Autumn Anime 2006

September 15, 2006 | 53 Comments

Well, everyone else already done it, so I may as well do it now while it's still quite far from the due date. There are actually some series that started out starting from today but considering my backlong, I'd prefer to finish them off first. Having said that, I do need to trim my list down. With that in mind, unfortunately I have to stop blogging NANA and Coyote Ragtime Show. I was planning on catching up with them but it's just impossible now. I'm still undecided on School Rumble. I'll probably blog 14 and 15 because I like Yakumo but I'm not sure about the rest. As for other series, I'll try to finish them as soon as I can. Now, moving on to this list, this is just a rough list of things that I want to watch. If you have a series that you're interested in, please mention it in the commenet area. For more series, check out Moonphase

Pumpkin Scissors

Original Title: 「帝国陸軍情報部第3課パンプキン・シザーズ」 - Teikoku Rikugun Jouhoubu Dai-san ka: Pumpkin Scissors
Air Date: 2nd of October 2006 (Monday, 26:00)
Station: Teletama   Animation Studio: GONZO x AIC
Opening Theme: 「蒼き炎」 - Aoki Flame by Takahashi Youko
Casts: Itou Shizuka (2nd Lieutenant Alice), Miyake Kenta (Corporal Orlando), Toriumi Kousuke (Officer Oreludo)

Story: When Cadet Alice was at her military school graduation and when Orlando was standing in a burnt down city, there was a news of sudden cease-fire. 3 years later, the country suffers from starvation and epidemic. To make things worse, a lieutenant who calls himself "Wolf" leads a group of soldiers called "Gray Wolves" to a village, creating terror within it. Alice is now a 2nd Lieutenant assigned to Division 3 of the Imperial Army Intelligence Bureau called Pumpkin Scissors. While observing the situation in the village, Alice gets to meet the mysterious Orlando inside an eatery.
Interest: Medium. Pumpkin Scissors is a strange series. It's kind of bloody and gruesome to be called a comedy but the thing is, the majority of the story is not that serious. I'm mostly interested in the series because of the character design. But this is GONZO and they're not well known for good character design or consistent animation.

D.Gray-man

Original Title: 「ディー・グレイマン」- D.Gray-man
Air Date: 3rd of October 2006 (Tuesday, 18:00)
Station: TV Tokyo   Animation Studio: TMS Entertainment
Opening Theme: by Abingdon School Boys
Ending Theme: by Abingdon School Boys
Casts: Kobayashi Sanae (Allen Walker), Takiguchi Junpei (The Millenium Earl), Sakurai Takhiro (Kanda Yuu), Itou Shizuka (Rinali Li)

Story: An entity known as 'The Millenium Earl' is capable of creating 'Akumas', demonic weapons which contain human's soul and capable of evolving by killing other humans. The only people who stand against these creatures and the Millenium Earl are a group of Exorcists known as 'The Black Priest'. These are individuals who possess 'Innocence of God', a weapon which was used to defeat The Millenium Earl prior to an incident known in the old testament as 'Noah's Ark'.
Interest: Medium. People often compared this series to Bleach which is inevitable since they both are serialised in Shounen Jump. However, D.Gray-man is actually a lot darker in theme and can be rather gruesome at times. My first impression of the manga is that it's some kind of horror series laced with a few comic relief here and there.

Death Note

Original Title: 「デスノート」 - Death Note
Air Date: 3rd of October 2006 (Tuesday, 24:56)
Station: Nippon TV   Animation Studio: Madhouse
Opening Theme:the WORLD by Nightmare
Ending Theme: 「アルミナ」- Alumina by Nightmare
Casts: Miyano Mamoru (Yagami Light), Yamaguchi Kappei (L), Hirano Aya (Misa-Misa), Kudou Haruka (Yagami Saya)

Story: Yagami Light is a gifted but bored high school student who one day finds a 'Death Note', a book belonging to a Shinigami (God of Death) called Ryukku. Light believes that this book will enable him to create a world free of crime and criminals. A few months later, criminals fall to their death due to sudden heart attack. People believe that a God called 'Kira' is the one who killed these criminals. The police, however, feels that 'Kira' is exacting his own twisted version of justice. Because of this, they employ the help of a famous detective known as 'L' to find 'Kira' and stop his reign of terror.
Interest: High. Death Note is one unusual Shounen Jump series. Where other series in the publication rely heavily on fight scenes to maintain its audience's interest, Death Note relies mostly on the battle of wits between the characters.

