Clamp no Kiseki

I finally received my copy of CLAMP no Kiseki. Yeah, it's very late and all but the shipping fee is kind of expensive and I didn't want to bother my friend with too many shipping request. So in the end, I had to wait until there are a couple of them to send. Unfortunately, the magazine themselves are a bit of a letdown. I have a lot of CLAMP artworks and IIRC, the majority of the artworks featured in this magazine have been shown in those books. The rest of the content usually are filled with character information as well as interview with CLAMP about a particular series. And finally, there are some short original comics which I'm not too crazy about either.

So what's the point in buying this? Uh, not much I'm afraid. The chess pieces are well made and they certainly are good enough to be collected. I'm also quite lucky that my friend managed to get me the limited edition box and chess board (Thank You, Masashi-san!) which I've heard are not going to be included in the Tokyopop version. But if you're not into figure collecting, and you have already own the majority of CLAMP's artbooks, I supposed the magazine will be of less value to you. Anyway, I took some snapshot of the magazine, the chess pieces, and the box/chessboard in case you're interested. Just be aware that I used a crappy camera to take the pictures and I'm a lousy photographer to boot.

The box + the chessboard - front
The box + the chessboard - back
The box opened - front

The box opened - sideways

Chess pieces + box

Pimp-looking Sakurazuka Seishirou

Note: Please do not direct-link to the pictures or Kero will 'get it'. You don't want anything to happen to Kero, do you? :)

May I know which characters represent which piece? I know the Mokona's the white pawn and thhe black Mokona the black pawn. But how about the others? Who represents the bishop? The Rook? The Knight? The Queen? The King?

Kinomoto Sakura (Card Captor Sakura) - White Queen
Daidouji Tomoyo (Card Captor Sakura) - White Queen

This two boggles me. It's been a while since I play chess but I'm sure there can only be one Queen in one party.

The rest are:

Watanuki (xxxHolic) - Black Bishop
Sakurazuka Seishirou (X) - Black Bishop
Sumeragi Subaru (X) - White Bishop
Suzuhara Misaki (Angelic Layer) - White Rook

I haven't ask my friend to send the rest so at the moment that's all the pieces that I have. Plus all of the Mokonas, of course.

In the completed Clamp no Kiseki chess set, there are:

Three Kings: Kamui, Fuuma, and Syaoran (of Tsubasa)
Three Queens: Sakura and Tomoyo (of CCS), and Yuuko
Six Bishops: Watanuki, Seishirou and Subaru (of Tokyo Babylon), Kohaku (of Wish), Fai, and Miyuki-chan
Four Knights: Kurogane, Nokoru (of Detectives), Akira (of 20 Menshou), and Hikaru (MKR)
Four Rooks: Misaki, Ashura (of RG Veda), Chii, and Suu (of Clover)

The pawns are all black and white Mokona. Compared to a conventional chess set, Kiseki has one queen, one king, and two bishops too many. I suspect this was devised in order to showcase more of Clamp's characters.

you can see information about chess pieces (this piece come with that book and such) at http://www.clamp15th.com

-- since there's 12 volume of "Clamp no Kiseki" 12x3 = 36 (while chess use only 32), you can expected to see some duplicate position

ps. i've ordered CnK too. The book are too thin!! ... well ... but if you buy chess pieces and think of book as supplement, not sound too bad ;)

Hello Garten. I've been reading your blog with a lot of interest. I found that our tastes seem to be similar and that many of the animes that you liked, I also enjoyed a lot. Recently, I've become interested in manga. Are there any mangas that you would recommend?
I saw your Deathnote entry and I loved that manga. I also liked 20th Century Boys a lot. Thanks!

MasterSpy, glad you like the blog so far :)

As for Manga rec, unfortunately I haven't read too much of them lately. I still regularly follow Evangelion and Fruits Basket. If you haven't try it before, I'll also recommend Yakitate!! Japan.

If you like 20th Century Boys, then maybe you should also try Monster manga. Assuming, of course, you're not watching the anime like me. If you're watching the anime, then I'll recommend that you stay away from the manga until the anime is completed. People have told me that the two versions are very similar so reading the manga may make you lose interest in the anime.

So do you think the Clamp no Kiseki is worth the $30 dollars that Tokyopop is going to charge for it? The price seems kind of steep to me, but then again I am not sure how good this magazine is.

