Clannad ep.22

I hate to say this but I'm afraid I find this series to be rather disappointing. When I heard all the hype about Kanon, I was afraid that the actual series wouldn't live up to the expectation but that wasn't the case. Kanon really deserved its reputation. That series managed to move me with some of its storylines. Even smaller things like two characters talking about one character's painful past over Kanon D-dur still sticks on my mind. In comparison, nothing in this series has the same effect. In general, I understand that the writers want to focus on the theme of family and happiness. However, everything seems so vanilla and the characters don't really change much over the course of the series. It's a nice-looking series and it has some good comedic moments but there's nothing in the series that really makes me want to see it again.

In the aftermath of seeing her father's old pictures, Nagisa continues to beat herself up, thinking that her parents sacrificed their own dreams for her sake. She even thinks that Tomoya is selfish as well for using everyone's time to achieve what he wants. In his defence, Tomoya claims that they're doing what they want to do. Because everyone has been doing their best, they also have to do the same. Later on at school, Nagisa continues to space out despite Tomoya's attempt to cheer her up. To make things worse, they got separated. While looking for her, Tomoya meets Sanae and finds out that Akio hasn't arrived to the school yet. Nagisa herself wanders into the reference roo and ends up watching an old video containing her father's school performance. She becomes even more depressed when she finds out that back then her father loved being in a play and planned on being a professional actor. As a result, when the time comes for her to perform in front of the audiences, she falls apart and starts crying. Tomoya is about to pull the curtain down to help her when all of a sudden Akio appears.

He tells her that he and Sanae didn't give up on their dreams. It's just that their dreams become hers. If she falls apart here, that's where it'll all be for nothing. Nagisa finally gets this fact through her skull and start getting her act together. After a few sobs, she calms down and gets on with the program. She narrates the story of a girl who lives alone in a world. In the actual world, the girl is seen burying her failed project. Despite this the girl encourages the girl to make something new again and hope that one day they'll leave this place together. After the play, Nagisa tells Tomoya that she remembers the continuation of the story. The girl and the robot leave the place to a more bustling place and then they sing a song. Lame. Later on, Tomoya's father comes to congratulate Nagisa on her success. Despite not getting along with him, Tomoya manages to ask him not to drink too much. Nagisa and Tomoya then celebrate the success of the play with everyone. The next day, they also go out together so Tomoya uses the opportunity to tell Nagisa what he's always wanted to say: that he loves her.

Impression:

Nagisa really got on my nerves in this episode. I dislike the fact that she couldn't pull herself together and ended up making a spectacle of herself in front of the public. What Akio said to her sounds pretty obvious to me and it's a wonder why Nagisa can't realize this on her own. For parents like Akio and Sanae, the well-being of their child is clearly their own dream. Just because it's not professionally inclined, it doesn't make it less honorable. So the fact that Nagisa mops around all for nothing just makes her look childish. Especially when her friends have put so much effort to make this possible for her. The most disappointing of all, however, is the story about the girl and the robot in the other world. I really thought there'll be some kind of connection between that story and the real story but it turns out that the whole thing is just nothing but a light story which ends anti-climatically. Oh well, there's still one episode left so let's see if it can somehow brings some kind of interesting revelation. I don't think that will be the case, unfortunately.

Wait for an announcement for Season 2? I still have my hopes that After Story will get animated as this will make the message of family and happiness far more pronounced and appreciative. And I think this is where Tomoya and Nagisa gets a huge amount of development. I seriously doubt KyoAni would leave things unfinished especially for a Key series.

Yeah, I am disappointed as well but if what people say about S2 is right, maybe we'll get something beter than this ending.

God does nobody listen to what people say...

23 is a filler or sorts maybe sunohara's really story. 24 continues on with Nagisa's arc and then we have no doubt that there will be a second season. Reasons for being so:

* Nagisa's real story is not done
* The Illusionary World hasn't even finished being told
*Routes have been left out and not done (Yukine, Misae and so on) they could put this in the after story.
*Tomoya has no resolved anything with his father
* Everything the game is about is in the After Story which is not humanly possible to fit into episode 24

So his just marks the end of the school life. Please do not compare Kanon to Clannad when you really have nothing to base that opinion on.