Kanon

Air Date: 5th of October 2006 (Thursday, 25:00)
Station: BS-i   Animation Studio: Kyoto Animation
Opening Theme: Last Regrets by Ayana
Ending Theme: 「風の辿り着く場所」
Kaze no Tadori Tsuku Basho by Ayana
Casts: Horie Yui (Tsukimiya Ayu), Sugita Tomokazu (Aizawa Yuuichi), Satou Akemi (Misaka Shiori), Kawasumi Ayako (Misaka Kaori)

Story: A boy called Yuiichi returns to a town that he used to live in without any memory of his experience in this town. His encounter with five girls, however, slowly triggers his memory back.
Interest: High. I'm sorry for the lame story summary but I honestly don't know more than that and don't intend to know more until I watch the remake. I did get the impression from the Prelude DVD that the whole series is about Yuuichi recovering from his amnesia though. I am quite intriqued by this series since many people recommend this series but I am also cautious at the same time. Here's hoping I won't be disappointed by the hype.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Original Title: 「コードギアス 反逆のルルーシュ」
Air Date: 5th of October 2006 (Thursday, 25:25)
Station: MBS   Animation Studio: Sunrise
Opening Theme: by FLOW
Ending Theme: 「勇侠青春謳」- Yuukyou Seishunka by ALI PROJECT
Casts: Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch), Sakurai Takahiro (Kururugi Suzaku), Yukana (C.C), Koshimizu Ami (Karen Stadtfeld)

Story: After Japan was occupied by the powerful empire Britannia, it becomes a place simply known as 'Area 11'. In this area, Two boys called Lellouch and Suzuka grew up together. However, when Lelouch obtains the power of "Geass", he wants to destroy the world. On the other hand, by controlling a 'Nightmare Frame' called "Lancelot", Suzuka seeks ideal and truth in this world. The two boys' contrasting ideals will soon create a surge which shakes the empire.
Interest: Medium. I actually like the character design by CLAMP but the mecha design looks mediocre. It doesn't help that this is Sunrise mecha series, something that I don't really like that much.

Asatte no Houkou

Original Title: 「あさっての方向」- Asatte no Houkou
Air Date: 5th of October 2006 (Thursday, 25:55)
Station: TBS   Animation Studio: J.C Staff
Opening Theme: 「光の季節」- Hikari no Kisetsu by Suara
Ending Theme: Sweet Home Song by Yuumao
Casts: Fujimura Ayumi (Iokawa Karada), Itou Shizuka (Nogami Shouko), Satoshi Hino (Iokawa Hiro), Nomura Katsuhito (Amino Tetsuya),

Story: Ever since her parents died, the soon-will-be junior high school student Iokawa Karada lives with her elder brother, Hiro. Karada always feels bad about this, thinking that she's a burden to her brother. Because of this, she wants to grow up quickly. Nogami Shouko was Hiro's childhood sweetheart who still can't forget the days she spent with him when they were kids. When Karada uses a wish stone to grant her wish, her body turns into an adult while Shouko's body turns into a child.
Interest: Medium. Well, it sounds kind of interesting and could be the slice of life series I was looking for. Although on a hindsight the plot sounds like a rework of Midori's Days. I'm hoping it's more slight of life than pervy, wacky hi-jinks

