The main plot in this episode feels a bit unnecessary, especially since the subplots scattered all over this episode (Millay's engagement, Villetta's status) are far more interesting. I think the only reason the writers decide to have this is because they want to incorporate that revelation towards the end of this episode. However, I think we've always suspect this revelation to be true so I think the writers could have written it in a different manner. I just hope that this will allow some kind of character development for Suzaku, who so far hasn't had interesting personality and story. Although it's unlikely, it would have been interesting if Suzaku ends up being the main villain of the series. At least that would give him a much more interesting role than a simple Britannian's loyal servant who romances the 3rd Princess.

The episode begins with Diethard reporting to Zero that Guren Nishiki's practice after its readjustment is going according to plan. The next thing to do is to wait for the development team and Laksharta. Their organisation is now 92% functional with team members spread across 14 classes. As instructed by Zero, several team members have been dispatched to a warehouses owned by Britannians. These military and staff personnels are distributed to no less than 564 places within the Kantou region. So far they've managed to discover 32 bases and uncover 11 dummy bases. Although Britannian managed to capture 47 people, they've severed information pertaining to level 8 and higher level personnels. And ever since they got the backing of Kyouto, there hasn't been a case where general public informs the army or the police. The phone call between Diethard and Zero ends with Diethard informing Zero that they're still looking for Toudou.

Cut to a scene showing Lelouch at an airport. He briefly talks with C.C, who's about to depart to the Chinese Federation. After C.C left, Lelouch remembers that when he was a kid, he once walked with Suzaku while carrying Nanaly. Back then Nanaly wondered if they have been shipped out to another house so Lelouch assured her that they're just going to another Kururugi's house. And then after that, they'd go to the master house. As they walk through the area, they spot many dead bodies so Lelouch told Suzaku to continue walking. Nanaly who smelled the rotting corpses wonder about the smell. Lelouch who didn't want ot scare her sister lied to her, claiming that they're close to a garbage disposal area. Suzaku, however, stopped walking and started crying upon seeing the body so Lelouch had to go back and fetch him. Once they get there, Nanaly soothed Suzaku's tears by saying that her mom once told her that crying is good for a person's temperature.

The next day, Suzaku meets Lelouch outside the class, realising that they haven't meet each other for a while. He warns Lelouch that continual absence will cause him to repeat a year. When Lelouch reminds Suzaku that he hasn't been around that much either, Suzaku claims that he's been doing his job since the Black Knights have been active lately. Lelouch is puzzled upon hearing this since Suzaku is supposed to be working in Engineering section. Suzaku nervously claims that they're short of hands and therefore he has to be everywhere. Lelouch understands this but he thinks Suzaku should occasionally stop by his house and have meal with them since Nanaly is often lonely. Suzaku agrees to come at night but before the two can continue their talk, they are interrupted by Rivalz, who have arrived with his motorbike. He immediately screams around in panic asking Lelouch if he's aware that Millay is having a marriage talk with someone.

Code Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshot
Code Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshot

This reminds Lelouch that Millay's marriage talk is today. Rivalz is horrified to hear this and wonders why Lelouch didn't tell him. Lelouch claims that Rivalz would just cry if he finds out about it. Lelouch then leaves the place to tell Nanaly that Suzaku would come over for dinner. Nanaly is busy making Origami when she hears someone entering the room. The person, however, starts to clap like a nutcase and is revealed to be none other than Mao. At the same time, Millay is having her marriage talk with Lloyd, who wonders if Millay is shocked since marriage talk is normally at a hotel. Millay claims that she's not surprised since she's heard that Lloyd is one of the 'unique' ones. Lloyd thinks they should not waste time and just get married already. However, since Millay and Cecile are shocked, he decides to put the idea on hold for now. Meanwhile, Lelouch is back inside his house only to find a picture of a bound and gagged Nanaly on top of a desk.

