In comparison to last week's episode this one feels kind of weird and uneventful. If one has to sum up the plot, Tomoya is basically trapped in a relationship with Nagisa without even realizing it. I find it amusing since Nagisa already starts acting like she's his girlfriend, asking him not to go back home late, scolding him, etc. Oh well, I hope the writers can make this interesting since it's obvious that we're stuck with this pairing for the rest of the series. I am also interested to know more about that little robot creature and its role in the real world/series. It's kind of annoying that although we've seen this character a few times, there doesn't seem to be any hint on how it might be related to the main plot of the series. One of the fun things about Kanon is the correlation between the real series and that dream about a girl in the forest. And it didn't take long to figure out that she was the girl who was involved in the accident.
In the aftermath of the tennis game, Tomoyo is selected as the president of student council. Her first ruling is to allow the choir club and the theater club to share a teacher. Because of this Nagisa and the others celebrate their success. Later on, Tomoya tries to run away when he finds out that a teacher wants to talk to his father. Unfortunately for him, Nagisa finds out about this and ends up dragging him back to the teacher. When the teacher finally meet Tomoya's father, he's surprised to know that Tomoya's father leave every decision in Tomoya's hand. Tomoya later on tells Nagisa that ever since their fight, they haven't been acting like a family. Upon finding out about this, Nagisa suggests that Tomoya stays at her house so he and his father can put some distance between themselves. She believes that this would allow both of them to remember their feelings for each other, making it easier the next time they meet each other. Tomoya agrees with the plan and immediately packs his clothes. Before he left, he can't help but wonder if there'd be a time when he'll come back to his house. After a brief but strained goodbye to his father, Tomoya leaves the house.
Although he feels awkward at first, Nagisa insists that Tomoya greets her parents the way she greets them. Later on that day, the theater club is being thought by Koumura-sensei on how to deliver a show using costume, music, and lighting. When the group asks Nagisa about the play that she wants to produce, however, she admits that she doesn't know what to call it. That afternoon, Tomoya is shocked when they find a bunch of rugrats in the living room of the Furukawa. As it turns out, Sanae's main job is actually to teach these kids. In fact, she used to teach at kindergarten although for some reason, she quit the job. That night, Nagisa tells Tomoya that although she gets along well with her parents, sometimes she feels that she's done something bad to them when she was a kid. Tomoya thinks Nagisa just imagining things but Nagisa doesn't think that's the case. That night, Tomoya goes to visit Sunohara so he can escape the domestic feel of Nagisa's house. In the process, he is being questioned by Sunohara about his relationship with Nagisa. The episode ends with the little robot from the other world trying to build something using spare parts.
Impression:
Did Tomoya's father really treat his son badly? I'm wondering because at the moment, Tomoya's reaction makes him rather unlikeable. So far his father has been nothing but civil to him while Tomoya has been nothing but cold and distant. If the writers want the viewers to sympathize with Tomoya then they need to start showing why he doesn't get along with his father. Nagisa's secret past sounds intriguing but it can't possibly that bad. She probably just did something that caused her mother to be fired from her work. As for Tomoya and Nagisa's relationship, it actually moves a lot faster than I expected. Like I said before, it's kind of amusing to see Nagisa trying to control Tomoya's reaction and activities. Give and take a few years time, Tomoya wouldn't be that different from Akio. As for the rest of the characters, it's kind of weird to see them fade into obscurity. On the plus side, this episode is completely devoid of 'you-know-who'.
That distance that his father makes and unfulfilled, hidden wish of having a good family is what makes a father-son relationship becoming more distant
Surely Tomoya has an expectation; of what his father should do as a responsible single parent. Knowing your father laments on the death of his wife, and being a drunk at the process surely agitate the son.
Tomoya, all in all, is playing the blame-game. Because that's all kids do anyway to their parents nowadays, unfortunately.
If I have to say, in the context of the current world. where harmony in families is like a pearl within muds, I guess when kids being hurt by their parents, they will react exactly like Tomoya. Not giving any space for excuses and their parents' history.
I'd say everything we know about Tomoya's father so far has already been filtered through Tomoya's own colored lenses, given that he's the only one who's told us anything about him.
@rev: Not all of us hurt kids are like Tomoya. Actually, my situation would have benefited from me being a bit more like him.
I really don't get why Key always make emo guys the main character. They always have a past, and have to have a 'jerk' side to boot >_>
And with so few episodes left, I'm really worried the Mystery Girl+robot part is gonna feel rushed =/ If only Kyoto didn't waste so much time on Fuko...(as much as I like her)
@ghir:

Please elaborate on how Tomoya, Yuuichi, and Yukito are emo.

It's impossible to touch on any of the Mystery World or end the show with any clarity at all with the amount of time left. Which is why so many speculate that we're in for another season of Clannad somewhere down the line.
@ ghir
Emo? Wha-? I can understand that they have a bit of a jerkish side to them, but emo. No D:
One of the reasons why Tomoya is always so angry at his father is because he'll always speak to him as a stranger, and not as a son. In the game, Tomoya said how after the whole incident, his father didnt see him as a son anymore and stopped reffering to him as one. (He had no problem waking up his dad in the first ep. for instance, but when he began speaking, he got mad) The -kun at the end of his name really gets him mad though.
Not really a spoiler since the anime didnt properly have his monolouges, I think : D
And I'm worried about the After Story...no way they can fit it in. It'd probably be able to fill another 13-24 episodes.
Ok, maybe 'emo' isn't the correct term. But they really all do seem to have a JERK side >__> If Key makes another visual novel, I hope they create a character nothing like their previous male leads..
Anyone watch the movie? Thinking of doing so, but curious if it feels completely different from the tv series..
Finally, episode 19! I loved it, and yes, I have to agree with Garten in terms of how funny and strange it is to see Nagisa act like Tomoya's girlfriend (and him not seeming to mind too too much... lol). She also has become a lot bolder! I mean, asking him to stay at her house, just like that??? I understand the reasons and all, but the "old" Nagisa NEVER would have done that! (I'm acting like I know her... ha ha ha ha)
To Ghir:
The lead guy is definitely not emo. Let's face it, if he didn't have a secret mysterious past and all, what else are we watching the series for? I mean, there needs to be twists and turns, even in a good harem show, right??!?! ha ha ha ha ha, And the lead guy being a jerk IS a stereotype, but it makes him have a lot more character (and human-like emotions) than the wishy-washy guys in other shows.
About Nagisa's past,
Anyway, we'll see in episode 20!
@Kethy: If it's your speculation, there is no need to be in a spoiler's tag. Anyways, get those theories rolling cause I enjoy reading them and laugh at just how wrong they are (evil grin).
@ghir: Your wish is already fulfilled. Key's latest work "Little Busters" male protagonist is nothing like the previous ones. But I found Tomoya, Yukito, and Yuuichi to be much more likeable than any male leads that I found in the other works, though "Little Busters" male protagonist wasn't that bad either.
Sunohara is a man with a thousand Lucky Star faces, especially in this episode.
Aw no one commented on Tomoyo and Kyou's wonderful combo attack on Sunohara? I thought that was most interesting in this episode.
"Aw no one commented on Tomoyo and Kyou's wonderful combo attack on Sunohara?"
Okay....how about: "Hell hath no fury like two women scorned"? :D
LOL go check out the lead they gave for Little Busters. He is quite not what we expected.
Anywho in the game he already confessed to Nagisa by now....There is a huge chance now of the second season. and don't worry your little head off about the Illusionary World...