Ayakashi Ayashi

Original Title: 「天保異聞妖奇士」- Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi
Air Date: 7th of October 2006 (Saturday, 18:00)
Station: TBS / MBS   Animation Studio: BONES
Opening Theme: 「流星ミラクル」- Nagareboshi Miracle by Ikimonogakari
Ending Theme: Winding Road by Porno Graffiti
Casts: Fujiwara Keiji (Ryuudou Yukiatsu), Kawashima Tokuyoshi (Ogasawara Houzaburo), Miki Shinichiro (Edou Genbatsu)

Story: The time was the 14th years of the Tenpou Era. Edo city was attacked by beasts from the underworld. The only people standing against these creatures are a group of people who possesses special power to fight them. These includes a wandering Samurai who has lost his memory and a girl who disguised herself as a man.
Interest: Medium/Low. It all depends on the animation. To be honest, I don't like the character design and the story sounds like X-Files in Edo period. But if the animation is interesting then I'll probably watch it.

Jigoku Shoujo: Futakomori
Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori image

Original Title: 「地獄少女二籠」- Jigoku Shoujo: Futakomori
Air Date: 7th of October 2006 (Saturday, 19:30)
Station: Animax   Animation Studio: Studio DEEN
Opening Theme:?
Ending Theme: 「藍染」- Aizome by Noto Mamiko
Casts: Noto Mamiko (Enma Ai), Matsukase Mazaya (Ichimoku Ren), Honda Takako (Honne-Onna), Sugou Takayuki (Wanyuudou)

Story: The continuation to Jigoku Shoujo, the second season presumably continues the story of Enma Ai as she drags those pitiful excuse for human beings to Hell where they will be impaled, tortured, and burned over and over again. :) Maybe if we're lucky we'll get to see Enma Ai trying to escape Grandma spider.
Interest: Low. After the first season, it's hard to be excited about this. I can imagine a dozen or so Ippen Shinde Miru before the series actually starts any kind of arc. That will be fine if the one-off story and animation are actually good but usually they are bordering between mediocre and poor.

Shounen Onmyouji
Shounen Onmyouji image

Original Title: 「少年陰陽師」- Shounen Onmyouji
Air Date: 7th of October 2006 (Saturday, 25:00)
Station: Kanagawa TV   Animation Studio: Studio DEEN
Opening Theme: 「笑顔の訳」- Egao no Wake
Ending Theme: 「約束」- Yakusoku
Casts: Kaida Yuki (Abeno Masahino), Noda Junko (Mokkun), Konishi Katsuyuki (Guren), Ishida Akira (Abeno Seimei)

Story: 13 year old Masahiro is the grandchild of famous Onmyouji master, Abeno Seimei. In his practice, the kind yet inexperienced Masahiro is accompanied by an evil spirit known as Mokkun.
Interest: Low. The artworks and character design looks quite good and I'm a sucker for Onmyouji type of story. However, Studio DEEN is the one who is going to animate this and I have no faith in them these days.

Hataraki Man
Hataraki Man image

Original Title: 「働きマン」- Hataraki Man
Air Date: 12h of October 2006 (Thursday, 24:45)
Station: Fuji TV   Animation Studio: GALLOP
Opening Theme: 「働く男」- Hataraku Otoko by PUFFY
Ending Theme: 「シャングリラ」- Shangri-La by Chatmonchy
Casts: Tanaka Rie (Matsukata Hiroko), Hanawa Eiji (Yamashiro Shinji), Tanaka Atsuko (Kaji Maiko), Ueda Yuuji (Kobayashi Akihisa)

Story: Matsukata Hiroko is a 28 year old woman working as a magazine editor. This series basically is a chronicle of her life as she tries to balance her professional life and her personal life.
Interest: High. One of the seemingly original series to come out this season. This could be something different for a change. A look at the office politic for a working girl. As a side note, Moyoco Anno is actually Hideaki Anno's wife.