All of a sudden, Lelouch's cellphone rings and he finds out that the voice on the other side belongs to Nanaly. She claims to have no idea where she is but before she can talk anymore Mao has taken over the phone, informing Lelouch that it's him. Mao calls Lelouch careless and wonders if Lelouch thought that he was dead. Lelouch tries to inform Mao that C.C is not here right now but Mao tells him this is the reason why he came now. He thinks it would be problematic having an enemy who is not affected by his Geass. Because of this he decides to postpone his business with C.C. Plus, he hasn't had the chance to 'express his gratitude' to Lelouch for what happened the other day. Lelouch predicts that Mao is located within 500 metres of distance so he decides to set off to find the lunatic. While looking around the school, Mao tells Lelouch that he gets 5 hours and this is a game between the two of them so he doesn't want Lelouch to involve the police.

Mao informs Lelouch that he was unhappy for being shot the last time around. Thankfully for him, Britannian's medicines are powerful. He then claims that because Lelouch's carelessness during the final stage, Nanaly is now in trouble. Before Lelouch can say anything else, Mao already hangs up the phone. After hearing the looney's conversation with her brother, Nanaly tells Nao that although he's vicious at his game, if he makes her brother sad, she won't forgive him. Mao simply scoffs at the threat. Inside the student council, Suzaku finds out from Rivalz that Shirley and Lelouch are having a fight. Rivalz, however, is far more bothered with Millay's marriage talk. As for Lelouch, Rivalz thinks that although the guy is a great thinker, he lacks experience. Their conversation ends when Lelouch barge into the room looking panic. Rivalz suggests to Lelouch that he buys flowers for Shirley but Lelouch pays no attention to him.

Suzaku notices that Lelouch looks panic and therefore he decides to follow his friend out of the room. When he goes to confront Lelouch about it, Lelouch accidentally drops Nanaly's photo, confirming Suzaku's suspicion that something happened to Nanaly. Meanwhile, Ougi returns home and finds Villetta cooking. Upon hearing this he wonderse if that means Villetta left the house to do the shopping but as it turns out she's just using ingredients she finds in the house. Ougi wonders if Villetta remembers anything but it seems Villetta doesn't remember anything. Upon checking the surveillance recording on his laptop, Ougi believes that Villetta has indeed never left the place. Back to Lelouch, he remembers hearing the sound of flowing water during his conversation with Mao. Upon hearing this, Suzaku thinks that this could be the underground water system. Because of this, the two head towards the lift that can take them to the underground.

Code Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshot
Code Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshot

Once they get underground, Suzaku uses a mirror to survey the nearby area. He immediately spots a gun attached to the surveillance camera. Lelouch was thinking of turning off the system but before he can do this, Suzaku already leaps out and destroys the camera. The two then arrive at a place where Nanaly is being detained. Before they get to her, however, Suzaku warns Lelouch that there is a pendulum bomb set up on top of Nanaly's head. Despite this Suzaku assures Nanaly that if he and Lelouch work together there's nothing that they can't achieve together. At the same time, Lelouch performs analysis of the pendulum bomb, which apparently will set off if there are additional pressures added to it. After Suzaku informs him that the radius of the blast will be around 500 metres, Lelouch realises that it means Mao is outside his Geass reading range. Lelouch points out that the bomb can only be stopped by cutting the cable that leads to the detonator.

Although this is not a job that a man can do, Suzaku immediately volunteers to do the job. He reminds Lelouch that intelligence is Lelouch's field while he's just a soldier. At the same time, Cornelia nd Euphemia are seen relaxing inside a garden. Euphemia mentions how the garden resembles the one inside Marianne's villa. When Euphemia mentions that Clovis has painting of Lelouch and his family, Cornelia tells Euphie that she intends on conquering this area and capturing Zero. She feels that this area has claimed the life of her three siblings. Back to Lelouch, finds Mao waiting inside a chappel with a chess set and a weight balance. Each piece that Mao wins will tip the balance and brings Nanaly closer to danger. However, due to Mao's ability to mind-read, Lelouch easily loses to the guy. He tries to beg Mao for Nanaly's life but Mao simply tosses another chess piece to detonate the bomb. Much to Mao's surprise, however, Nanaly is still in one piece.