In Nagisa's defense did you not read what I posted before? She is a weak person. She has a life threating disease. She has no friends to start with and no will to do much of anything. Think about it...because of her, she took away her parents dreams. It may be understandable to everyone, but that is what makes everyone different To her she feels like a burden to her family.
They never explained to her why they did not succeed in their dreams. If they had told her this before she would not have felt this way. They hid it from her all this time. They kept it a secret.

I do not see how hard it is to understand this? Not all people in this world are strong people, everyone is different.

Remember...it's just an anime! :P
And even if there is an after life, this is a pretty dissapointing ending . 24 episodes was more than enough to have something more worthy and they ruined it by adding too much Fuko and harem crap

It IS a dissapointing end if they dont animate the After Story. This is only midway into Nagisa's story, and there's still much more to go.
(It'll challenge Air and Kanons drama for sure)

They've given so many hints in the opening for it, I cant imagine them not having it. It is the best part of Clannad and the story's heart and soul. As said by Maeda, the most important times are when the characters grow up.

grooven, most people don't have the time to check the game or figure out that there's "After story" or what they call it. They see this adaptation and see it for what it's worth. And sorry to say but it doesn't worth that much. It's a pretty boring series so far and if Kyoto really that serious about it, they should have announced more than 24 episodes if they need more than 24 episodes. But no, all they announced was 24 episodes and left the rest to the ether.

How would the rest of us know if we haven't actually played the game and just based our knowledge on this adaptation? It's not our job as viewers to look around for information when it's not even given out by the producer of this story. And as someone said before, they didn't even tell us the real number of the episodes beyond 24.

>>>>>>24 episodes was more than enough to have something more worthy and they ruined it by adding too much Fuko and harem crap.

Precisely. I've lost interest halfway through the series because there are so much filler that no one except the most hardcore fans would give two hoots about.

If Key/KyoAni wants to appeal to the hardcore fans, then wouldn't it make sense for them to announce all the episodes? If they want to also attract the regular anime watcher, then maybe they should learn story editing because this thing is so bloated it's not even funny. I remember from reading other blogs that even fans of Clannad are disappointed by this adaptation.

Yeah, so I was disappointed too, although I did enjoy the episode. In as much as I completely understand that Nagisa is not strong of character and is easily made to feel insecure, the whole breaking down was foolish of her. I mean, she KNOWS her parents love her to death, so why not have thought about making them proud with her play instead of crying!??! What Akio said was just pump-and-plain common sense.

but you know what they say, "Common sense is not common"...

Too bad we couldn't even get a kiss out of this episode. and screw Fuko-chan for taking so much time off this series and shortening everything. As someone pointed out, the fact that the studio hasn't mentioned anything official about a second season ages ago makes me wonder, "Is there really more?" Maybe they underestimated the adaptation task ahead when they started the Fuko arc and then just had to push everything together to fit into the 24-episode bracket!

Let's just act like this is the end for Clannad... yes, so there r 2 more specials and all, but let's just act like this is the end, and weep over how poorly the studio planned this...

Too bad... I loved this show...
(but after watching the movie, I am more than content... the movie is a very good compliment to the whole series and, given that I have watched the movie, it doesn't bother me so much that the series is over... go watch it too!)

March 22, 2008 | Kethy wrote:

in defense to Clannad and its misuse of 24 episodes, I'm sure all of us have clung to shows that had too many filler epsisodes to even count. Clannad is not so bad just because of it. Look at all the people following shows that have 52 episodes!!! Worse, all the NARUTO, BLEACH and ONE PIECE fans?!?!?!! Nuts! Insane! Crazy!

So let's cut Clannad some slack. It was good and that's why most of use watched it till the end... Of course, there's always room for improvement... and once again, if you want to get a conclusive ending, just watch the movie. You'll sleep better after... lol

Yeah, those who havnt played the game have no way of knowing it.

Though, all I can say is that the other characters stories are not 'filler crap'.
They're extremely important to the story. Unlike Kanon where if you take them out, the main story will be fine. For the last part of the story, we need the other arcs.

(Something the movie did away with. Effectively skipping a big theme of Clannad)

To be frank, this whole episodes was disapointing.

I really dislike Nagisa, because she is just way too soft, and takes everything very close to heart. She knows that her parents love her, and she still finds a way too see that she's at fault. I don't even see why she's that way.

Honestly, her parents made the desicion to have her, so they obviously care about her.

Nagisa was just annoying to me throughout the whole episode. I found that she's a bit too soft to be a leading character...