Kekkaishi

Original Title: 「結界市」- Kekkaishi
Air Date: 16th of October 2006 (Monday, 19:00)
Station: Nippon TV   Animation Studio: Sunrise
Opening Theme:?
Ending Theme:?
Casts: Yoshino Hiroyuki (Sumimura Yoshimori), Saitou Rie (Yukimura Tokine), Muraji Manabu (Sumimura Shuuji)

Story: Sumimura Yoshimuri is the 22nd Kekkaishi within the Sumimura family. Despite this, he's not really interested in becoming one and is more interested in sweets and making a castle cake. His laidback attitude often clashes with Yukimura Tokine, a childhood friend of Sumimura who is also a Kekkaishi.
Interest: Medium. I've read the manga. It's a nice light story about a kekkai master. The animation could be potentially nice if Sunrise could pull it off. It could be their new Yakitate!! Japan only with creepy ghost instead of delicious breads.

Also interested in:

Red Garden (3th of October), Ghost Hunt (3th of October).

Well, it's good to know it looks like at least one blogger I trust may be covering Death Note. Surprisingly, I've yet to catch any of the manga, or the live-action movie, so I know little of the story beyond the synopsis above, but I've heard nothing but good things about it, and with the announced voice cast, it should be a good one, as long as the animation quality holds. Glad Gonzo or Sunrise didn't get this one.

Seems like a good season, especially with Death Note and the Kanon remake. I like Pumpkin Scissors's title. cant wait! only a few more weeks!

I have an unrelated question. A while back you uploaded the Dramatic piano version from a dvd rip of a H&C dvd. it was a yousendit link and died. could you reupload somewhere please? also, any news of a H&C II OST? I know they used a lot of the same songs, but there were a few new ones. thanks!

Jase Chun, I'll try to look for the file but it's been a while since I posted that song so I have to look in my CD collection. It's not a complete song you know. Unfortunately, I have no idea when H&CII CD will be released but I suspect that OST will contain those piano versions of both OP and ED.

Atashi, thank you for the information on Death Note OP and ED. It's appreciated.

I'm really excited about Death Note. I've been reading the manga for a year now and love the Yagami Light and L arcs. The Near and Mello arcs are decent. Almost finished with the entire manga and looking forward to comparing the two versions.

Also, Ghost Hunt looks pretty interesting. I feel pretty sure about watching this one. I was a fan of Jigoku Shoujo, but I'm a bit skeptical about the second season. I hope that it does interest me. Kekkaishi and Red Garden are worth checking out to me.

Thanks for your previews into the new season. I look forward to your upcoming blogs.

Negima Haru and Negima?! (!!) When they said that it'll be different from the manga (merely base'ing on it), I wonder if it meant:

Different from manga, and pick up where Season 1 left off, or different from BOTH manga AND anime.

Either way, the trailer for the ova looked REALLY good (kudos for Setsuna's nosebleed) , so I'm definitely looking forward to that.

Hmm..not many series interests me this season.Kanon is a must having Kyoto Animation and the Death Note manga is smashing,so thats a must watch for me too but aside from these two the other series don't interest me.
On a side note,I wonder why Death Note is being done by Madhouse and not Kyoto when Kyoto included a few characters from Death Note into one scene in FMP:TSR.Was that not a hint?
Ah well,I hope I have not over-hyped myself up too much for DN and Kanon.

It's probably the only reason since I've read the manga and I just can't see how they're gonna put all those witty thoughts and coversation into an anime...wouldn't that be a bit boring?? (But the if it's Miyano Mamoru...he can speak as much as he likes ^^

I'll be interested in D.Gray.Man, which was very good manga from what I read up to, Death Note was also very good and unique (although I stopped reading halfway through, which most people tell me is a good thing), Kanon remake should be nice, Kyoei animation will probably do a good job, and I loved the original Kanon and would've liked that one to use Last Regrets. Also, anyone paying attention to Busou Renkin (by same author of Rurouni Kenshin)? I read some of the manga, but the translation project moved slowly, but what I read of it was quite nice, I heard it was starting this season.