Code Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshot
Code Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshotCode Geass screenshot

All of a sudden Suzaku breaks through the window and hits Mao's face. As it turns out, Suzaku manages to cut the cable by matching his leaping skill with that of the pendulum. It was Lelouch who told him which line to cut and that Suzaku must do it when Lelouch screams. Lelouch doesn't remember this at first but then he realises that he has geassed himself to forget about it so Mao won't be able to read his plan. Mao becomes angry and in his attempt to set himself free, he makes fun of Suzaku for killing his father. Apparently 7 years ago Suzaku killed his father to stop the guy from going to war. Suzaku honestly thought that by doing this, the war will be over. What a messed-up kid he was. Mao is satisfied to be able to emotionally torture Suzaku but he's caught off-guard by Lelouch, who manages to geass Mao.....to shut up. Lelouch tries to punch the guy but Mao already runs out. He encounters C.C outside, who proceeds to shoot his brains out.

Impression:

During C.C's mind probe a few episodes ago, many people suspected that Suzaku caused the death of his father somehow. This week's episode reveals that no only this is true, he actually did it intentionally. I think his action shows that Suzaku is a bit too naive for his own good. Admittedly back then he was just a child who had no concept of right or wrong. He just wanted the war to end and thought that killing his father would have ended the war. The problem is that he tends to be quite extreme in his approach and he still adopts similar approach now that he's an adult. Moving on to other characters, Lelouch proves himself to be an excellent tactician this week when he geassed himself to forget about a certain detail in his plan. The only problem I have with this is how similar the story is to this week's Death Note, where Light asks Ryuk to take away his Death Note, thereby making himself believe that he's an innocent.

Millay's potential husband was quite a shocker. I wonder what this engagement means since Lloyd doesn't seem to be that interested in Millay and vice versa. Would this be one of those arranged married where friends agree to marry each other since it'd be a lot easier for them to do this than to marry someone that they don't know well. Technically Millay and Lloyd are not even friends but judging from Lloyd's reaction, maybe Millay can just marry him for documentation purposes. Ougi/Villetta are also equally interesting. Ougi is still suspicious of her but I wonder how long will it take before he ends up falling for her. And what would happen once Villetta regains her memory? Would she be horrified to know that she was in love with an Eleven? Speaking of Britannians, I was surprised to see Cornelia talking about Lelouch and Nanaly fondly. Was that just an act or a real concern? I can wait to see her once she finds out that Zero is Lelouch.

I'm a little confusedas to why people can make generic comments like "Oh, its Sunrise so they'll have crappy characters and stupid storylines".

It just seems like people prejudge anime shows just because of the production company. Like, just because Sunrise is doing the series people make assumptions and then it distorts their perceptions. the old saying, you only hear what you want to hear, and you only see what you want to see.

February 2, 2007 | Anonymous wrote:

Sunrise has good quality animation and is very capable with consistency; it's not the studio, really, that people are bashing, but the people who man the projects the studio animates. Keep in mind most of Sunrise's employees are Koreans; heck, just read the credits. While not exactly correct to call Sunrise responsible for the poor quality of some works, it helps people form opinions because Sunrise is a brand-label instead of, say, a meaningless name.

Sunrise's bad reputation is entirely because of Mitsuo Fukuda, the director of Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny. If not for him, the studio wouldn't be considered second rate next to Kyoto Animation.

She did promise to Mao "I will always be by your side", didn't she? What's more... his mental illness is also caused by her.

Btw, what does "Britannian's medicines are powerful" suppose to mean?? It can even bring a dead guy to life??? What a bad excuse, Sunrise.

I think this is another episode wasted to eliminate Mao from the picture. Actually I like the plot where there's another Geass user to compete with Lelouch. But I had thought it to be more exciting, like an equal match between the two smart asses. It turned out that Mao is not even in the same league as Lelouch, just a simple minded nutcase.

Japan doesn't have as many reservations against cliches and recycled plot stories like America does; people tune out of certain shows when they grow older, so make a new Gundam for each generation isn't a problem. Heck, if it was, we wouldn't be seeing so many Super Sentai shows.

But GS and GSD have failed in America as the lowest selling Gundam property in Bandai USA's history, such that they literally can't recover the costs of licensing, dubbing, distributing and promoting the series. Sure, it sells better than most anime from ADV or FUNimation, but for a Gundam series it's a lead balloon.

Heck, Bandai is so desperate to promote GS and GSD they even advertised it on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya english website. lol, nice try Bandai, but you sodomized yourself this time.