March 18, 2005 | Garten wrote:

I actually bought Clamp no Kiseki purely because of the chess pieces. I personally think that the magazines are not that interesting. But to someone who wants to know more about CLAMP, then the magazine is a good way to get a quick glance of their series and what they think about it.

It's unfortunate that browsing at the bookstore is not a possibility. Unlike other magazine, Clamp no Kiseki is not packaged like a magazine. Each volume comes in a humongous box to house the magazine and the chess pieces. So browsing in a bookstore is probably out of the question. I'm not even sure if it's available at the bookstore.

The best advice I can get is if you have a friend who purchased the Tokyopop version, then you may want to take a look at it first before buying it. Alternatively, take a more risky approach and plunge your $30 towards the first volume and see if you like it or not. Also, maybe you should take a look at Tokyopop's site to see which volume corresponds with your favourite CLAMP series.

Hey Garten. Thanks for your rec. Sorry but I couldn't see your reply immediately. I am actually watching the anime Monster and it's already one of my favourites ever. I am tempted to read the Monster manga to find out who the killer girl is in the current arc is, but I think I'll be patient :)

0_0 You're kidding right? Those pictures are horrible even after some good hours tweaking them inside Photoshop. They have that horrid yellow tone.

Yes, I know Japanese although I only consider myself at a beginner level. :)

hmm. regarding the extra queen, i recall a rule i learned in chess class (yes, i took a chess class o_o). the rule stated that if a pawn of a certain color reached the end of the board of the other color (without being taken, of course), the pawn would be replaced by an extra queen piece. i kid you not; its a real chess rule o_o!

No no no!! I really loved them O.O

So, do you know japanese? Did you read the interviews or was it too difficult to read? I know they don't have furigana -__-

March 23, 2005 | Garten wrote:

I can make out a sentence or two but in order to fully comprehend it, I will have to sit down with a thick dictionary and a notepad. And I haven't done that yet. No Furigana means nightmare for me too. It doesn't help that I tend to memorise only the first spelling/permutation of each kanji that I know. >_<

March 23, 2005 | Chibi Yuuto wrote:

Ow, daijoubu! I know what you mean *sigh*

But, did you manage to get some good things from the interviews of volume 3 and up?

March 24, 2005 | Garten wrote:

Hmm, some good things? In volume 3, there is one where Ookawa-san said how the easiest character to write is Seishirou. She also said that she was more worried about how to write Subaru because he's such a good boy. It seems to me she likes writing antagonist characters a bit more - which explains why the antagonists in her story are sometimes more memorable than the protagonists. Apart from that though, no, not really. And I hate MKR and only lukewarm on Angelic Layer so I didn't even bother trying to read vol.4. I haven't got the rest of the volumes yet.

March 24, 2005 | Chibi Yuuto wrote:

Oww ! Thank you so much for that information ^__^ Seishirou been easy to write? That's interesting ^^

I can't tell you how happy I am to see pictures of these things, and the Tsubasa hardcover extras! CLAMP no Kiseki is one of those things I was really looking forward to, but now I'm debating how much I truly love it. I know I'll keep buying it though, since I'm an addict for everything CLAMP and the chess peices are adorable.

One question, on the CLAMP 15 site you linked, they have a picture (http://www.clamp15th.com/book/img/popup_sp.jpg) of Kero and Suppi figures. But I can't read anything about them and nobody has mentioned them before. What are they?

June 5, 2005 | TjT wrote:

The Kero-chan and Suppi-chan figures are bonus pieces. From what I've seen online, each JP issue of CnK contains a coupon; all 12 coupons are needed to send away [with some yen] for the duo.

Well, i only have a comment for the 3 queens. if a pawn reaches the other side, it can be a "queen" if you want it to be. So it can move like a queen ect.

i just bought clamp no kiseki #8, and seeing as the content of the book is actually pretty boring, i just want to collect the pieces. does anyone kno where i can buy just the chess pieces?

May 15, 2008 | lehst wrote:

sometimes I come across sellers on ebay selling just the chess pieces. they tend to sell the whole set though, so you could end up with duplicates...

and the same goes with kero and suppi pieces. they go for about $300 so i unfortunately haven't bought them yet...