I'm interested in Code Geass and Hataraki Man teh most. I'm also intrigued by Ayakashi Ayashi because it really almost seems like someone swapped Geass and Ayakashi's timeslots... (to do what, I wish I knew)

But the more I think about it the more Ayakashi Ayashi seems like it could be *really* boring. I'll cling onto my "BONES is trying to downplay it so people will be imprsesed later" theory until I watch it.

Code Geass I have to watch because... because of Goro Taniguchi, dammit ;_; Even if it turns out awful, I'll promise to watch the first 5 episodes!!

But Hataraki Man might turn out to be the best really, because out of everything like you said it sounds the most original. I'm just worried about the animation studio being Studio Gallop. I'd love to see OP/EDs by Hideaki Anno like Sugar Sugar Rune, though :D

P.S. You might want to include that the OP for Code Geass is by FLOW, though the title is still unknown I think. (And why is 'su*ks' a "questionable content" in the comment screening? That's a bit...)

Summary for Red Garden:

Kate, Rachel, Rose, and Claire are four girls from good family who attend a school in New York. One morning, the four girls wake up with a sense of dread because they can't remember anything that happened the day before. In addition to this, a girl called Reese was found dead. Because of this, the four girls decide to meet inside a Garden to figure out the mystery.

Noitamina shows never fail to my expectation so I'll watch Hataraki Man :) . Moreover this show is about the publishing world so I'm very interested .

Death Note => just the title is enough for me to drool over. And for god's sake , if Tamaki voices Light , what could be more thrilling . I wonder how his voice can be as cool and cold as the character since I'm used to hear such a lovely Tamaki making a fuss over Haruhi :D /

Red Garden is done by Gonzo :( , so I'm a bit worried but I fell in love with char's design , very beautiful and artistic , the trailer looks nice too . And it's a western-style horror story so I wonder how they pull it out .

Code Geass!!!!! I can't miss any hint of what will come from Rozen Maiden 3th season, or anything related to this, so if Ali Project will be there, so am I.
Red Garden reminds me a little Monster, beginning with a tragical incident, and next act, episodes trying to reveal the mistery, perfect for spending hours of suspense and inbreeding into oneselves black humor.
Hataraki Man maybe is one of those original ideas than say nothing but real japanese lifestyle accompannied by delicious comedy to make expectator enjoy the existence of anime.
D Gray would be the last one in my list(not-really-in-descending-oreder), but I'll try to equilibrate this big amount of anime with school and life stuff.

Hmm... As for this season, most of it doesn't look too impressive, but I'll just have to wait and see. I've been really looking forward to the Kanon Remake for a while now, so watching that will without a doubt be my top priority. I"ve been thinking about picking up the Death Note manga for awhile now, so I'm sure I'll check that out too. After the first season of Jigoku Shoujo, I'm not completely sure about it, but I may decide to take a look at that too. Asatte no Houkou looks like it may be good, so I'll wait for some feedback on that once it's started, I'm hoping it will be a nice slice of life.

I guess I better get busy on catching up with my older anime before the new stuff starts, I have tons of unseen anime piled up at the moment and no time to watch it.

The only anime I'm really looking forward to is Death Note. I'll have to continue reading the manga soon, I guess. I'm so excited to hear my beloved Miyano Mamoru voice my favourite DN character! (Yes, I like Raito. (Even if he is a complete and utter psychopath.) Shut up. >>;)

I might watch Kanon and D.Gray-man, too. I've heard about the Kanon anime, and have wanted to watch it for a while now. I guess it's better to watch the original series first, before I watch the remake. I've heard a lot about the D.Gray-man manga, too. The popular anime series Jigoku Shoujo (sometimes referred to as "Hell Girl"), has spawned a live-action TV drama, which is set to begin airing in early November.

The main cast was also announced. Sayuri Iwata will star as Ai Enma, Kazuki Katou as Ren Ichimoku, Aya Sugimoto as Hone Onna, Hisahiro Ogura as Wanyuudou, Kazuhiko Nishimura as Hajime Shibata, and Saaya as Tsugumi Shibata."

Sayuri Iwata as Ai:
