villetta). The ED montage, on the other hand, is fantastic because it features CLAMP's drawings. It actually reminds me a bit of X TV series for some reason. Maybe it's the devil/angel wings. I am still not sure about the song though but in general, it's better than the OP. Overall, it was an okay episode but because I've seen other series with this kind of plot device (amnesia), it was easy to guess as to what happened back then. As a side note, I wish the show would just use Romaji instead of Katakana to write characters' name so there's no confusion in guessing their name. For example, should 「ジノ」 be spelled as "Gino" (the closest phonetic sound of that name) or "Zino" (Apparently official spelling but how did that happen?). I also feel stupid for not realising sooner that C.C's is an abbreviation of Shi Tsu, which sounds better because it makes more sense that it's abbreviated that way. I just think it sounds more like a proper Chinese name as opposed to Shitsu (where the two words are combined together).

Ooh, good point. I always take Widescreen for granted that I didn't realise that the first season was in Pan/Scan *yuck*.

Is this really HD or just upconverted though?

This episode looks interesting too. I can't wait until it's subbed.

I don't like Rollo. He looks suspicious. How can everyone suddenly think it's natural that Lulu has younger brother?

Good job, Suzaku! Now your people are in a worse place than they used to be. Some defender of Japanese you are.

Rollo... every time I look at him, I can't shake the feeling that he and Nunnally are the same person. I guess it's the purple eyes... and their picture together in the ed.

Btw Garten, when you said Suzaku used "his own power" to defeat Lelouch and wipe him of his memory, did you mean Lelouch's Geass or not? Because if it is Lelouch's Geass you're referring to, I'll have to say you're wrong since one of the condition of Geass is that it can only be used once on a person. If you can remember, he used Geass on himself during the time when he fought against Mao. Of course, my bashing only holds true if you were referring to Lelouch's Geass when you said Suzaku used "his own power" or... they haven't made a loophole for that condition yet.

April 6, 2008 | Garten wrote:

No. I should be clearer but what I meant was maybe Suzaku got some kind of geass power from V.V and he used that to wipe out Lelouch's mind. The other alternative was Lelouch suffered from temporary amnesia due to him being shot in the head by Suzaku. The thing is, I'm not sure which one makes more sense.

I should really not post while I was half-asleep because I just mess up all the things I want to say. Yes, basically that's what I meant by 'real name'. C.C is an abbreviation of Shi Tsu. Anyway, I'll tidy up everything else soon.

You make a good point about Suzaku losing sight of his goal. A lot of fans already seem to find him hypocritical so the season is not starting off strong for him ... Also, Villetta working as backup for Rollo is the best theory I've heard yet.

I have no idea what side he will ultimately end up on (if he ends up on someone's side) but I did find it interesting that the ED sequence shows the Britannians with white wings and the Black knights with black wings but Rollo is the only character with both.

Maybe it's hinting that he switches sides? Or maybe he's torn between both?

Great episode ...except one thing...ok two.

It has been a year since the Black Rebellion was surprised and Todoh is still fucking alive? I mean in Season 1 they were going to execute almost immediately following his capture.

The other thing is that we have a pinked hair loli piloting the machine of death.../rolls eyes typical anime thing I guess. The cute little girl is the one who spells doom.

As for theories on what happened in episode 25...I am guessing that either Schniezel (sp?) or the Emperor himself showed up with reniforcments on Kameniji, captured Kallen, and then proceeded to wipe out Zero's memory. I seriously doubt Suzaku actually shot Lelouch anywhere vital otherwise we would have Suzaku stew with the spell of Sakuradite. Anywho..they then placed Rollo as someone to keep an eye on him...I am guessing he had something to do with those guys in blue who were hunting C.C.

As far as C.C. being hunted, This confirms my theory that I had a while ago. C.C. is an enemy of the Royal Family itself..she may have been cooperating with Marianne to kill the Emperor and hence Marianne was killed. So the Emperor then ordered the execution of C.C. and then used Lelouch as bait.

I think it's because making an enemy out of your friend hurts more than making an enemy out of a stranger one doesn't give two hoots about. The sense of betrayal, anger, and misplaced loyalty will come into play.

Btw Garten what was your impressions on the new soundtrack?

Unfortunately I didn't pay much attention to the soundtrack apart from the OP/ED ^_^;; I think I am getting used to the ED but the OP requires me to see the visual to make it interesting. As for soundtrack in general, I think they get overpowered easily by those action scenes

Touche Salesman, touche. I guess I am just picky because I simply don't like ore Suzaku. The one thing I liked about him was because he was more affable, kind, and like-able pre-Euphie death. Now all thats left is to hate him I guess...maybe that's what the writers were going for?

April 7, 2008 | Garten wrote:

Heh, I wasn't defending him. I actually don't like Suzaku at all. I've disliked him right from the beginning. In fact, there's no character in the show I feel attached to (maybe C.C). However, I think he's a necessary character for the show. I just want to see how much further he can fall. It's kind of weird since it seems the writers are going to give him some likeable Britannia friends.

"As far as C.C. being hunted, This confirms my theory that I had a while ago. C.C. is an enemy of the Royal Family itself..she may have been cooperating with Marianne to kill the Emperor and hence Marianne was killed. So the Emperor then ordered the execution of C.C. and then used Lelouch as bait."

Wikipedia mentions that the emperor himself has a geass also, on his right eye instead of left like lelouch. I think marianne is still alive and that she may be one of CC's race.

the entire remanents of the black knights now know about lelouch being zero, though it seems the fact that he is the emperor's son is still a secret. And really amazed at how worse suzaku has become, his aim is to become 1 in the round table knights and ask for area 11 as his province when he reaches that rank (since number 1 in the round table can ask to govern any area he wishes.)

I have a feeling that Rollo may be a substitute for Nunnally in Lulu's memory. Garrh.

I think I read somewhere that the official spelling from Sunrise is 'Gino", confirmed by a booklet/pamphlet/something given during the premiere, and "Zino" is just Newtype's mistake.