As for this episode, I have a feeling the whole Mao plot is really used to develop the characters of C.C. & Suzaku. It's also used to show that if Geass is not controlled properly, years after, Lelouche will also turn into a madman in the future. The Mao plot is not too interesting but using Mao, it saves a lot of time because otherwise, the creators will have to spend episodes just to unveil Suzaku's past. I prefer a more dramatic way of unravelling Suzaku's past though...

I think it's "The World of Death" ("Suki datta yo, Mao. Mao, saki ni itte motte iru. Shi no sekai de.") mostly because I don't wish to see Mao again. But yeah, that "Shi" does sound like "C". If such world ("The World of C") exists though, I hope it's not full of crazies like Mao. :D

You got a good point and unfortunately no matter how I think about it, this comes out like one of those plotholes. But few possibilities:

1. Maybe he was still nearby at that point.
2. Maybe he has a device which lets him know when someone comes into the room. And his "that's right, Lulu" is just a throwaway comment.
3. Maybe Lelouch keeps his headphone/head speaker "ON" up to that point so Mao can listen in on what he's been saying.

It wasn't the worst property, that was MSG. But the thruth is that every Gundam except Wing failed in America. But while that might matter to Bandai (mostly, the US branch) it's not that relevant to Sunrise at all.

And GS and GSD were incredibly popular and huge financial successes in Japan. They pulled in massive amounts of money and revitalized what was honestly a dying franchise.

Honestly, neither Sunrise nor Bandai has anything to complain about Gundam Seed, and you'll certainly never see them doing so.

Garten, come to think of it, I would mix your 2,3 together which probably is that Mao placed a camera in the room (which he did) and so he heard Lulu's comment from the video mode of his mobile phone. Then he called and said that.

I think we're starting to see a point where Suzaku's imaturity really began. He sees things in such a black and white format. That in my mind is truely immature.
LuLu is learning that and is growing as a character as a result. I dont expect Suzaku to grow any farther in that respect unless the creators plan for some sort of redemtion in the end.

I was wondering what Lelouch was Geassing Mao for... this is the funniest part of the episode.

This episode helps to illustrate a limitation in Geass as well as Suzaku's character.

Though Lulu geassed Mao, Mao managed to make a run for it before Lulu had a chance to pump him for more information. Previous geass victims wouldn't even move unless so directed. Since the only other example of resistance to geass is C.C., it's probably safe to conclude it's the geass that lowers the effectiveness.

As for Suzaku, has anyone seen the picture book drama? Between that and this episode, the viewer ought to have a better understanding of Suzaku's actions and thinking.

For those who haven't seen it, Suzaku used to hate Lulu and Nunnally simply because they were Brittanian. He even beat up Lulu. When he realized that he was the bad one in that scenario, he ran off in shame. Since then, I imagine that Suzaku's made particular effort to not judge people based on race or nationality. I would guess that Brittanian deaths bother Suzaku as much as Japanese deaths, because without definite proof otherwise, it's only normal people being killed, neither truly good or bad.

As for Suzaku's actions in recent times as well as back then, he and Lulu walked through ruins with corpses all over. He saw first-hand what happens when war breaks out., and most likely never wanted any more to happen, at any cost.

Since his father was apparently prepared to keep the war going even when all was hopeless, Suzaku probably realized that his father was prepared to keep the war going even if every person died. Imagine if the Japanese emperor and his councilors wanted to keep fighting WWII, even after Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

On the plus side for all the people who hate Suzaku, it's not an unreasonable guess to say that he'll never join the Black Knights until the Black Knights become a force that rivals the Brittanian army in power. So long as they have to rely on guerilla tactics and are considerably smaller, crushing them will be both the quickest and the least casualty filled method. And as Mao said, if he can die in the process of preserving as many lives possible, then he'll feel he's paid his penance for killing his father.

Suzaku doesn't see things in black in white. He does what he thinks is right, but he also understand there are consequences. He doesn't expect to be thanked for what he does, and he knows that there will be Japanese people who hate him for becoming a 2nd class citizen and joining the army.

I'm kind of curious on how Suzaku managed to kill his father at that age, was it just "SHOCK --STAB" as the flashbacks look to me, or what? His father looked pretty hefty and therefore I'd doubt killing him would be so easy. (But, then I don't think the inplied manner is unheard of.) D:

And that tan/blonde chick scares me already. Is that awhip in her hand?