This series really doesn't have that much of a conflict, and I expected the finale to be more than this.
Fuko disapeared without a trace, Tomoya's father-issue wasn't solved, and the only thing that resulted of 22 episodes was Tomoya and Nagisa getting together, which basically happened in episode one.

*sigh* A bit disapointing... but I can't wait for the after-show.

Sorry I don't live in japan, haven't started watching it(but i have an idea what it is, through your blogs) and I have no idea what's in the game.

I am very glad that i was not the only disappoined.. i realize in the firts four or five episodes that Clannad was a flat show, i dont think that Tomoya was a good character as Yuiichi was... and yes, it has a lovely animation, some funny moments, but thats all. For me, it was the worst anime made for Kyoani...i said it.

March 23, 2008 | grooven wrote:

24 episodes could not cover all of Clannad the game is one of the longest visual novels ever created.

22 is end of school life

23 is filler arc not sure what is in it

24 continues with the end of nagisa's regular arc (can't fit after story into one ep)

I'm just saying everyone is pointing fingers and should understand a few things first that is all. You can easily look around and see that there is an after story. Kyo-ani is probably making it a surprise like Kanon was.

In comparing kanon to Clannad elements in kanon are different as the theme. Clannad is family Kanon is miracles. Key's story telling advances in Clannad. I will say that much.

Now seeing from a clueless perspective I would be a bit disappointed with how they left it off..but.it isn't the end >.> So reserve real judgment for the end

March 23, 2008 | Tekkaman wrote:

And when would that be? Episode 24? 2-3 years later? I agree with the others that from what we've seen so far, the series is disappointing. And no, it's not that easy to look around to know that there's after story. And not everyone will be motivated to 'look around'. Some just want to watch a series and take it for what it is.

March 23, 2008 | solgae wrote:

If After Story doesn't gets animated, this may be indeed be disappointing for some, since Kyoani took their sweet time making Tomoya confess to Nagisa. They just throw the two moments where there was some romantic involvement between the two down the drain (not that that was supposed to be the series focus), which would have annoyed some people. Plus, the force from Kyou and Tomoyo probably overshadowed Nagisa as well for most people.

But what may be obvious to you, might not be so obvious to some people who has a less-fortunate family than the others. This whole family stuff can be pretty easy to be taken for granted, but in reality, there much more involved than what you might think. Just like the case for Tomoyo's family, not all parents are willing to care for their family, and just like Tomoya's family, not everyone in the family is willing to sit down and talk to each other to understand each other better. I'd say, the most basic thing is probably the easiest thing to be overlooked for some.

Bottomline is, we need a second session for this to tie up the loose ends. Otherwise, I'll be very disappointed.

Tekkaman, seeing things from grooven's point of view, I think he was simply making a statement in response to the earlier posters who were apparently "disappointed in the ending".

The fact remains that the show isn't over yet. No one's trying to change anyone else's opinion over a show on the whole, but utterances such as "the ending was terrible" prior to the actual airing are sure to evoke a few responses.

Whatever the conclusion may be, let's all hope Kyoto Animation wraps it up nicely. Like the other posters, I hope that plans for a second season are in the works.

It's interesting to note how much Nagisa's character has progressed since the first episode of the series. I went back and watched the first episode and in it she is so shy, so reserved, so soft-spoken and just so.... ANEMIC!! lol. Then to see her in this episode being all happy and confident with her "right back atcha' " line and such; she's still very quiet and shy as a whole but one can tell it's a very noticeable difference from the first episode.

I partially agree with you. Her spirit shouldn't pop up everywhere and annoy people. But Fuko can't just die like that. Afterall she plays quite an important role in the After Story.

Actually, I wasn't disappointed at all with CLANNAD, as I came into the show with absolutely no expectations, and with some knowledge that the series was only going to tackle the 'School Life' section of the visual novel. With the confirmation of After Story (from Omni's site -- http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2008/03/27/clannad-after-story-announcement-commercial/) it only piques my interest, as I want to see how KyoAni spins its eventual ending (something that the movie-watchers should be familiar with by now).

And Garten, the answers to the Illusionary World actually come in After Story, or sort of...

Since Ushio (Tomoya's daughter) is technically the girl in the World of Illusion, trying to collect enough manifestations of happiness to change her -- and her family's -- fate.
